Having lived in Yamaguchi prefecture many years ago, I had heard of the museum but never thought to go there. Finally 30 years later, for a ALT 30 year reunion, we took the ferry to spend time there. We were staying near Tokuyama Station so we walked over to the ferry terminal to take the 930 am ferry. You buy a one way ticket for ¥710 from the ticket machine. There are maps and ferry schedules available. We boarded the ferry soon and chose to sit outside on the upper deck. As soon as the ferry started many more passengers came upstairs to see the view but no more seating was available.
We got off at the first stop and headed right to see the tunnel and torpedo launch area. After that we hiked up the mountain to the top to see the torpedo observation deck and the view. We were the only ones that climbed it that day and it seemed like no one had gone up for awhile because some of the bamboo was getting overgrown. There were a few mosquitoes so I would recommend some insect repellent and definitely a towel. The bamboo forest was absolutely beautiful.
After going back down, we went to the museum for some much desired air conditioning. There are washrooms and costs ¥300 to visit the museum. They have photos and letters from the deceased soldiers who died as human torpedoes. There is a little information in English and a 25 min long video with interviews of the former trainees in Japanese.
Be sure to buy snacks at the 7-11 by the ferry terminal or in Tokuyama Station. There is one drink machine when you arrive at the island but nothing else. If you have more time, you could take the ferry to one of the other stops on the island to go to a beach. We took the 1 pm ferry back to Tokuyama. It was a different ferry that took cars and did not have an outside deck. You have to buy another ticket for ¥710 from the lady in the little building next to the ferry terminal.

I got the ferry from Tokuyama Port at 1040 just about 5 minutes from the train station cost is 710Yen each way. It arrived at Uzo Island about 30 minutes later but you need to stay on and get off at the next stop for the museum. The Museum and Tunnel are about 10 minutes from the the port, head to the right when you get off. Iys a bit of a steep hill upto the museum. Very interesting visit, needed about an hour in total, quite daunting as you walk along the tunnel that the Human Torpedos used for training. As you walk around the museum a English commentator explains over a loud speaker what is at each exhibit. I got the ferry back at 1300 and O think they run every hour.

I visited Kaiten memorial museum on July. It takes 40 minutes from Tokuyama port to Ohtsushima by ferry, and it takes 10 minutes from port to museum on foot. We walk uphill, finally arrived Kaiten museum. There are Kaiten model, sunken engine, and cenotaph outside the museum. Inside the museum, there are so many materials, pictures, and panels. The crew of Kaiten wrote a letters to their family. We can see the letter and understand their feelings. Of course, we understood why such a human weapon are invented. After we leave the museum, we can find the same geography that we saw the picture in the museum, for example, there is elementary and junior high school in the place where there was hangar in old days. Ohtsunoshima still show of Kaiten base. I recommend visiting the Kaiten memorial museum, Ohtsunoshima, and think about peace or WWⅡ.

I went to this museum from Tokuyama Port and it took about 45 minutes. There is a shop which sells drinks and souvenirs near Umashima port, but it’s so small. If you want to eat something, we should buy it near Tokuyama port. This is far from the port and it took about 10 minutes on foot. There are big model of Kaiten and memorial in front of the entrance of this museum. There is a theater to watch movie about history of Kaiten. In addition, there are many materials, panels, pictures and articles of the deceased. Oshima had a launching site to examine weapons. There are many picture of war victims. They were young men and their average age was 21.1 years old. They wrote many letters to their friends and families. I felt so sad and was impressed by their loyalty and affection. At that present time, there are many serious problem in the world. So I think this was a great opportunity for us to consider about the war and peace. We should understand their thoughts and background of Kaiten. I noticed we have to make efforts to build peace by supporting each other. In addition, I went to tunnel which is toward to launching site. There are some pictures of that time and we can listen to audio guide which explains about the pictures. After that, I could see the site where the launching test had been taken place.

I went there for the first time.
It was good that I could understand it more because I learned it beforehand.

I went to Kaiten museum with my classmates on 12 July.
I didn't know it in detail what happened at Ohtsu Island in the WWⅡ.
I think that we have to understand the history as a human.
Anyway, there was very strong wind in the Kaiten's tunnel. Be careful! Don't use an UMBRELLA!😊

I have been there for the first time, but I could feel the war´s horror at the time by seeing soldier clothes and pictures. And I found that almost all of soldiers were around 20 years old.
P.S. If you will go to the base near the sea in the rain, I recommend you not to use an umbrella.
