Experience an exhilarating Tasman Glacier heli-hike adventure. You’ll soar over the Southern Alps and UNESCO-listed Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park (40-minute flight time), then land atop New Zealand’s largest glacier for a 2-hour guided walk. Ice axe in hand, follow your guide over this frozen natural wonder to get up close to pinnacles, ice caves, crevasses and seracs. Choose from three departure times per day to suit your schedule. Snow gear and round-trip hotel transport are included.
What to Expect
Meet your pilot-guide aboard the helicopter and hear narration about the sights via a 2-way headset as you take off toward Tasman Glacier. Soar high above Aoraki/Mt Cook, the tallest peak among New Zealand’s Southern Alps, and look down upon the country’s largest glacier, including the milky blue waters of Tasman Lake, formed from glacial melt.
Upon landing atop the remote Tasman Glacier, disembark the helicopter and follow your guide on a 2-hour trek. Walk across a pristine alpine wonderland of dramatic ice-blue pinnacles, crevasses and seracs — normally only reached by skilled mountaineers.
If conditions allow, you can duck into an ice cave for an experience like no other. Your guide shares fascinating facts about the glacier’s geological history and its potential future, and offers a taste of pure glacier water.
Be sure to snap plenty of photos of the otherworldly landscape before re-boarding the helicopter for your return flight back to town, where you’re transferred from the base to your hotel.

Good, but not a ‘hike’

We originally booked to fly from Franz Joseph on their twin glacier flight which would have been 30 minutes with a landing and photos on the glaciers. Weather caused that to be cancelled so we transferred the booking to Mount Cook, and upgraded to the...More
