Fascinating visit of a working bell foundry
Aug 2020
This isn't a museum, but a working foundry, so it's grimy, hot and space is tight. It's the real thing!

The commented visit is interesting and well explained. It shows the whole production cycle of a bell, with the different techniques and materials used depending on the bell size and use.

There is also a great selection of bells of various sizes to try out in the courtyard. I wouldn't want to live next door, because they are loud, but it is a lot of fun.

This really was a great place to visit.

fascinating visit

A most delightful guide who spoke excellent English and was very ready to answer questions. She was obviously very interested in the place herself and her enthusiasm was transmitted to us. I had visited the foundry about 7 years ago and it is much better now, with more things to do.

Well Worth A Visit
Sep 2019 • Couples
Most informative, guide very good at getting her message across. We went with a French group, having been given a printout of the tour written in English. We were encouraged to ask any questions if we needed clarification. Wonderful to see an old craft still being carried out. Fascinating place.

Interesting and fun visit and tour.

We decided to take a short walk from the center of the village to visit. We entered and after a short wait our guide was available. She spoke French but I was provided with a chart that provided me with the same basic information she provided. She stopped several times to see if I had questions at which point she spoke in English. As my understanding of French is pretty good I was able to follow along fairly easily. The guide was very informative. I truly enjoyed my visit.

Our visit to the bell foundry surpassed all expectations. Firstly the opening hours had changed two days previously, but seeing the shop still open we enquired whether it was possible to have a tour. They were so accommodating and an English guide was found within minutes. She was delightful and our session was interesting and informative. The foundry is quite small but the work undertaken is amazing. An experience not to be missed.

Somehow expected bigger complex but it was all there and couldn’t have been better.

Came in as a large party of English friends with our own guide who was friendly, concise and complete in her plain English description of the process and many of the technicalities and some history. Succinctly answered questions at every stage and showed examples and bells or incomplete bits at all stages. We weren’t there at a time when the fiery furnaces were ablaze but we understand that the order book is so busy that there is a reasonable chance that there may be some such excitement on your visit because this is very much a working foundry. In the yard outside the factory there are numerous hands on complete bells of all sizes and tones and loudness, which you can hit with a mallet or strike with fixed heavy hammer. There is a short video of the live process in the shop and a lot of examples of items made here displayed well and all for sale.

We highly recommend visiting the foundry.

Well worth a visit

To be frank this is not a place I would have thought to visit - but I went there as part of a group - and was so glad that I did. Visitors are taken round the foundry in groups led by a guide. Work goes on round you as you watch and learn - and believe me bell making us NOT a simple task! All of us found the visit very interesting and our English speaking guide was first class. The foundry was quite small but the visit took over 30 minutes as there was so much to see and learn. A very enjoyable experience!

Must while visiting Villedieu-les-Poêles

We visited the bell foundry while walking around the village and would highly recommend to any visitors.
The foundry operates much as it always has and it was refreshing to be in a work environment without everything being screened off.
We had an English speaking guide and learned a lot about the casting process.

Great insight into bell manufacturing

Took my daughter during October half term as we were in Villedieu on market day. Didn't have to wait for the tour, they started 2 minutes after we got there. Tour was in English and you get a good insight into how they still cast bells the same way as hundreds of years ago. Well worth a visit if you're in town for shopping/sight-seeing etc.
