More
The Thiepval Memorial, the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and have no known grave. Over 90% of those commemorated died between July and November 1916. The memorial also serves as an Anglo-French Battle Memorial in recognition of the joint nature of the 1916 offensive and a small cemetery containing equal numbers of Commonwealth and French graves lies at the foot of the memorial.

Don't use Google maps for last mile of directions. It gets you there, but it takes you across a field.

This is a must to visit, the whole area in fact, it’s staggering the names and numbers on the memorial and the facts as to why they are there, it’s emotional at the losses. We found my local regiments on the walls and consequently my...More

This memorial is a tribute to over 77,000 British lives lost on the Western Front with no known grave. It is a truly sombre and tragic place. The simplicity of the structure and its view over the surrounding battlefields is appropriate. A place to visit,...More

This place creates awe and inspiration to the power of humanity to overcome and survive even the lost terrible events with dignity and respect. This is not a celebration of triumph in war, rather a memorial to the power of people to give their all...More
