It isn't everyday that one gets to see live giant salamanders. This is a small 2-storey building at the entrance to the Akame 48 nature trail. Here, you can view these unusual creatures in glass tanks and learn about them if you can stop long enough to read the scant information displayed. One gets a sense of the affection the staff has for individual amphibians in the way characteristics are ascribed to them, such as "tame but curious" and "turning from naive to mild". It was a pleasant distraction from the hike. Not to be missed.

This is found at the entrance of the wonderful Akame Falls.

While the center itself is a very small one with a few very nice looking salamanders, it is also quite educational to see salamanders up close and personal. The kids did have a good time in this place!

. . . foreign travelers, which is why this is the first English review. This series of waterfalls is not as famous as the one in Izu Peninsula. While Iga Ueno is popular with foreign tourists, they don't realize that the salamander center/Akame Falls are close by. I've seen the giant Japanese salamander on Japan TV, but this is really the only place where you can view them. What's nice is you can combine the museum with a hike to Akame Falls, so you kill two birds with one stone.

The problem with the hike is be sure to give yourself enough time. It is not a loop, so you have to hike to the end and then double back. I started at 3:00 PM in the afternoon which is not recommended, as I was paranoid about the time. I am a quick walker so I think it took me 2 hrs to get to the end and head back. It's a nice place to have an obento lunch.

It's sorta hard to identify every one of the waterfalls, and a lot of them were a bit obscure. However this place should not be missed to those going to Iga Ueno, to impart a bit of nature to the day. I had a rental car, which made it easier.
