Murou-Ji Temple is indeed a site to be marvelled at. I love how peacefull and how not touristy is the place. The Temple coexist with the forrest. And I could litetally hear how quiet the place is. If you do go when it the Temple is shrouded with snow. It's really Magical.
When you arrive at the Murouguchiono Station go. There is a information counter with the Schedule for the busses. That departs from the station and from the busstop near the Temple.
The bus is a one way ride. and there is no stops. Just hop onto the Bus and the next stop is the Temple. Once you arrived at the bus stop. There are signs pointing the way.
The entrance price is 600 Yen. Do try the several shops just right outside the temple.

If you have time you mighy wanna check the Hasedera Temple that is also on the same rain line. Pictures attached are the bus timings. Hope that helps.

Muro-ji temple for women. When you visit it, you feel healing . I recommend you to meditate here. Meditation actually gives you more time by making your mind calmer and more focused in the temple. A simple ten or fifteen minute breathing meditation as explained below can help you to overcome your stress and find some inner peace and balance.Meditation can also help us to understand our own mind. We can learn how to transform our mind from negative to positive, from disturbed to peaceful, from unhappy to happy. Overcoming negative minds and cultivating constructive thoughts is the purpose of the transforming meditations found in the Buddhist tradition. I recommend you to visit Muro-ji temple when you feel unhappy.

Top class temple of Shingoshi religion of Buddhism in Japan. It used to be for ladies because Koyasan was just for men. When you climb to the Okunoin are, you will feel something utmost and sacred. Please try and feel more than religion. There are many national treasury there as well.

The inside of the precincts where you passed through the "Nio-mon(Nio Gate)" is like a forest with silent atmosphere. Each wooden building as "Hondo(Main Hall)" in the precincts is as if blending into the forest. Although Hase-dera Temple's wooden buildings still have artificial aspects, Muro-ji Temple makes the whole atmosphere like the inside of the forest.
However, you may have trouble visiting on rainy days. Some places in the precincts are muddy, and there are some places where large puddles are made. I recommend you to visit with easy walking shoes. Furthermore, on the rainy days, the steep stone steps from the five-stories pagoda to Okuno-in are very slippery. For such the days, you should not worship up to Okuno-in.
The view from Okuno-in is not so impressive, since the dense forest spreads out. On the other hand, when enveloped in mist, you can feel more majestic atmosphere.

Whether you believe Buddhism or not, I am sure that you love the serenity of this temple. The way to Okunoin Building is a steep slope, but you can feel well-done when you arrive there. Many flowers are in full bloom in April and in May. So, you should not miss this season.

What to say -- this was the highlight of our recent Kyoto / Nara trip.

It is difficult to describe the beauty of this forest temple – it is a series of small, 1,300+ year old small wooden halls housing fantastically carved wooden Buddha and other deity images – all of which are now National Treasures of Japan. The main “Kondo Hall” houses beautifully wooden carved image of the Buddha protected by twelve “generals” – so lovely.

The four wooden halls are amazing, the carved Buddha and deities are amazing, the forest location is amazing. You walk up to the top of the low mountain and along the path are these temples, the most beautiful and smallest 5-tier pagoda in Japan, and finally at the top of 700 stairs, another wooden hall filled with carved deities. It is precious.

From Kyoto, we took the Kintetsu limited express train to Yamato-yogi and changed to the local that took us to Muroguchi-Ono station. From the station, we were picked up by the Hashimoto Ryokan (where we stayed the night). However, taxis are available for day visitors. The temple site is located approximately 12 kilometers away through winding mountain road.

In the town, there is the Hashimoto Ryokan to stay, and a number of small udon restaurants for lunch, etc.

Muroji Temple can be visited in one day.

Not much of the foreigners as a visitors in this temple. We stumbled upon it because we were situated close by in Nishimine, one train station further. But what a site... A bus from some small village (a schedule is every 60 minutes so try to be punctual). 750 (or so) steps to the top... Be comfortable in climbing... Too bad we came in closing time so no time to investigate further.

Luckily I was, I got chance to visit KONDO in special season. In front of many Buddhists, I thought peace of Japan deeply. KONDO was built late 9th century and was kept beautifully. Its style of faith was changed some time in long history, but peoples love Murouji. Japan is most oldest country.

We got off at Muroguchiono and took a taxi (under ¥2000) to the temple as the bus runs only once an hour. Muroji is off the beaten path, so expect a quiet place. The temple itself shows a number of great statues and consists of several halls and a pagoda (apparently the smallest in Japan). What makes the place unique is the combination of nature and history. Expect to climb many steps.

A pamphlet is available in a number of languages. They have free wifi ;-)
