Great market with lots of food options. Vegetable selection was not as big as I had hoped. If you are looking for real exotic stuff probably won’t see it here. But overall a fun place and great way to experience real native foods.

We went mid-morning on a Saturday as a stop on a private full day tour of the City. It was lively, especially downstairs by the food and plants, but what I appreciated most was that it was organized and has lots of space to move...More

This is definitely Da place to shop for classic Guatemalan style items. You will pay a third of what you would pay in Antigua or any other place. The people are very nice and will not pressure you to buy anything. If you plan to...More

To me, mercados are the heartbeat of a city. I love to explore them and look at the fruits and veggies. The herbs and spices. The food stalls. The tchotchkes. The kids and people. Well, when in Guatemala City, this is no different. When in...More

We like to take our American visitors to the Mercado central to give them a taste of the Guatemalan culture. It is so different from their culture and they get to se so many new and different things and try many different things.

It is better to buy here than at the airport, always negotiate better prices, offer to pay less, in Guatemala everything is handled like that. A 70Q souvenir you can pay 40Q.

I was suprised to see there was a lower level below the level of Guatemalan fare where produce was sold. There was allot of goods there for last minute shopping.

Our group went there to eat lunch (a local beef stew with rice and potato) along with trying various kinds of candy and fruits. There are some strange looking fruits here. We also got free time to browse the upper floor with its crafts. I...More

Right behind the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Mercado Central is a must. You can get lost in it. Wonderful crafts to delight your eyes and a great place to shop. Prices are incredible, but never pay what the sellers are asking for. Bargain, bargain and bargain....More

It's a VERY large market in the mddle of the city. It's clean and modern and as many have noted is underground. In general the quality of the handcrafts is nothing special. BUT if you spend a few hours poking around at the market you...More
