- ltine0 contributionsAmazing views, great guideMe and my husband had a great time on our hike. The description of the tour was accurate. We had more than enough snacks provided by the tour guide. It was chilly in the morning, so make sure to dress in layers. The views of the canyon were amazing!! The spot we chose for lunch by a lake was beautiful and secluded. The route we took was not crowded at all and you got to see so many of the different landscapes throughout Yellowstone, including thermal features and view of Hayden Valley. We also learned a lot about the geography of the canyon. Me and my husband are moderately fit and there were only a couple spots where it was a little treacherous but the pace of the hike was fine. I forget our tour guide's name, but he was very knowledgeable and clearly loves hiking in the area. Recommended if you want a nice hike and a variety of views without having to think about any of the navigating!Written January 16, 2024

- 55dirtroad0 contributionsGreat TourIt was a great tour of the upper loop. Mark was very knowledgeable on the park and it’s history. When it was over he shared the photos he took. He was even able to find us a pack of wolves putting the sneak on a herd of Buffalo with the spotting scope that he brought along. Very satisfied!Written September 30, 2023

Guide was personable, knowledgeable, fun, and turned our group of "new friends" into a happy hiking family sharing this unique experience. Very safety oriented. Loved the safety info that was provided for the rare event of a bear encounter. Guide kept a good pace and plenty of stops to chat and use the "FacilaTree's." Enjoyed the snacks and "World Famous Turkey Sandwich." Great job Yellowstone Hiking & Kayaking Guides...the Irishman is happy!Written September 28, 2023

- F3087UOjohno0 contributionsAmazing hike along Grand Canyon of Yellowstone rimThis was a truly fantastic hike with Emily Jo who's knowledge was outstanding, the views from the canyon rim are simply breath taking. It was great to spend the day with Emily Jo and it gave us a really fantastic insight into the park, other areas to visit in the park and what could be seen at different times of the year. We were provided with a very tasty picnic lunch and sat on the edge of the canyon taking in the views and scenery whilst eating lunch. We couldn't recommend Yellowstone Hiking highly enough and will book again with Emily Jo when on our next visit to Yellowstone, thank you Emily Jo for your company and a great hike.Written September 27, 2023

Lunch and snacks were provided, and the guide was very knowledgeable. The weather was beautiful out (September 2023), and we saw several elk.Written September 26, 2023
- 523brianan0 contributionsAMAZING KAYAKING TOURWow what an incredible excursion! We kayaked six miles and saw two bald eagles on the way along with a geyser that rarely erupts! Joshua was our tour guide and extremely knowledgeable about the area and provided snacks throughout the day! Would definitely recommend to anyone for great views of the lake and a wonderfully unique experience!Written September 26, 2023
- janefK3640BR0 contributionsWonderful kayaking tourWe arrived early for our 8 am tour and Josh was already setting up for our tour - hot coffee and aussie bites to keep us occupied and warm. It was a nice grouping for our family. Josh gave us good information on our tour and how to paddle effectively. Weather was a little undecided but we still saw elk and bald eagles. We covered 5 miles in total and our family was thrilled with our experience. Lunch was well-received on our return. Josh was so helpful, communicative and friendly.Written September 25, 2023
- Pittsburghsunseeker20 contributionsAwesome ExperienceMy wife and I took the kayak trip on Monday September 18th. It was a little chilly in the AM but warmed up to be a beautiful day. The scenery was gorgeous, we had the lake to ourselves. The group we were with was great. Our guide Josh did a wonderful job. He was extremely knowledgeable of the Yellowstone Lake and Park as a whole. He was very personable and made the trip very enjoyable. We ended our 4 hour trip with a bag lunch on the beach that couldn’t have been nicer. I would highly recommend this trip.Written September 24, 2023
- davehI1954BD0 contributionsDo Not BE AFRAID - it's AWESOME.I did the 8 AM kayak tour last week. I'm 68 and none of the concerns I had about going were worth worrying about. The temperature had gotten up to about freezing by the time we left -- but I never got cold. I only had 1 pair of shoes with me (hiking shoes), and they never got wet. I had never gone 6 miles in a kayak and never kayaked at this altitude. I didn't get winded or even break a sweat. The views were stunning and totally unique from the water. Josh was extremely knowledgeable. I tried to stay within earshot of him most of the time. Excellent trip. I would recommend getting there an hour or more early and going to the West Thumb geyser basin (<10 minutes away) for sunrise and then going back afterward. It looks totally different in the morning fog, from the kayak, and with the noon sun.Written September 22, 2023
- Dawnn G0 contributionsYou HAVE to Take This Tour!Jackie was phenomenal!! She was bright, chipper, and so knowledgeable and informative! It was an all day tour but never felt it. Even during one of our stops, she sought our more information to share while we checked out the sights. Everyone on the tour was so nice, like we all were old friends. The beauty was astounding. We had never in our lives seen anything as beautiful as the falls at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. This tour was totally worth the price!!Written September 21, 2023
- seafan420 contributionsHighly recommend this hikeEmily Jo was knowledgeable, flexible and fun. She pointed out wildlife that we would’ve missed had we gone on our own, and also talked about various cultural and historical aspects of the land we were passing through. She altered the route of our hike at the group’s request so we could get up a bit closer (but still at a very safe distance) to watch a wolf. She was fun and easy-going and attentive to everyone in the group.Written September 21, 2023

Jake, our guide, arrived 45 minutes late with only a minimal apology for construction traffic which we were all aware of (and he should have planned for). The entire hike was from 9 to 1:30 and so for the $364 my husband and I paid it was definitely not worth the cost. Jake was a nice guy and knowledgeable about history and nature. We were disappointed that he mentioned tips and we did minimally tip him, but feel that he really just went through the motions with some planned props set up on the trail. This is a hike through a marked trail with only slight deviations and no real extra insight into spotting wildlife. We saw bison, a badger, some proghorns and a lot of ground squirrels. My husband and I actually spotted more wildlife, including a black bear, on the ride to and from the hike meeting spot. This is a nice hike which could easily be done without paying $364 and without a guide.

