Whale Shark and Snorkeling Adventure from Isla Holbox
Snorkel alongside docile whale sharks during this eco-adventure on Isla Holbox. With your local guides, board a boat and set off in search of these gentle giants, keeping a lookout for other species like giant manta rays and sea turtles as you cruise. Slip into the water in pairs with a knowledgeable guide and swim with the world's largest fish, which can grow up to 45 feet (14 meters) long. On the way back to shore, stop near Cabo Catoche to snorkel the 'cuevones' reef. Continue to Santa Paula to go swimming and enjoy freshly caught ceviche before returning to Holbox. Use of all equipment, breakfast and snacks are included.
What to Expect
You will meet with your guide and group at the local restaurant Luuma (one block away from the tour operator's office) in Isla Holbox at 7am. There, you will have a small briefing and get all the necessary equipment. You will also enjoy a light breakfast to have a great start.

Then, you will walk to the pier, where the boat is waiting to start the journey to find the whale sharks. The trip will take you between one and two hours and you may find different species on the way (if you see a giant manta and its behavior permits it, you can also swim with this harmless creature). Once in the area, you will swim by the whale shark in groups of two plus the guide, for safety reasons and to ensure you get the best experience.

On the way back, you will stop near Cabo Catoche to snorkel the "cuevones" reef and maybe see sea turtles, nurse sharks, lobsters, squids, octopuses, and different reef fish. During the journey, you will get some catch of the day from a fisherman and prepare the freshest ceviche. Finally, you will go to Santa Paula, where you can stretch your legs, have a pleasant swim and enjoy the ceviche. From this point, you have a 45-minute journey back to Holbox.

Yes, you'll see sharks... but it is sleazy

They are getting 2 stars because yes, you see whale sharks. But it was horrific. We did the whale shark, snorkeling, and lagoon tour. When we all met up in the morning, we watched a video saying that we could only get in the water...More

A Whaleshark tour operator with integrity

We booked our tour a couple of months before we arrived in Holbox so we didn't realize that we were taking the tour right at the beginning of the season when the Whalesharks were just starting to arrive and to feed in the area. There...More

Poor Whale Shark got kicked a lot

Every morning at seven, tourists are being put into boats and the search begins. After two hours a whale shark was finally found. All boats (approximately 15 boats of 8-10 tourists each) were then in the direct proximity of the shark. Our guide took two...More

By regulations you swim two times. The trip will depend on how far whale shark are at the moment. The trip is 6 to 8 hours aprox. Boats will take up to 10 people, unless you hire a private boat.

It is not possible to know where whale sharks are before the season starts. But we always recommend to wait at least till June, so possibilities are higher
