Kyushu has several scenic trains very convenient to tour around. Excellent structure and "bento" lunch box, you should get a JR Kyshu Pass (can get in Japan) to take advantage. Got this train right after Hayatono Kaze

Went the whole route from Kagoshima to kamamoto and then back on the Shinkansen. Great views from a quaint train that rattles across the tracks. First time I had ever been on a switchback rail system.

One of the most interesting train rides we have ever taken! Brought us to little towns, caught views which most couldn't and encountered the most friendly local residents. They waved us farewell and came out to help us take photos and sold little farm produce!...More

Actually, we started our journey from Hakata to Kumamoto via Shinkansen, then "Steam Locomotive Hitoyoshi" (SL人吉, a traditional steam train) to Hitoyoshi, right after "Isaburo Shimpei" to Yoshimatsu, also "Hayato No Kaze Express" to Kagoshima Chuo Station. Apart from the beautiful scenery from the trains,...More

A regular JR pass should be gotten before arriving Japan. On the other hand, you can buy JR Kyshu pass in Japan (need a passport) and enjoy nice train as Hayato no Kaze, Isaburo, Tamatebako, Kawasemi & Yamasemi.
