The beach is lovely as is the whole Norfolk coastline (and Suffolk too). As for retiring there - well that is a milllion dollar question. It depends a lot on what you like and where you are coming from. You can get some fantastic properties at a low price - a lot for your money but the area has a particular charm which not everybody feels. If you like walking and an outdoor life it is great, for seaside culture it is great, for heritage it is great, if you like fish and chips it is fantastic, but if you like shopping, hanging out in coffee shops, shishi restaurants and boutique hotels, then you have to go to somewhere like Norwich. There are a couple of theatres, there is a music scene, there is a lot of multi-cultural (Portuguese and Eastern European mostly) influence and food, a brilliant and rare Circus (the Hippodrome) and some growing festivals - Out There (circus and outdoor arts) and the Maritime Festival in Great Yarmouth and a couple in Gorleston. I would say that Gorleston and Great Yarmouth are interesting places to live but not if you like everything very polished and slick. Hope that helps ps Poppy would love it!
