- kevin h9 contributionsKing Tuts treasuresThis is a very old museum filled with more than one can take in. The amount of funeral goods was amazing. The coffins were very colourful and worth seeing. The highlight of course is King Tuts gold mask and treasures from his tomb. Well worth the visit.Visited March 2023Written March 19, 2023
- annmariezPortville, New York48 contributionsAntique antiquities museumVery old museum, stuffed with incredible treasures. Minimal signage- really better with a guide who can also make sure that you see certain things. You could spend days in here, but most tourists don't have that much time, so a guide is invaluable. It is certainly very crowded.Visited March 2023Written March 20, 2023
- Common senseAtlanta, Georgia28 contributionsShould be part of any Cairo tourExtensive collection of some of the most important objects on display in Egypt. Definitely worth a visit on even the tightest tour schedule. Great to combine with a visit to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization to see the actual mummies.Visited March 2023Written March 25, 2023
- William ZAnaheim, California98 contributionsGreat collection but crowdedI enjoyed my visit to the Museum for its great collection of artifacts. It was also well organized into eras and topics. The only drawback is the crowds. I think the museum should consider a reservation system and a higher admission fee to manage the crowds and provide a better experience. The gift shop and Cafe are top-notch.Visited March 2023Written March 25, 2023
- DushkasWorthing, United Kingdom327 contributionsLots of space and to appreciate what is there.Wonderful time here with clear descriptions on the artefacts. Only disappointment was the rude staff in the Tutankhamen section. He kept shouting at everyone to keep moving and clapping his hands. Out guide told us we need 15 mins in there but we were hurried out within 5 mins.Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 26, 2023
- AlmostgreynomadSydney, Australia1,086 contributionsGo early !Amazing ...... Lots of people and it is a bit airless. We were there early April. My advice would be to go as early as it opens ! King Tut exhibition needs to take a leaf from Disney's book about how to move crowds ! Highly recommend !Visited April 2023Written April 7, 2023
- HelenjenBrisbane, Australia849 contributionsStill worth a visit, when in Cairo! With the completion nearing of the Grand Egyptian Museum….well, within the next few years anyway….we were concerned that our visit to this amazing museum (our third) might be disappointing as we expected many of the exhibits to be moved to the new amazing modern premises. The good news is, they now have room to display many more artifacts that have previously been kept hidden in storage as there wasn’t the room to display them in all their glory. They now allow photos without a fee 😊 Definitely, still worth a few hours visit, just wish the authorities would realise that antiquities of this value/significance really should be kept at a constant and preferably cool temperature, or it that just the air conditioning companies that provide this advice?!!! Recommend if you’re looking to stay only 1 or 2 nights in Cairo, then Tahrir Plaza Suites – Museum View is just across the road and is value for money+Visited March 2023Written April 8, 2023
- Rachel548Farmington Hills, Michigan538 contributionsDon't miss the King Tut artifacts!Visited this lovely museum the morning of our second day in Cairo. I wasn't expecting there to be so many things to see! I know many objects already have been, or will soon be moved to the new GEM, but there is still so much to see. We really enjoyed our time here. As others have said, it gets really busy with large tour groups so try to get there early or just plan out the essentials that you want to see. Obviously, all of the King Tut artifacts should be on your list. They're stunning! Finally, the AC either wasn't on when we went, or it's just very low. The upper level and some of the smaller rooms can definitely feel stuffy. This is still a great museum to spend a few hours.Visited March 2023Traveled with familyWritten April 12, 2023

- Jason SMelbourne, Australia1,693 contributionsA Must when in CairoSo many impressive relics to see, very much top 2 things to do in Cairo after pyramids. Reasonable cost for entry, plus now you can take photos, last time at museum cameras banned. Go slowly and absorb the history of each section it’s amazing, make sure you see the golden mask from the boy king. It should be really good when they move museum to new building as this building is old and dirty.Visited December 2022Traveled soloWritten April 15, 2023

Definitely a bucket list ticked off!
Such amazing artefacts to see up close.
We didn't get a guide and just walked around ourself which was fine, it meant we could wander at our leisure and see the bits we wanted
Not everything has an enormous amount of information about it but there is enough.
Some areas could be updated to make them more engaging and accessible so good if you have prior knowledge. The cafes were OK but not fantastic quality, expensive.
The staff are very nice all around the museum and although some parts are busy it is big enough that it does not feel crowded.
We spent about 2 hours here and unfortunately ran out of time, I could have easily spent 3 - 4. There is so much to see what an incredible place

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo houses an impressive collection, offering a deep dive into the rich history and culture of ancient Egypt. The exhibitions themselves are fascinating, showcasing artifacts that are both educational and awe-inspiring. However, the museum itself is in dire need of renovation. To truly do justice to the invaluable treasures it houses and enhance the visitor experience, significant updates and improvements are necessary. While the museum remains a must-visit for history enthusiasts, its potential is somewhat shadowed by the pressing need for modernization.

