The gem of Guatemala, Lake Atitlan is a crater lake surrounded by volcanoes and a living hub of Mayan cultures. Visiting on a day trip from Guatemala City simplifies transportation to this highland destination and lets you see the best of the lake in just a day—a difficult feat to accomplish on your own. This tour includes stops at top Lake Atitlan sites including the Maximon shrine and the busy town of Panajachel.

My friend and I had the pleasure of learning and connecting with these beautiful women over two days. Our first day was spent with Amalia, who taught us about the natural dying process taken to create the beautiful textiles you see all over Guatemala. We hand picked sacatina leaves and cinnamon leaves to create our dye baths, which yielded a beautiful blue and a deep red wine color. We mixed these with achote to create a beautiful mix of colors to dye our pants with. On the next day we returned to participate in the weaving workshop offered by Tintemaya. This was equally an incredible experience. I spent time learning how to weave a bag while my friend worked on a scarf. If you’re traveling around Lake Atitlan I highly recommend stopping by San Juan to participate in this beautiful experience offered by Tintemaya. I feel so lucky to have been able to learn from these women.

Amalia is an amazing and enthusiastic teacher. I highly recommend taking a natural dye class with her in San Juan La Laguna. You will learn how to select and process materials from nature to create different color dyes. She provides each student with a handwoven cotton scarf to dye during class, which is then yours to keep. I took the class with two friends, and we all very much enjoyed getting to know Amalia. Muchas gracias!

This weaving cooperative is in the heart of one of the most sustainable villages around lake Atitlan. We as a small group of friends loved the afternoon with Amalia, a wonderful indigenous woman, who shared her passion for natural products. We made mermaid colored scarfs - a wonderful experience to understand that nature offers us all we need. Thanks you Tinte Maya.

I contacted tintemaya earlier this year when I was staying at lake atitlan and wanted to learn how to weave in a conscious way. I was told to come to the shop (which is worth a look in itself!) the next day in San Juan la Laguna and a woman would be waiting for me to take me on an afternoon workshop of weaving. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but sure enough when I arrived there was a little lady there awaiting my arrival and we walked together to her house where she had set up looms in her backyard and where I also met her husband, son and another woman who also weaves as part of the collective. My Spanish is pretty poor and her English minimum but we managed the entire afternoon with hand signals, smiles and taking turns on the loom, and it felt very special, her giving me an insight into a typical afternoon in her village. Together we picked colours, set up the loom and wove a scarf, it took much longer than expected- I would recommend blocking out a whole day to do this rather than an afternoon like i did. By the time we were finished it was dark, and her husband offered me a ride back in his truck to San Pedro where I was staying, a good 15 min drive away which I am eternally grateful for! The weaving skills these women have are incredible and it makes you appreciate the long and tedious handiwork that goes into each item that you see sold all around the atitlan area. If you are thinking about buying some of the crafts, check to see if the woman who made it is part of the women’s collective. It means she decides on the price it’s sold for and she gets most, if not all of the profit made from the piece. If you want to learn a new skill and get an insight into the work that goes into each bag, scarf etc, sign up for a weaving course. It was incredibly good value for the afternoon, very intimate and fun. Thanks to the ladies at tintemaya!
