More
The Thiepval Memorial, the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and have no known grave. Over 90% of those commemorated died between July and November 1916. The memorial also serves as an Anglo-French Battle Memorial in recognition of the joint nature of the 1916 offensive and a small cemetery containing equal numbers of Commonwealth and French graves lies at the foot of the memorial.

We visited in mid May to find my sister in laws great uncle's name, which we did with the great help of the Common Wealth Graves Commission workers. It is 45 metres high and stands majestically over the surrounding country side, a sight to behold....More

As you get closer to the memorial you realise that every face of the base columns of this memorial is covered with engraved names of the missing during the battle of the Somme. It is beautifully kept and features gorgeous views, but it is emotional...More

A beautiful memorial to those lost at the Somme and never found. The number is appalling. On the other hand, many of those lost are actually buried in cemeteries maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, but are buried as unknown soldiers. Still, so many...More

Amazing story and such a shock to know just how many lost their lives and were never found. This is a truly great tribute to those people who may well have been forgotten. The museum tells the story of WWII very well and I learned...More

We began our journey through the Somme going to The Thiepval Memorial. How very sad to stand there on the battlefield of 100 years ago and see all the men who were lost, French and British buried in the cemetery and the names of all...More

Mid-April and tranquil as befits this tremendous monument to human folly. It’s far more impressive now the scaffolding’s down and the surrounding area tidied up. Car parking is free as is entry into the Visitor Centre; there is a fee to be paid for entry...More

Seen so many times on TV, I am so glad i have now been to visit, it is mind blowing - over 72000 men are named here, those with a name but no remains, unbelievable. It remains to be the largest monument to British Forces...More

This is one memorial that you are unlikely to miss since it dominates the skyline. A slow, reflective wander is almost certain as you see, and study the men remembered

Brilliant museum. On site BWGC team who are so helpful in helping research into family connections with WW 1 on the Somme. Came away understanding much more about the conflict along the Western front.
