We stayed a night in this onsen town so that we could ride the first Kurobe Gorge train the next morning. It has two train stations, Unazuki Onsen station, for the local train from Toyama and Unazuki Station, for riding the Kurobe Gorge railway. It is a small town and suitable for walking around. However it was raining while we were there. We stayed at Yamanoha hotel which is large and has both indoor and outdoor baths. Although we could not walk to Yamibiko Bridge but we had a good view of both crimson bridges from the hotel"s lounge. Cafe Mozart is a pretty cafe for tea and cakes. Kajika serves Japanese food like Oden,

It is a small hot spring town with convenient transportation. You can directly transfer to the train from the Shinkansen station-Kurobe Unazuki Onsen Station. The station is directly located in the center of Unazuki Onsen. There are also many hot spring hotels that provide direct access to Kurobe Unazuki Onsen Station. With the shuttle service from Beunazuki Onsen Station, it takes about half an hour to get there!
The whole town is not big, but it is just right to stroll around without being too tired. There are not too few hot spring hotels and there are enough choices, but there are not many shops to visit;
But the main point of coming here is to take the Kurobe Railway sightseeing train to see the canyon scenery along the Kurobe River. After taking the train, go back to the hot spring hotel to soak in the hot springs and have a big meal!

This place is a good place to stay over the night if you want to ride the train of Kurobe Gorge.
We arrived around 6PM, and there was nobody in the streets! Too quiet that we laughed about it. However, in the morning the area around the stations were quite filled with tourists, mostly elders and photography-lovers.
The whole area is walkable. There was nothing spectacular, but for you who simply love walking around a quiet place and enjoying the atmosphere, it's worth touring around. There are few restaurants and hotels, everything are in walking distance. There is a free outdoor hot spring for feet. There is a viewing deck which is best to visit around Autumn.

Unazuki Onsen is a well-known hot spring resort that had attracted dignitaries' visits in the past. It’s in Toyama Prefecture and closed to the major cities such as Kurobe and Toyama by the Japan Sea. After we completed our Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route journey at Tateyama we extended our trip to Kurobe Gorge and Unazuki Onsen where Kurobe Gorge Railways’ famous Torokko train journey into the Kurobe Gorge starts. Visitors come here not only can enjoy one of the best onsens in this region but also have an opportunity to ride on the nostalgic Torokko trains into Kurobe’s mountain regions and famous Kurobe Gorge. It was a trip of lifetime for us, exploring nature’s wonders in and around Kurobe Gorge, the Kurobe dam and outdoor natural hot springs. Besides, we felt a sense of connection knowing that our President Carter and his wife had once found their ways to this place too.
If you plan to extend your journey from Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Routes to Kurobe Gorge/Unazuki Onsen you will need to take Toyama Chihou Railway’s Main Line (Blue Line) train from Toyama, no need to transfer, or if from Tateyama you then take Toyama Chihou Railway’s Tateyama ( Green ) Line, go on the direction to Dentetsu- Toyama, get off at Terada and make a transfer connection on the Toyama Chihou’s Main Line (Blue Line), go on the direction to Unazuki Onsen; travel time is approx. 1 hr. 46 min.from Tateyama. We stayed overnight in Tateyama, spent morning visit to Shomyo Falls and left for Unazuki Onsen by noon. Staff at Tateyama Station can speak English and will help you with ticket purchases and where to make connections and transfers. The train ride through scenic countryside and views of snow-capped Japan’s Northern Alps are breathtaking. Once you exit the Unazuki Onsen station down by the staircase, turn to left, walk along the side of the station you will find Tourist Information Office. If you take the elevator, then the Tourist Info. Office is just outside of the elevator exit. In front of the Station there is a hot spring fountain, a bronze statue and flower garden.
Unazuki Onsen is a small hot spring resort town; easy explore by foot. However, some hotel shuttles provide rides to the town’s main rail stations-Toyama Chihou Railway’s and Kurobe Gorge Railway’s. If you see your hotel’s shuttle stops in town or by the station you can get on and go back to your hotel. Some hotels also arrange free pick-up and drop off at JR Hokuriku Shinkansen line’s Kurobe Unazukionsen Station, but you must make pre-request and agree to the available scheduled time. After we checked in at our hotel, we took a walk to town center. We saw a free hot spring foot bath Kuronagi with pavilion at outside of Kurobe Gorge Railway Station, on the main shopping strip. We soaked our tired feet and enjoyed the foot bath experience, only two of us there at that time. We stayed at Unazuki Onsen’s Entaijiso for 2 nights in May, truly love this peaceful onsen resort which has attracted many Japanese and world known dignitaries such as U.S.A. President Carter and his wife; Emperor of Japan Hirohito, Nobel Prize Laureate novelist Yasunari Kawabata and several Japan’s Prime Ministers. Apparently this onsen hotel had been well regarded with excellent services and established reputations. Our journeys to this small onsen town and Kurobe Gorge were well planned after the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine routes.

Nothing fancy about the area but, being tucked away in the mountains, it's a great little escape. The onsen (spring water) was fantastic (silky & smooth and not too strong). At night, we enjoyed the locals dancing - "Echu-Owara" (during the last week of Aug and mid-Sept). The dancers were very beautiful and their movements so serene - a great taste of "REAL" Japan, as you can join in, too.

Unazuki onsen is a smaller version that what u get at Hakone or other popular spots. The railway ride is nice but the attractions are a let down. They actually closed some of them without telling us before we buy the tickets. We walk all the way to half way thru and see the barrier. Wasn't sure if it's due to typhoon effect from oct or due to winter.

We stayed at the お酒のお宿喜泉 and thought the meals and onsen were very good, the hotel has a serious plumbing problem but the ambience overall of Unazuki Onsen was very peaceful, felt one step away from the foreign tourist circuit in Japan.

The train passes by the local villages and the destination is a small onsen town nice for an outdoor onsen bath (for me in the winter). There is also a free public leg onsen for use. From this village, you can connect to Kurobe.

Hi, my son has a visible tattoo on his neck. Does Anazuki onsen has a private onsen bath for him?
Written April 19, 2019
Most of Japan’s Hotels with onsens are public pools separated by genders; a few do offer private onsens but with very expensive room rates and are hard to find. One solution is to cover it with water proof sticky patch like a large bandage that big enough to cover the tattoo. You may also check out the any pharmacy in Japan’s most visited cities they sell the tourists’ needs such as tattoo patches.

I am still planning my trip. The initial plan was to stay over night at Unazaki Onsen, then onward to kurobe gorge train ride the next day. However, the train ride for 2019 won’t be ready by the time I visit. I am visiting early April 2019.
Is there any thing to see at Unazaki Onsen? Besides staying at the hotel?
Thank you!

There are a few sightseeing point in town, other than the using of onsen-you can take a walk on the foot bridge and take pictures of Shin-Yamabiko Bridge. There are a few trail paths as well. The Tourist Office is just below the station after exit and take the steps down, turn left to the main street. Or take elevator down, exit it, you will see the Tourist Office when turn right. However, Kurobe Railway's electric train ride to the Gorge is the major attraction; suggested opening date around the first weekend of May 2019.