The museum has a lot of treasure of Egyptian culture and the Rome, the guide available there could be more organized and trained. In general it was a good tour.

This venerable institution has been around for over a century and it shows. The displays are a mix of modern and very old fashioned. It may not see another 100 years once the GEM is fully open, but until then it’s the only place to see some of King Tut’s treasures. There are also wonderful statues and other artifacts to see so it is well worth a visit.

This is definitely a must-visit, but be aware that they are in the process of moving some items to the Grand Egyptian Museum so I don’t know how long this will be a “must-visit”. In terms of my personal experience on 23rd Feb, I had a great time as there was a lot to see.
Some reviewers recommend a guide and others don’t. I am in the middle. I went without the intention of having a guide, but when I got there I met Saleh El Deeb (you can find him on Facebook) after I paid my entry ticket (or he met me) and I ended up with him as my tour guide. I negotiated the price with him for 1 hour. He was very informative and told me about the highlights in the museum. He was also quite funny. I should note that there are descriptions on the items so you could visit without a guide (but not every single item has this).
After my guided tour was done, I ended up going around by myself to see items that were not previously pointed out to me. But I also went back to the items Saleh pointed out with the knowledge I had acquired. I personally liked this. If you decide to go with a guide, you can wait until you get there and one will come to you, or book with Saleh (his number is +20 155 404 4950).
N.B. entry to the museum was EGP 450.

Guide is very good idea to have with You if You are a tourist. We had our own Finnish speaking Guide and egyptologist ( White, female person) and local egyptian man started to shout to her with rage and anger outburst when she translated what the local egyptian Guide was saying. It was terrible when in the exit the museum staff smoked inside and inside at the museum shop next to the textils they were selling! If the museum wants more clients allow different language speaking guides to do their Jobs, if that is too much to ask then, please educate egyptian ladies to be guides in different European languages to be guides

This amazing place, soon to be overtaken by the new Egyptian museum, was one of the highlights of things we did in Cairo. The collections are vast and the items related to King Tut are truly amazing. It was impossible to see and experience everything. It is a wonderful introduction to Egyptian history and the exhibits are a wonder to behold. Going with a guide or at least an audio tour makes the history come alive.

There seems to be growing confusion over the following
A) can tourist buy their own ticket to all archaeological sites on the site at arrival?
B) can tourists pay for the tickets using a dollar money card backed by Visa or Mastercard ? Not a Credit card or bank account card?
Many thanks

Answering your questions :
1-) Yeas, you can buy a ticket in the site. Be prepared to face long lines.
2-) The most common is to use Dollar Bills.

Yes, its possible but we bought them at the museum. Its easy and not at all crowded (even during the Christmas). Egypt is currently not experiencing the crowd it is generally famous for. You can get entry tickets at all major attractions using cash/ VISA card with no hassle at all.

Creo que tienes que comprar en persona y tal vez en efectivo, dólares estadounidenses o euros solamente.

There are plenty of antiquities and mummies to see. Many beautiful breathtaking statues. Section of Tutankhamen is still there. I did not use a guide and went there myself. I was fine. Took my own time reading and looking and taking pics/ videos. There is nice shop inside the museum to buy souvenirs.

I bought tickets through the Museum's website but have not received a confirmation email or a copy of the tickets to show at the entrance. The tickets are for today. Do you know how I get my tickets? Thank you

Hi Jessy
This is probably too late for you, but may be helpful to someone else.
First, check your credit card to see if the charge went through.
Second, if it did, you can try contacting the Egyptian Monuments via Twitter or Facebook (links on on the EMonuments page where you bought the ticket).
Note the Egyptian Museum itself does not process the payments but Egyptian Monuments - a separate entity processes the payment.
Third, if the charge did not go through, you can buy a ticket at the ticket window at the Museum. Bring cash.
Why?
At several of the sites we went to see in Cairo in early October one couldn't use credit cards at the attraction , e.g., Sharia Muizz L'Din Allah.
And the wait isn't too long unless you arrive after several tour buses.
We had to wait about 10 minutes to get tickets when we came.