Thank you for the review. I am very sorry to hear that your guide asked you for a tip. That is certainly not what we stand for. We know that tips, if offered, are earned through outstanding service. I know the construction on the road has been rough on people, it's usually a 20 minute delay, which the guides account for, but I have heard it can be as long as 45 minutes sometimes. Thank you for your review, this is important information to help us provide a better experience. It is true, that some days you can see more wildlife from the road than from the trail. But I find that being out on the trail is also about being away from the road. Jake is a good, safe backcountry guide with a great program and he's good at spotting wildlife and leading the group around these dangerous animals, but we will ask him to stop asking for tips and to try harder to be on time.

Emily Jo was wonderful, knowledgeable, and warm. She paced the hike to accommodate everyone's abilities, had a delicious lunch prepared for everyone, and made the hike a lot of fun! We saw bison, a ground squirrel, and longhorn sheep (what animals you see depends on what month you visit Yellowstone). We saw pronghorns and deer on our way to the trailhead. We felt very safe and appreciated her taking time to talk about safety at the start of the tour. Would 100% recommend!

Yellowstone Hiking Guides was terrific. They answered all questions prior to the trip promptly and are easy to contact. The tour itself is fantastic, a great opportunity to get out in the valley closer to the bison herds and the pronghorn. Our guide Mark was great. He has a lot of knowledge about the area, plant life as well as wildlife. He was great getting us close to a bison herd taking care to watch their movements so that we could maintain a safe distance. He has a good sense of humor and pleasant way of pointing out things we would have missed on our own. Great lunch in a nice spot.

We had a wonderful and very educational hike in the valley with our exceptional guide Mark. We were a group of 7 over 60 + friends and Mark was very good at pacing the hike -especially after the hills! We saw bison, prong horn , and a badger up close and personal.
Mark was professional, very educational, and we felt safe the whole trip. We enjoyed a delicious lunch at a beautiful serene spot by the river. It was almost 7 miles so we felt very accomplished at the end of the day! Thanks Mark hope to see you again!

Emily Jo took us on the Lamar Valley Safari Hiking tour and it was the highlight of our entire Yellowstone trip. We went off the beaten path, following bison trails to areas we never would have seen otherwise. We were lucky enough to watch a wolf hunting (!!), as well as tons of bison, marmots, ground squirrels, and pronghorn. We also enjoyed a delicious lunch at a secret, peaceful riverside spot. Emily Jo is filled with Yellowstone knowledge and the day just flew by. Most impressively, she saw a potential situation forming where some other hikers were agitating a bison, and calmly led us off the path and out of the way well before the fed-up bison turned and ran by where we had been - she is a total pro reading wildlife and keeping everyone safe. This was a blast and I can't recommend it enough!

This was a fantastic tour and we had a great tour guide, Alex. Alex was well informed, polite, friendly, and fun. The hike was roughly 7.5 miles and we stopped for lunch by the river. Lunch was a simple sandwich but it was quite tasty in the heat of the day! Snacks were also provided which was greatly appreciated. I’d HIGHLY Recommend this tour to anyone looking to get out of the tourist areas and get the real feel of a pioneer.

Mark was an amazing guide! On our hike we were able to spot a wolf pup, grizzly bear and a badger in addition to prong horns, bison and ground squirrels. He was eager to share his knowledge of the flora and fauna and patiently answered our many questions, all the while ever mindful of our safety. I would recommend Yellowstone Hiking Guides to anyone who wants an in depth experience of Yellowstone.

Our time with our guide, Jake, was so much fun! We had a smaller group that day and the other couple was fantastic company. It felt like a very intimate family group experience. Jake was calm and easy going, yet very aware of safety and best practices when it came to wildlife encounters. We saw primarily bison, badgers, birds and pronghorns during the tour, but the real treat is walking through the lively Lamar Valley meadows and learning about all the history and plant life shaping the region and maintaining the wildlife. If you’d like to enhance your experience, I highly recommend driving to the trailhead very early as the drive alone is breathtaking and you may hear/see the wolves that tend to come out in the pre-dawn/late-evening hours. I highly recommend this day hike for a less-crowded, more immersive experience than the typical Yellowstone attractions.
Addressing a previous review: Jake mentioned tips, however, it was minimal and no more than any of the other horseback riding, kayaking and hiking tours we have previously been on. Guides are at a shortage these days and we were more than happy to share our appreciation by tipping our guides.

The Lamar valley is a very special place and of course the animals were, as all always the stars of the show. Mark, our guide made the experience even better, with his attention to detail and knowledge of the area. Mark was also very friendly and by the end of the day had our group all chatting together as though they were old friends. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and would recommend the trip to anyone.

My husband and I did this tour on our first day in the park, and we're so glad we did. Emily Jo is the world's friendliest human, and her enthusiasm is contagious. Her knowledge about and respect for the park and the animals who live in it started our trip off on the right foot. We learned so much and enjoyed ourselves completely on a beautiful day in a special place. Thank you, Emily Jo! - Adam and Heather
