Fantastic MLK Jr historic district tour
We had a great Saturday morning tour of the MLK Jr. historic district in Atlanta's Old Fourth Ward. Our guide, Kristin, was extremely knowledgable and clearly felt very connected to the history of the area and its relation to the civil rights movement. We covered a lot of ground (literally) in the 2.5 hour tour but our 11 and 9 year-olds had no trouble keeping up. Thanks to Kristin and Unexpected Atlanta -- we will be back for more tours!

go and experience some Unexpected Walking tour fun!
So much fun! teenage niece visiting and decided to take a leap and sign up for a tour. I was worried the teen would want to quite but in fact she loved it. We walked, listened to history of the art and neighborhood, had a yummy homemade cola drink, and even did an art project. Price is great for all we did. We were able to sit down in the shade while our amazing tour guide Ariel ( graduate from SCAD gave us insights into the history of the neighborhood so the 1 mile walk was 7800 steps and wasn't bad at all. Even got to meet one of the mural artists who happen to be eating lunch near us. Our tour group was fun, some also from atl and some from out of state. We drive by these pieces of art all the time so it was wonderful to understand their history. We came away with a new appreciation and wanting to take another tour in our city.

Knowledgeable guides, quick to learn our names, tied the various stops together by describing a history of bread. Great tastings.

Margaret, was fantastic. Tour started on time and we immediately were made to feel that we were in for a treat. Margaret's knowledge of not just the food but the history behind the town and how it integrated with todays life really was inspiring.

Would highly recommend this to all visiting the area, and have already started planning the next one.

Thanks again for an amazing experience. Keep up the great work!!

So happy to hear you've had a great tour experience with Kristin, and Kevin on our Grant Park Past and Future Food Walk; especially so as an ATLien! It's often hard to find new and unexpected things in a place one may already know well, so we're absolutely thrilled to have risen to the challenge! We do hope to see you again sometime soon!

I recently took my whole team (about 30!) out with Joy and Martha on this delightful walking tour. The food was awesome, as was the history and the things we saw. Everyone had a great time. Since I love architecture, I'd have loved to go deeper into the neighborhood of cute victorian houses but that would be the only thing I could think of to improve the experience. Highly recommended!

Can't say enough good about this tour. My son might have a move to the area in his future so we decided to explore Atlanta a bit over the holidays. I know from past experiences that food tours offer a lot in the way of history and good local information. This tour does not disappoint! Jamie is the absolute best. Very fun, very informative, and clearly very passionate about her subject(s). We had a great afternoon meeting new people, trying fabulous food, and learning quite a bit about some of Atlanta's history. I couldn't pick a favorite food at the end of the tour - they were all that good. Great knowledge for places to try later and good suggestions from our best resource/tour guide! Thank you so much for the fun time spent with you.

Joy was our guide and was fantastic, fun & very knowledgable. I have lived in Atl since 1974 and never visited Castleberry Hill area. Very interesting to learn the role Coke had in the Civil Rights movement. MUNICIPAL MKT is someplace everyone in Atl should visit. Will definitely book another tour. Joy rocks!

We had no idea that our first visit to Atlanta will be such an amazing experience. We took this Food Tour on our last day, It was an amazing tour. What made it extraordinary was our tour guide Joy. She was so knowledgeable and full of energy. She was explaining so much of history at each stop. The food was excellent and plentiful. They gave us large portions. Food at Paschal’s (Fried Chicken, Grits and Candied Yams) was a great start. We particularly enjoyed the South African Meat Pie at Panbury’s. The Smoke house BBQ and Moonshine were delicious. Arden’s Garden Healthy juices and Kale chips was such a great treat. The Classic Soul Food, Just add honey tea and Ms D’s Pralines were also very delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed this tour. We enjoyed learning about the history.

As first time visitors to Atlanta, this tour was the perfect introduction to the culture of the city. From the typical soul food to the southern hospitality of Miss Ds candy shop, we felt welcomed immediately. The tour gave us a great overview of history of the city and an introduction into various types of southern cuisine.

Our tour guide, Jamie, was a hit! She made everyone feel welcome and was extremely knowledgeable of the history, restaurants, and cuisines of Atlanta. She embodies southern hospitality through and through, always making sure the entire group was taken care of. Bonus, she took great photos of us!

I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting or living in Atlanta!

We started at Paschal's restaurant where we had fired chicken, cheesy grits and candid yams. It was great. Our second stop was at a BBQ place where they served us BBQ, fatback, Brunswick stew, mac & cheese and collard greens. Jamie, our tour guide was great. Along the walk to our next stop she would talk about the places we were passing and Atlanta history. She was really knowledgeable and enjoyed her job. She took pictures of us and sent them to us after the tour. The final stop was at Sweet Auburn Market where we tried a variety of different foods. I would really recommend this tour.

Review for the Atlanta Food Walks Downtown Southern Food Walk. Now if you want the complete details of this food tour then read this entire entry but if you want a quick answer as to whether or not to take this tour then the answer it …Yes….take this tour!

