The Lake Grassmere Salt Lakes, while industrial, are a very fascinating place to stop when traveling along Route 1 from Picton to Kaikoura. You will have to be careful and watch for the sign--it comes and goes very quickly. We were there on a Sunday...More

We stopped here on our way south last weekend. Take the first signposted road direct to the salt works, if you want to do a tour of the works, just check before you make the trip south from Blenheim as it is about 30 minutes...More

Just an industrial zone, a lake clearly divided for production, no colour, don't waste your time and keep driving

If you like beach walking then keep going past Lake Grassmere to the end of the road. This a wild and secluded beach well worth the effort to visit.

Stopped by on our trip south to show grandaughter the salt piles and explain how salt is made. Could see enough from the road to make the stop worthwhile.

I had seen these Salt Lakes on Google Earth. When driving from South to North on the South Island the main highway passes right pass these lakes. You must stop and take some photos, they are incredible colours. Sadly we passed by on Good Friday,...More
