A few meters to the east of the Gokokuji Somon Gate there is a large closed gate without any sign of what it is. My Japanese friend told me that it’s the entrance to the Toshimagaoka Imperial Cemeteries for imperial family members excluding emperors and...More

It’s a spacious and peaceful temple precinct, not too far from Ikebukuro. As I used to work near the temple many years ago, I was so glad to visit the temple during my stay in Tokyo.

The temple has many cherry trees mixed with the temple architecture and statues to create a very special appearance and atmosphere. I rarely take photos but took plenty here. Many trees were not in full bloom yet, on March 27. A 2.8 km walk from...More

I was just walking around the area when I noticed on my maps this huge temple right in the middle of a very urban zone. Of course, not being very knowledgeable in the temples of Japan (just the occasional Kinkakuji and Ginkakuji information in my...More

Large area to walk around. Good panoramic view of the huge temple including the temple stairs. Ghostly atmosphere welcomes you inside as it is quiet and placid. Only a number of visitors. Good place for people who don't want to see people.

One of my favourite temples in Tokyo. Tranquil and beautiful, from the buildings, to the artwork, to the gardens. Slightly off the beaten path, but a lovely place to visit. They sometimes have a flea market on a Saturday too.

The Shrine is very near to the Gokokuji sta, barely a station away from Higashi-Ikebukuro. We read that this Buddhist temple was established by the fifth shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi who dedicated it to his mother back in 1691. The premises are notable for surviving the...More

Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several
thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores

gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at
the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a
landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium,
planetarium, theme park as well as an observation
