This was my third time doing the BioBay kayak tour over the course of 10 years! I bring new folks each time and we're never disappointed. Our guides (Natalia, Javier, Enrique and Amaury) and Catalina made the night fun and educational for everyone. I never regret spending the money on this tour (and I recommend the earlier one so you can see the sunset and experience the mangroves in the light and the dark) and it's always one of the highlights of our trip. It's easy to get to the parking lot for all the kayak touring companies if you follow the directions provided in the confirmation and reminder notifications. You should not bring anything but yourself - so be prepared to leave phones etc. somewhere secure. If you're coming from outside of Fajardo, stop at the kioscos in Luquillo beforehand for a snack!

We are currently relaxing and still coming down from the rush after our tour tonight. Great experience. Absolutely wonderful your guides. Pure Adventure was a wonderful company for us. We originally booked the 6pm tour but didn’t realize we booked our group of two with a group of 28. Pure adventure called us a few days before our flight to Puerto Rica was planned and asked if we’d like to switch as they suggest we would likely have a better time if we went with other smaller groups rather than just us with a group of 28 who knew each other. So glad we followed their recommendation and so glad they thought tk reach out! Things to know-look into the moon phase. We knew we’d be here around the new moon, so we knew we’d have a good night. That being said, the bioluminescence is nothing like the picture you see online however it is still absolutely amazing and such a cool experiencing. Dipping your hands in the water and splashing it around to see it is absolutely unreal and I’m so glad we did it. Also the addition of pointing out the constellations was a highlight of the experience for both me and my husband. Word of warning - when they joke with you in the beginning that it takes good communication and tonight will be like couples therapy they are not joking. Lol…my husband had never been kayaking and it’s been a decade since I had, we struggled quite a bit on the way to Laguna Grande. But our tour guides were absolutely amazing, Natalia was great at helping guide us and making sure we understood what we needed to do to improve. Despite how frustrated we got while failing at kayaking the guides were so helpful without being condescending or overbearing and we were able to have a much smoother ride back. I highly recommend using Pure Adventure if you are interested in doing a bio bay tour of Laguna Grande!

Hola erinmariezee! Loved your review. Thank you for taking the time to write it. It is always in our best interest that our guests enjoy their time with us ;)) The glow is so different every single day. Some days it looks like diamonds, other days like a fairy dust, but we always get to see it. The stars, oh the stars! Magnificent view in clear nights and the guides know them so well! You made me laugh about the couples therapy :) It kind of is, communication is key while kayaking. I’m glad you guys passed the test hehe Thank you so much for coming! Natalia and her crew did a great job getting everyone kitted out, provided plenty of commentary to explain what we were seeing, and made sure the group stayed together. This was a very cool way to end our trip and well worth the money. My only complaint is that on the return I got stuck at the end of the group and was surrounded by people who were really bad kayakers; this forced the guide at the back to repeatedly switch on his search light to get them sorted out. That in turn killed our night vision during the section from the lagoon back into the canal where you get to see more of the bioluminesence. To be clear - our guides had no other choice and were working to keep people safe - I just wish I had positioned myself better in the group so that I could have seen more. Maybe next time....

Disappointing in numerous ways: Guides were obviously bored and not interested in sharing information or making the trip a fun experience. They rushed us through the mangroves, didn’t gave us time tonexperience the beauty of nature. Instead of the booked 2 hour long tour , they returned quickly so thatvthe whole tour lasted only 1h 10m. Wouldn’t go again as the bioluminiscence was hardly visible.
The group was huge - in total more than 15 kayaks. We were offered kid swim vests as they had not enough adult-size vests.
Would recommend another tour operator.

