Islamic history in Portugal
May 2018 • Couples
There are a few museums and archeological sites throughout the old village of Mertola. The islamic art museum, housed in a remodelled building, has wonderful artifacts that have been excavated from around the village and castle further up the hill. Two euros gets you in to see well preserved and reconstructed ceramics and metalworks from the early settlers in the region. Well laid out gallery with very helpful staff. Certainly worth a stop if your seeing the other sights in Mertola.

Well worth a visit
Jun 2017 • Couples
The Museum encompasses several displays over about a square km of the old town. It is not easy to actually figure out in advance where everything is - but there is a tourist office and they can help with a map.

The history of this area spans centuries and the museum includes Roman, Visigoth, Moorish and Christian periods. It is displayed very nicely and is well worth a visit.

The "Museum" is really a series of museums
Apr 2017 • Friends
The town calls itself the museum town... and that seems to fit. The Mértola museum is actually a series of about ten separate locations around town, so this rating is the overall effort of all of the locations combined.

Arte Islamico

A beautiful and well-presented museum of local Islamic art. Most originated from the 12th and 13th century. Lots had been dug out in the castle area. Items were surprisingly well preserved and/or restored.

A warm welcome and a very interesting hostory

We loved this small town and it's well organized historical circuit: a church formerly mosk, an open-air digging site where they uncovered remnants of Roman, Arab and Justinian ruins, a museum about tools and lifestyles in different eras and the castle.
They have a rich history and they cultivate it very well! All with nice documentation and very helpful hosts.
Loved it!

Circuit of museums spaces very well structured. Map with the identification of all spaces. In just 2 places, we paied the symbolic entrance of 2 € per person. Apparently, exist audioguide for the tour but they were not available.
