This trip was fantastic! I went with friends and my husband and our 9 and 11 years old. Our friends have a 13 year old. Everyone loved it! The kayaking equipment was well kept, the guide knowledgeable and the experience unforgettable! We learned about mangroves and the fireflies and area. If you’ve ever been out catching fireflies this is nothing like that experience! This is thousands of fireflies making trees look like living bioluminescence! The experience is a once in a lifetime experience!

We were a group of 4 friends who went on the Firefly Kayaking tour and we had a great time. It was a clear night so the stars were incredible, the fireflies were stunning and overall it was a lovely evening. We also found the dinner to be really delicious! The only downside was the price. For the Philippines, £30 per head is rather steep for a kayaking trip. If some of the money is going to support the local community then that would be great, however that was not made clear at any point so you are left wondering why it is so expensive.

We took the Mangrove+Firefly tour, and a few days later we took the Sunset Sandbar tour. (We were the only ones on the sandbar!) Please support KayakAsia and their environmentally sound tourism. Yes, it’s more expensive than motor boat tours, but you will not be guilty of destroying the environment.

My partner and I did a lot of research before booking our trip with Kayakasia Philippines and I can honestly say that our experience well and truly exceeded all of our expectations. We wanted to Kayak down the Loboc River and see the fireflies under the Mangrove. Many companies offer this service via motor boat but having done plenty of reading on the subject, we quickly learnt that these types of expeditions are incredibly harmful to the river ecosystem and are actually destroying the Loboc at an alarming rate and killing wildlife (including the fireflies). We chose the Kayakasia Philippines tour because it is a small company dedicated to conservation and protecting the wildlife. They also use part of the proceeds to help fund schooling for their staff, most of whom come from very underprivileged backgrounds. Kayakasia very kindly picked us up from our hotel and drive us to their site; a beautiful place sitting next to the river. Right away they made us feel at home, offering us drinks, asking us questions about our stay and giving us an overview of the trip. It was genuinely like being in a family living room and they gave a much more personal touch than you would receive at most commercial tour companies. Next up was a quick Kayak lesson and life vest fitting before we were on our way. We mounted our tandem kayak (you can choose a solo kayak if you prefer) and took off down the Loboc. We were soon kayaking down the mangrove tunnels, as sprawling trees arched over us. Wildlife was everywhere and it was completely silent except for the sounds of birds and insects. Every once in a while, our tour guide Jeremy would stop to tell us about the river and the wildlife. He would also talk about the immense damage being caused by the motor boat expositions. He was incredibly knowledgeable and clearly very passionate and sincere. He explained that Kayakasia had given him his entire life, sending him to university and teaching him to redirect wildlife and the environment. He made the experience so fascinating and he was a constantly engaging presence and such a sweet guy who genuinely cared about giving us the best experience. After completing part one of the trip, we kayaked back to base where we were treated to a beautiful home cooked plate of traditional Bohol cuisine that was worthy of the admission fee alone! The atmosphere was lovely and the food even more so! Around 45 minutes later we were off again to find the fireflies! By this point the sun was about to set and as we took off, we were fortunate enough to cruise down the river to a truly stunning sunset. After the sun was fully set, the rest of the tour took place under the night sky, which was incredibly beautiful and so peaceful. We were asked to please remain as quiet as possible out of respect for the wildlife and to also make sure we didn’t scare the fireflies. As we kayaked down the river under the starry night sky, a few stray glowing fireflies hovered past us. And then, we arrived beneath a tree, fully immunised by the dancing bugs. We all watched in silence for a few minutes and it was almost a spiritual experience. In a low whisper, Jeremy educated us about the fireflies and answered questions. We saw four more groups of fireflies in different areas, learning new things at each area. Finally, with the tour over, we were treated to dinner with the hosts (somehow even tastier than the previous meal) and at around 10pm, our tour was finished and they kindly drove us home. It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had and the highlight of my time in the Philippines. A huge thank you to Jeremy and all of the people at Kayakasia Philippines!
