As part of a complex including the civic tower (look out for the stolen bucket) piazza and the cathedral itself it forms part a UNESCO world heritage site. It is worthwhile walking around the duomo fully to take a look at the door lintels and lunettes. On the north side there is a (supposedly) Arthurian themed frieze with knights jousting. The main entrance is equally appealing with some large lion sculptures that are Roman in origin. The Romanesque interior of the church is quite bare with ornamentation focussed to the high alter and side chapels. Notable is the terracotta altarpiece on the left.

This monument absolutely blows you away soon as you approach it. I had no plans to visit any attractions whilst in Modena but so glad I decided to take a walk one of the attraction highlights of my trip!

We have seen and been impressed by many churches in our visits to Italy over the years but in returning to the Duomo in Modena this trip we realize just how special this place is.
Its history, architecture and art make it one of the best. And even after spending 90 minutes on this visit, we still had to go to online sources to get more in depth information on what we had seen.
Truly a beautiful and historic building.

To visit Modena we contacted a local guide from the city and the meeting point was the small square in front of the Duomo entrance.
As we arrived before the indicated time, we made a visit first on our own since the entrance to the Duomo is free, and then when we repeated it with the guide we realized that we had missed a lot of details, so I recommend you to do the visit with a local guide
The façade has remarkable reliefs that include portraits of prophets and patriarchs, and many of the Biblical stories, which together form a masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture. The guide told us how the creation of Adam and Eve, original sin and the story of Noah are represented.
The cathedral is located on the place where the sepulcher of San Geminiano, the patron saint of Modena, was located. Previously, from the fifth century, two churches had been built on the same site, but both had been destroyed. The remains of the Saint are still on display in the crypt of the cathedral.

We have explored this awesome cathedral a few times and it is always a great experience. It takes at least an hour to see most of the interesting sights. No charge makes it even better.

Wonderful cathedral, beautifully maintained. Much plainer inside than, say, the Duomo at Parma, but immensely atmospheric.
The Piazza Grande is also amazing, as is the bell tower, and both are well worth a visit.

Have visited many historic churches, this may be my favorite—a true Romanesque gem. Fascinating carving of fantastic beasts of all sorts, and beautiful exterior and interior.

Beautiful, calm (in April, during Imola race weekend) church. Worth of spending some time here. Especially if you are a christian. Outside is even more beautiful.

Stunning place to visit, the light coming in was gorgeous. We lit a candle for the ones we love and have lost. Definitely worth a visit to see the architecture
