Carcar City is just an hour away from Cebu City. If you have the spare day, go and appreciate the architecture of this quaint city in Southern Philippines. A stand-out is the Carcar Dispensary, now preserved as the city's museum. There is nothing much in the museum per se, but the building itself, built during the early American Period in the 1920's, is worth seeing. It was restored beautifully! Manila should learn something here - you do not demolish old structures. You preserve them and make them functional again.

The construction of the Carcar Puericulture & Dispensary was started in 1929 during the American period and completed in 1937. The white painted building was an eye-catcher because the front facade's balcony archway was done with filigree woodwork along with semi-circular transoms, carved barandillas and mini canopies.

Inside the building, we found various displays of women's clothing worn during that era, medical tools and musical instruments! Also, there was a guide available but we chose not to utilize her services because of time constraints. At the end of our visitation, we decided to buy bags of bacarillos from her and we were glad we did :)

An excellent example of American-Era Civic Architecture in the Philippines, construction of this edifice was started by mayor mariano Mercado in 1929. The building was inaugurated in 1937 by his wife, Flora Base Mercado, with Gov Sotero Cabahug in attendance. The Carcar Dispensary was immediately hailed as a symbol of the towns progress. The building’s profusion of latticework, semicircular transoms, carved barandillas and mini-canopies amidst stained glass window panes make this structure truly an outstanding architectural landmark.

I'm pleased to report that the Carcar Museum has no entrance fees, but I greatly encourage donations for the maintenance of the place. :)

Also, kindly check out the map for a bird's eye view of what you can see in the place. As you can see, at the center is the Carcar Town Plaza surrounded by the Upland Elem School, Carcar Fire Station, St Catherine College, St Catherine of Alexandria Church, and of course, the Carcar Dispensary Museum! Carcar is a small town in route to other destination in southern Cebu. Its a nice stop to break the monotony of long travel or bus ride.

I went to the museum sometime in May 2014. Unfortunately, it was close that time. Another attempt the following year proved successful, and very rewarding.

I got to read the history of the place posted on the walls, touched mini busts of old personalities of the city and that of young St. Benedict and experienced the grandeur of the structure.

Free entrance, no limitations on taking of pictures and freedom to stay for as long as you please. It is located in Carcar proper, very near the Sta. Catalina Church and the Justice Hall Building.

Admission is free & donations are accepted. I rate it as "Average" because it is a relatively new attraction in Carcar. The displays & artifacts are quite interesting as Carcar is a very old town and holds a long history. But seeing the building itself is worth the trip. It is basically an old ancestral home that later served as a dispensary for emergency medical care. It has been extremely well maintained. It is located adjacent to St. Catherine's Church, which is also worth a look when you visit.
