Neighborhood: Greenwich Village
Commonly known as “the Village” to New Yorkers, it was here in Greenwich Village that both 1960’s counter culture and the LGBT movement were born. Famous for its bohemian past, head to Washington Square Park to get a feel for this diverse and energetic neighborhood. You’ll find NYU students, street performers, skateboarders, kids frolicking in the fountain, and locals relaxing and playing chess. Stroll the streets to discover a mix of majestic town homes and hidden bars and restaurants that give this neighborhood an old-school residential feel. When the sun goes down, check out one of the famous jazz or comedy clubs that still packs them in every night.

Lots of history here, but also lots of night life and it is an upscale residential area. Charming side streets.Visited May 2023Written June 18, 2023

The West Village was particularly inviting with cute tree-lined streets, brownstone homes, and shops and restaurants tucked in on many blocks. East Village was a little bit tired and worn-looking and not somewhere I’d go at night or spend much time.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 17, 2023

I would definitely recommend a visit to this area of New York City. The whole neighbourhood has a laid back vibe and there are lots of quirky little bars and cafes to visit. There are also some cool shops where you might find something a little unusual. It's the sort of area where you can just wander around get lost and immerse yourself. Highly recommended.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten December 28, 2023
- traveltheworld012Rochester, Minnesota13,849 contributionsMy favorite place in all of NYC, wonderful people live here.Whenever we go to NYC, we also visit here. Most recently my wife and I with another couple, walked here from the Flat Iron Building area (around 23rd St.) on Thursday, December 28, 2023. It was a nice walk and as we entered the Greenwich Village area it was like a walk back in time. Historic buildings, small family owned shops, little bookstores, nice comfortable coffee shops and restaurants and large trees shading the streets instead of mostly concrete and steel, here there are brick, wood and greenery. In a way, it is still the 1950s or 60s here. We enjoyed walking around the area, taking in the sometimes quirkiness but welcoming vibe. We spent 6 hours here and met a few long time residents. This is a great place for relaxation and enjoyment of a unique neighborhood. The only drawback is that we were here around the Christmas holiday and some locations were very crowded with tourists.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 3, 2024

We expected to visit Greenwich Village and it to deliver “ a village”. Perhaps we were a bit naive. It just felt like another section of New York.
We took a walking tour which I’ve reviewed separately but the streets just blended into one another, there was no real vibe or atmosphere. I guess we were expecting it to be like Hampstead in London but it didn’t deliver the same village feel, the exclusivity of independent shops or even the cleanliness.

I visited that place last year and it was the best outlier place I have ever seen in New York City..I also liked the culture in that place and the people were kind.

Washington square is beautiful but be prepared for a lot of homeless and drug addicts. Very very intimidating at night. In fact I wouldn’t set foot around that part of the village in the evening. In my opinion I would spend more time in the west village. It is just like how you expect Greenwich Village to look. Tree lined streets and plenty of restaurants and pubs. We enjoyed our time in Greenwich village and we would recommend it but do your research for the safe areas.

Nice area for a walk. I went in the morning and it was quiet. I loved seeing the Friends apartment as well as the sex & the city one.

Very peaceful and quite, strolling the tree lined streets. We saw Carrie’s apartment from Sex and the City, the apartment from Friends, the location of the Bob Dylan photo on the cover of the Freewheelin’ album, we passed Famke Janssen walking down the street and loved the small bars and restaurants. We stopped off for beer and pizza and found the area a peaceful break from the fast pace of the city.
Didn’t see one single drug addict or bad person as per what some other reviews have said.
We visited twice and when we go back to New York we’d definitely visit again.

You will love the beautiful houses and the stunning architecture here. Places you might recognise from movies.
Unfortunately, the area is also quite run down, and there are drug addicts everywhere, hanging around the park and streets, openly using drugs.
Very disappointing.

Paul says it all, but it is a charming area with cobbled streets and wonderful shops and restaurants. The Hy-Line walking park is well worth a visit, as is the new Whitney. Chelsea Market is an extraordinary warren of food shops and restaurants with every kind of offering available.

What areas (streets) are most picturesque? I am bringing my daughter and a friend on a photography trip of the city and they specifically asked to go to Greenwich Village.

I lived over 20 yrs in the area and am a photographer. If you are looking for buildings and historic charm, some of the oldest homes in the area are west of Ave. of The Americans (6th Ave,) and Bleecker St. In the next blocks you will pass Cornelia, Jones, Morton, Barrow, Grove (and cross 7th Ave,). till you reach Christopher St. You should walk left/south(mostly) and north off of Bleecker to see them. Chumly's, one of NYC's oldest bars and speakeasy is on Bedford - there is no sign. The original Sesame St. is on Barrow St.
The other option is to go east on Bleecker and there you will pass where the folk clubs and coffee houses, some still there. Don't miss MacDougal St. - 1960's music center!
If it's interesting people you want - they are everywhere.

Le Gigot at 18 Cornelia Street off 6th Ave. has delicious fresh food.
Buvette at 42 Grove between Bleeker and Bedford is also very good!

It's not even close. The best jazz place is Smalls. Go look at their lineups. It is the jazz center of the universe. You can watch jazz online live too. Smalls is amazing.
For history you have the Bluenote, Village Vanguard, and some other historic places.
If you want a more upscale purchase, head towards Lincoln Center or Dizzie's.

Looking for GV historic venue that would be open Saturday or Sunday afternoon (Nov. 11-12). Cafe Wha is evenings only. Not sure what else is left. Would like to have a drink anywhere that Dylan played. Thanks!
