About
The Bonneville Salt Flats are a unique geological wonder seen in very few places around the world. We will travel there (1.5 hour drive one-way from Salt Lake City) in a 9 person Van. We'll share some amazing geological facts about the lake, it's history and current state. The expansive wilderness and drive to the Salt Flats is simply incredible.
While the drive is quite far to the Salt Flats from Salt Lake City, we stop a couple times to help break it up. We drive by the southern edge of the Great Salt Lake and stop at the Visitors Center. We stop at the Tree of Life Sculpture and at 2 different points at the Flats themselves
*The Salt Flats dry in the summer and typically wet in the winter.
When wet, it's often calm, sending mirror like reflections of the mountains in the background.
If it's wet we'll bring our gum boots and walk out into the flats. The photo opportunities and Views are endless!
Walk: Easy + Flat, 1 mile out and back.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- saA8537AR0 contributionsBeautiful experience with anazing guideOur guide, Phil truly made this experience special. His love and knowledge of the wildlife and nature of Antelope Island was absolutely awe-inspiring. Its a nice quiet island and we were able to peek in on two different fields of bison. Watching the pink and blue mountains change to gray as the sun set was filling to the heart. Phil, being a treasure of a human being, recited poetry and even played the harmonica as the sun went down. The best part was experiencing this surrounded by family. Thank you for creating an unforgettable experience.Written December 7, 2024
- jodif6680 contributionsFantasticSuch an amazing trip. Cramon was not only a great guide but super fun to talk with. We saw bison, an antelope, coyote, and the most amazing sunset ever!! We saw a lot of sunsets on this trip and this was the best. Thanks Cramon for you hospitality!Written October 31, 2024
- AlisonK3720 contributionsWonderful way to spend an eveningThe trip was wonderful. Garth gave us an excellent tour and we got to see so many animals. We never felt rushed and had a very enjoyable evening.Written October 21, 2024
- m100554060 contributionsWorthwhileWe enjoyed the tour. Rick, the driver was very nice and drove very safely. We saw a lot of interesting things including the Olympic training area and the Park cities area. We enjoyed both. Rick went at a very good place for both my wife and I. There are only two other guests on the trip and they were very nice also.Written October 5, 2024
- katrinalR3333BD0 contributionsNice tour and short hike with beautiful western scenaryNice guided tour in a comfy van with only 9 folks. We were lucky to see not only the bison herds (some at the roadside and others in the distance) but also antelope and mule deer. The hike to watch the sunset was not suited for anyone with trouble walking, poor balance, or unsuitable shoes but great for anyone in good health. The sunset was spectacular over the lake, framed by the boulders of the peak of the island. If you have your own binoculars, bring them because they only have 2. Our guide Craydon(?) was personable and well informed about the lake and wildlife and was safety conscious on the hike.Written September 30, 2024

Plenty of bison to see and our guide Phil made sure we got to take as many photos of them as we wanted. It was a beautiful evening capped off with an amazing sunset. - Sandra B0 contributionsNever Again!I am so disappointed! I waited and waited for my pick up. I called the 800 number because I was only getting voicemail when I tried to contact the guide. My reservation was cancelled, and I am get to get a reason why it was canceledWritten August 30, 2024

- b3llav1ta0 contributionsUtah sunset at its best! This was a great tour to experience. I totally missed the info on the hiking part but it was totally doable even with a knee that has not fully recovered from an injury. Cramon, our guide, was so attentive. He even took great pics. Without hesitations he offered some help as a couple of us were having difficulties descending the hill. He also managed to keep the bottled water cold (trust me, it's so much better to have cold water than room temp or even warm water from the sun especially after the hike) and he had a tray of snacks ready in the car. A couple pair of binoculars were also available for participants to use during the tour. Sunsets in Utah is definitely something else, and watching it from the top of the hill took it up just a few more notches. If I may have a suggestion is to have a better step stool (a two steps maybe?) to get in and out the van. It's a challenge for shorty like myself and even more so with a recently injured knee.Written July 10, 2024

I’m so glad it was Rick who took us out to the Salt Flats and The Great Salt Lake! He was absolutely incredible. Offered a lot of Salt Lake history as we drove, he is very kind, and made it a point to connect with each passenger. I went solo, but never felt alone! I hope anyone looking to see these beautiful places- you are in the care of Rick!

Stopped by the Bonneville Salt Flats during our road trip. It was easy to locate and get to. Unfortunately, there was no driving on the flats due to water standing on the area. Heavy snowpack was causing water issues when we visited.

This tour was wonderful. It’s a long way to the flats but the drive is worth it. It is a very unique experience. There are a few stops in the way to break up the trip.

What a vast view. Annoying that people don't pick up their dog's droppings! Worth it to have someone else drive the two miles out and back for me. Salt will get on your shoes, but the views are worth it!
