During autumn, I and my wife visited Naruko, which is famous for its distinctive style of kokeshi. That’s wooden dolls with brightly painted chrysanthemums.
Besides the gorgeous Naruko Gorge, we booked a session to have hands-on decoration paintings for kokeshi here. Great way to spend one hour or two. Perhaps you can book after sunset (quite early during autumn).

This shop has not only traditional Kokeshi, but also has modern pastel colored Kokeshi in various sizes and shapes.
Those pastel Kokeshi are exhibited at craft fairs in Paris a couple times.
They have painting class for Kokeshi or Pen-stand Kokeshi (1800 yen).
ACCESS: 5 minutes walking from Naruko-Onsen station.
