Overview

Dating back to the 15th century, the Chateau de Pierrefonds was comprehensively restored and altered by architect Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century to transform it into an imperial residence for Napoleon III. The chateaux often seems to have been specially built for a swashbuckling film with its richly varied painted and sculpted decors, its defensive system and drawbridge, walkways and drop-boxes, not to forget the two reconstructions of medieval siege engines. Pierrefonds castle is the biggest we have ever seen and visited. Parking nearby is easy , in town there are many parking spaces ( free) it is only a short walk to the entrance of the castle. The castle is also accessible ( until entrance)...More

Imposing castle visible from miles around. Pleasant walk up from the town and beautifully restored. Very nice small gift shop at the end also.

Visited with our children 13,10 and 9. All three of them found the visit fascinating for different reasons. The Chateau is huge and presented beautifully. The detailed carvings and art are simply stunning, and the cellar is spooky and atmospheric. It cost €8 per adult....More

I learned a lot about history with the guided tour. If you take your student ID you get discount. It is well conserved.

We visited here as my 4 year old is obsessed with castles, and we were staying in berny riviere just 10 mins drive away. It is easy to find using a sat nav and is quite spectacular when you first spot it driving into town....More

It's beautiful and picturesque but rather outside. It is not so interesting inside. Pay attention to beautiful views on the village when you are inside the castle. I bet it looks even better when it's sunny!

An impressive castle, we enjoyed a walk around it, but decided not to spend money on the visit inside since the original castle was destroyed in the 17th century or so and was then rebuilt in 1897, so no authentic decor inside, unfortunately.
