This local collective of authentic San Juan la Laguna Mayan artists are a welcome contrast between the more "touristy" styled art you will find on the main road leading to the docks as you access town by boat. Nearly all of the murals around town and those near the community cultural center/library were created by Jovenarte. This is a must-see engagement opportunity for anyone visiting this beautiful area that seeks a unique authentic experience with Mayan culture in San Juan.

I visited this small donation-based museum in June following the recommendation of a friend in nearby San Pedro. The art on display was a mixture of contemporary photography, paintings, sculpture and textile work by local artists. The level of talent of these local artists is top notch! I especially loved an exhibit featuring a photographer whose subject was "abuelos" (grandparents) of the community. His work honors the community's elders and shows a beautiful love and celebration of the Mayan culture and also for nature. If your trip to Lake Atitlan brings you to San Juan, I absolutely recommend a visit to this museum!

Above the local library on the second floor is a small museum filled with photos and artifacts. Adjacent to the museum is a small gallery operated by jovenarte, a collective of young Mayan artists from the local area who are trying to preserve the Mayan culture through fine art. The gallery recently opened, and hopefully they will continue to add artwork to the collection. These young artists produce some amazing fine art, and also painted the murals in the courtyard by the library, a must see for anyone visiting the area.