Dear 13flyingpolarbears, Thank you for your feedback. It is very important for us. In all the years that Pure Adventure has been providing services, the one thing that has never lacked is the fun experience. We are very sorry that you did not have a good time. Our guides and personnel have as a top priority to make every client feel comfortable and to provide a joyful experience. When entering the canal area (where the mangroves are) because of the current, it is important to paddle as fast as possible so that you are not dragged away from the group. This is also explained during the safety briefing and instructions given before starting the journey. The group that you went out with did not experience a shorter trip. On the other hand, the group was taken out earlier than usual because everyone was there early, and we did not want to make the group wait. Therefore, since the tour started way before the normal time, it ended before the normal time, but it was not cut short of the approximate 2 hours that the tour takes. Sometimes this may vary depending on environmental conditions. It is also important to note that by law we are required to take no more than 15 kayaks with clients. The number does not include the kayaks with guides. Additionally, it is possible that many more kayaks would be in the water at the same time since we are not the only company that operates in the area. Finally, since safety is our top priority, child life vests are offered to those who are smaller even if they are not children. This is to ensure that the person is secure in the life vest instead of wearing a vest too big that it will not keep them from slipping away from the vest. Once again, thank you for your feedback, and we hope to see you in the future on one of our trips. Cordially, Yolanda Ramos PURE ADVENTURE

Not a great experience for us. Went on the 8pm tour. The lagoon is quite congested with multiple groups kayaking. Once out in the bay, we had to link up with all the other kayakers and put a wet tarp over our heads to try and see the limited bioluminescence for about 5 minutes. The bioluminescence was very limited due to environmental factors that have been ongoing and cloud coverage that night. They told us to splash paddles in water to activate the bit that was there, but we were linked together so close there was no way to get more than a hand in the water. As we were kayaking through the mangroves to and from the bay, one of the guides sang a one man karaoke show at the top of his lungs the whole way. It's a shame, because there are a lot of natural sounds of coquis (frogs) and water fowl that could be appreciated while kayaking.

I did give an extra star because Jessica through the office was helpful with her communication. Our initial tour that was booked with transportation from San Juan several weeks before our departure was cancelled 6 hrs prior to departure due to lack of participants needing transportation. She was able to rebook us 3 days later.

I understand that companies need to stay afloat and pay employees. I just wish they were a little more open and honest with us about the experience (as in you will have a plastic tarp over the group to see for 5 minutes).

Dear Amanda K, As we mentioned in the same comment you post us on google, we are very sorry about your experience with us. We really appreciate your feedback since it is very important to us. It is always more beneficial to share concerns like these while at our site to allow for immediate clarification. We are always in the best disposition to hear from our guests. As you mentioned, bioluminescence is a natural effect that depends greatly on environmental factors. As such, we make sure to contact each customer to let them know about this ahead of time. Since our priority is always the best experience for our clients, we make sure to use any resource that would allow us to enhance the bioluminescence by blocking factors that are out of our control such as light pollution. One of these resources is the tarp which is only used when needed. The tarp is carried in one of the guides' kayaks which increases the probability of it getting wet with the splash created by the roes like it could also happen to anyone in a kayak. If anyone is uncomfortable being under the tarp, it would be appropriate to let the guide know so that accomodations can be made. Everything that we do in our tours is always done following safety protocols and with the intention of enhancing the bioluminescence effect. In turn, this maximizes the experience of our guests. As for our singer, I guess that we can ask our happy guide not to sing. ;) Thank you for taking the time reading our response. Always at your service. Cordially, Yolanda Ramos PURE ADVENTURE

We were a group of six adults ranging from experienced to novice paddlers. The wind was whipping when we arrived at the put in spot and we were concerned, but the guides were reassuring and off we went. They were right: we got thru the windy area and were comfortable paddling first in dimming light and then total darkness. We credit Sandra, Javier, Catalina and Anthony with our great experience. Sandra pointed out all sorts of wildlife we wouldn't have seen on our own as we travelled through the mangroves and explained what we were experiencing once we arrived in the lagoon. The bioluminesence doesn't really look like what the pictures show, and that should be better explained in ads so as to not lead to too high expectations. Overall great time.

