Overview
More
Explore this 14th century courtyard castle in Doune, with a striking 100 ft high gatehouse and one of the best preserved great halls in Scotland. The formidable Doune Castle was built for the Regent Albany. The striking keep-gatehouse combines domestic quarters including the splendid Lord's Hall with its carved oak screen, musicians' gallery and double fireplace. This was used as a film location for the BBC production of Ivanhoe and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. As well as being heavily featured in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Doune Castle was also used for the castle known as Winterfell in the pilot of the award winning TV series Game of Thrones as well as Castle Leoch in Outlander.

The castle is a must see if you like wither Outlander or Monty Python. We even read somewhere that some scenes from Winterfell in Game of Thrones were shot here, but we didn't find any trace of that during the visit. The audioguide were really...More

It was great to hear the the series Outlander and Game of Thrones was filmed here or parts of it. That’s why we took the tour and loved it. As far as time there could of been more, the castle under renovation.

Tons of information about the castle via the audioguide, and it's narrated by Terry Jones since Monty Python and the Holy Grail was filmed here. Added bonus, additional commentary from Sam Heughan of Outlander. To be honest, the castle is rather ordinary, and unfortunately there...More

Great treat to heat Terry Jones narrate the real history of the castle and give movie history about where certain scenes of The Holy Grail were shot. For outlander fans there is a similar audio guide on the same device. We went early as it...More

Definitely worth a visit although with it being on the Outlander tour it is very popular with big tour groups. There are parking issues and it gets very busy. Lovely grounds, nice areas to explore and good gift shop.

Very interesting to see the film locations for several TV shows! We both used the audio guide which was narrated by Monty Python and Outlander actors. Picnic areas are available and there are some nice walks around the castle. The staff were friendly and helpful.

We visited Doune Castle on our Outlander tour. There are repairs going on, but the castle is in excellent condition. There's a lot to see, and I think we could have spent more time here. I didn't use the audio tour extensively, but when I...More

For a relatively small sized and less extravagant Scottish castle, Doune castle boasts of a pretty impressive movie and TV resume - Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Winterfell from GOT (at least partially in the pilot episode), Outlander's Castle Leoch, The Bruce among others....More

This castle was made famous by Monty Python and the Holy Grail as the predominant filming location for the castle scenes. The castle is well preserved, and currently undergoing renovation of the parapets and exterior walls, which makes some of the castle inaccessible. The audio...More

I don’t know, but I would guess yes. There is extensive scaffolding. It seems that they might be working for a while. You might call them to find out.
