- Susan MArlington, Texas2 contributionsLone Star Flight Museum is 5-starThe museum, located at Ellington Field, houses 20-40 planes and has a flight simulator for which you may purchase flights. Visiting planes are scheduled for a weekend or month at a time. You may also purchase actual flights on specific planes. Call ahead to arrange your flight. There is a gift shop and a restaurant is coming soon. “The Vomit Comet” is on display out on the grounds. NASA houses their astronaut training planes at Ellington Field. I would recommend allotting two hours or more to view the museum’s stock.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten September 25, 2023
- AMADALTXTexas31 contributionsNot Just for Aviation FansThis is a great family experience that provides some of the best restorations and easy/fast reads on each aircraft. We went on Thursday not realizing every Thursday is $5 per person. All the displays represented history with some modern aviation items. The educational section was fascinating for all ages allowing everyone to leave knowing general principals and practicalities of flight. You can get very close to the displays and appeared to be a very safe place to allow mature tweens-teens to walk through everything themselves. It’s quiet, but not museum quiet so kids are still allowed to be kids. The history of flight and military section was very informative and well done. Little kids may lose attention, but with its focus around Texas it does allow for some geography and history learning to make the moment teachable.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 24, 2023

A museum well worth the visit. Lots of Texas roots with the aircrafts. From the early days to the current drones. Fun simulators too especially for children.

This is a fascinating place for people who love airplanes! There are about 40, more or less, depending on the exhibits they are sponsoring. The wall are covered with details, photos and other data about the missions and flights the planes were involved in. We are members and go frequently as my husband loves to fly. It is about 30 minutes from downtown Houston. They have different events, depending on the time of the year...rodeo, Halloween, Christimas...We watched the new Top Gun movie on the big screen there. There are two large hangers and, of course, the runways...always something new to do!
GO...you won't be disappointed!

Our tour group had a wonderful experience here. They provided 4 guides and they were all great! A very impressive display of aircraft from different eras.

A superb museum about modern aviation and and history of air travel in our country and worldwide. Impressive display of retired airplanes including one of the first Continental air buses. The history and vintage planes were interesting and kept us busy for about 2 hours. Add this to your Texas bucket list. Among the coolest airplane museums I have been to in my life!!

The museum is extremely well done. All of the aircraft have some connection to Texas. They host the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame. Many of the people featured are well known at the national level, others may be less well known, but made significant contributions to the aviation and aerospace industry. To their credit, they put considerable resources into STEM education.

Couple this with Air Terminal Museum and gained a huge insight into the air travel, air history and impact of the flight world on Texas community. Highly recommend!

How many hours would you recommend for a family traveling to the US from abroad with only full 2 days to spend in Houston?

Can anyone advise which days of the week the museum runs their joy flights? We have tried contacting them directly but not had a response. Thank you.

I know that “ ride with pilot is available sometimes, not sure if it is in a published schedule, or just when someone is there, I know this doesn’t help, sorry
I was wondering do you have sessions at your flight learning academy for museum visitors during the summer holidays or is the flight learning only available to groups?

I am a volunteer docent at the museum. Our Aviation Learning Center (ALC) is currently one of only two in the USA. It operates weekdays for scheduled groups of students from 5th through 12th grades. On weekends, the simulator portion of the ALC is available to the public at specified hours as our Pilot Experience at an additional charge to the museum admission and with minimum age requirements. The full ALC experience takes about 3 hours for students to complete. Separate from the ALC is the museum's Flight Academy (FA) which is part of the general admission charge. The FA contains a number of hands on, interactive exhibits demonstrating the principles of flight and also includes 2 hang glider simulators. The simulators are great fun for all ages.