Hello Jane, Thank you very much for your review. We are very happy that the guides made you feel safe at all times and that the experience was excellent! This reserve is packed with wildlife so during the sunset tours you are able to enjoy it, which is a plus ;) Our promo pictures actually represent the real thing. Still, the bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon. For that reason, we have already taken the step to explain in our webpage and in the confirmation notes that variations in the intensity of the glow could happen any day without previous notice. Nevertheless, the Bio Bay tour is one of the very few adventures that can be done at night ;) Thank you so much for visiting us. Cordially, Yolanda Ramos PURE ADVENTURE

This was a major disappointment. My family of five went out in a Friday night. I was paired off with a stranger because the kayaks are for two people. The option to go solo was never offered. I did not see two of my kids the entire time. I paid $300 for a moonlit kayak trip with a stranger who didn’t say two words to me and seemed to think we were in a race, despite my telling her that I am here with my family (meaning, I’d like to see them here and there). Driving home from the experience my husband and three kids all said that the guides were annoyed with them. It is very difficult going against the current, but add to thy the fact that there are literally about 100 kayaks going in and out of the bay at any given time and it is chaos. I can’t count the number of times I was hit by a paddle. They take way too many people out at a time for it to be enjoyable and don’t give ‘real time’ guidance. The guides were nice and knowledgeable, but this experience was only worth maybe half of what we paid. We sat in the bay and learned about constellations for a while and then sat under a smelly tarp while looking at the bioluminescence in the water, which was cool, but not what I expected. Many people in our group were complaining that it was just too crowded to be enjoyable.

Dear HopeSo Too, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, I am very sad, and empathized with you and offer my apologies. I understand how you feel. I would like to clarify a few things. We like our guests to get prepared before coming to the tour, so we provide helpful information in our webpage and reservation system. There we specify that all the kayaks are tandem, for two guests. If we have spaces available on the tour we would gladly offer to go alone, but when all spaces are reserved every guest will go with a partner. One of the guides was towing your kids because they were having difficulties, so they were moving a little slower than the rest of the group, but remained with the guide at all times, and safe. During high season, just like in Disney, the place is crowded. For future travelers, we encourage to plan your visit during low season for a more relax experience. I hope that you might decide to visit us again in the future during low season. Kind regards, Yolanda Ramos PURE ADVENTURE

Our family of 5 did the 8:30 bio bay kayaking and it was the highlight of our trip to PR. The bioluminescence are stunning and the kayaking was a blast-even for these novices and kids (ages 12, 10, 10). The guides were kind, unbelievably helpful, patient, knowledgeable, and funny! Special thanks to Sandra, Javier, Natalia, Antoni who led our tour, towed some of our crew when needed, repeated directions for me, gave a marine-biology lesson on the science behind the shimmering water, and pointed out the constellations, too!

The sparkle of the bioluminescence is remarkable and is not to be missed. I did a tour of the bay when I was in college with a different company and Pure Adventure was so much better! I was nervous about going with my kids and Going at 8:30-I did not need to be. We memories that will stay with us always.

Thanks SO much!! I wholeheartedly recommend this company for the Bio bay tour and wish we had booked more activities with them when planning our trip.

My family enjoyed our kayak tour with Pure Adventure. Our guides were knowledgeable and entertaining, especially Enrique, who serenaded everyone through the river path under the mangrove trees to the lagoon. Natalia, Catalina, Amally, & Javier made our trip efficient and safe. Once in the lagoon, they provided a tarp to cover the kayaks so that you could really see the bioluminescent algae glow on your hands, feet or whatever you stuck in the water. The moon was almost full on our evening tour, which can affect how you see the glow.

Amazing experience for all ages (we had a 9 and a 6 year old with our group). We had Javier, Enrique, Amaury, Antony and Catalina in charge of our group. Everyone got to see and witness an ecological area that’s unique and among a few in the world. The guides started the excursion explaining safety rules and explaining how to safely and properly operate the kayaks for those with little to no experience. Then throughout the trip they pointed at flora and fauna and talked about their importance and significance for the ecosystem of the Bay. We went before sunset so we were able to witness the beauty of the sunset across the bay and behind the light house. Then right after dark we witness the unique water glow from the dinoflagellates. An amazing and unforgettable experience. The paddling wasn’t bad even for the non experienced ones. The guides are really there to make the experience a positive and family friendly one.