My wife and I are fans of all types of tours, ghost, history, food, etc. so living so close to Atlanta we knew we would eventually try one of the tours offered there. We have discovered that food tours are the ideal way to get a taste of as much local foods as possible, in the shortest amount of time. Great if you are on a short trip to most cities, or if you want to get a rapid orientation and introduction to local cuisine quickly.

We had a free weekend and decided to try the Atlanta Food Walks ‘Downtown Southern Food Walk’. Now I was raised in South Carolina and had two grandmothers who were born at the beginning of the 20th century so I have known true southern food all my childhood and young adult life. My wife, on the other hand, was from Pennsylvania and her only exposure to southern food had been through my family so we were excited to see what these restaurants had to offer to one born and raised southerner and one imported new southerner. So we picked the Sunday walk to avoid Atlanta traffic and off we went!

We were to meet our tour guide at our first tasting location, Paschal’s. Just a word of awareness if you are driving. The site says to park in the lot across from Paschal’s but when you get there you will see that the lot has a business name on the gate with a warning not to park. It concerned us but this was the correct area to park in as you went on your walking tour.

We met our guide, Jamie in front of Paschal’s. She was very friendly and made us feel welcome right away. She checked us in and we went over to meet some of the others in our group. As soon as the last guest checked in, Jamie, who is loaded with historical information, started the tour and led off with the story of how MLK Jr’s dad started out in college near where we were eating. It was an interesting story and a great way to get us rolling.

Our first stop was at our starting place. Paschal’s is located in the heart of the historic Castleberry Hill neighborhood you will find place complete with a rich history from six decades. Paschal’s is known for its exceptional Southern Cuisine, upscale atmosphere, and a retro style that gives customers the perfect southern hospitality experience. We were taken upstairs and seated at a long table where we were served a fried chicken leg, candied yams and a small bowl of grits. Yes, I would consider these items to be southern food. The fried chicken had great seasoning and a really crispy, light crust. It was done very well! The yams are pretty easy to make and not a favorite of mine but my wife likes them. They were what I expected from yams. Now grits are something I take personal. I have eaten grits as long as I can remember and I have had bad ones as well as great ones over the years. These were supposed to be ‘Cheesy Grits’ but were just plain cold grits with some shredded cheddar cheese sprinkled on top and just bad!. A true southern food restaurant should never serve cold grits and especially never ones that had no salt. All they have to do is to add a little chicken broth in the boiling water with some salt and pepper then add the grits. As they firm up, add some cream and cheese and then you have southern cheesy grits. It’s not hard to do and these people who visit from up north won’t leave thinking grits are horrible because I saw the faces of some of our group and you could tell they did not like them. Overall, I would consider returning the Paschal’s again. The people there were very friendly and welcoming and it is a really interesting building.

Now they tell you up front on the website that this food tour takes you off-the-beaten path to Atlanta's historic downtown neighborhoods and off-the-beaten path is where we went as we were off to our next stop. Along the way Jamie entertained with stories and insights into the Civil Rights Movement, Atlanta yesterday and today, and the city’s food culture. Fair warning, you will be walking through some depressed areas of Atlanta and you will see the homeless and those less fortunate out and about but our group was never approached by anyone during our entire walk. I felt totally at ease the entire day.

Our next stop was ‘The Smoke Ring’ which is also in the eclectic Castleberry Hill neighborhood. It is a short walk from many downtown attractions, such as CNN Center, State Farm Arena, Centennial Olympic Park, and the Mercedes Benz Stadium. This place offers authentic creations of Georgia-style barbecue with a unique twist on typical barbecue dishes along with a seasonally driven menu. While we were there they served us a cocktail that was very refreshing. I think it was made with a strawberry moonshine and lemonade. Very tasty! They also gave us a tasting of their Brunswick Stew which I have had in many different places and you never get the same stew twice. This one had great flavor and lots of veggies. The Mac-n-Cheese was creamy and they used shells which I think work better than elbows. Very nice taste as well. The pulled pork and the smoked pork belly were well prepared as well. Most people have never had pork belly but it is from the same area of the pig where bacon comes from so enjoy….its bacon! They also offered three different styles of BBQ sauces. They did not have the Carolina Mustard base one which made me a bit sad! They also served some collard greens. They are not currently in season so I am not sure where these came from. They had been cooked down to be tender but still had a bite of bitterness. Needed some extra sugar as they tenderize then they would be perfect. Overall, I liked this place best during the tour. The building itself was clean and the staff were all very friendly and welcoming. I would definitely return for a full meal here and I recommend that you get that Carolina Mustard Barbecue Sauce then you will be complete on your sauce selections!!

We left ‘The Smoke Ring’ and headed out on a long walk as we headed to ‘Arden’s Garden’. ‘Arden’s Garden’ is Atlanta’s premier fresh juice manufacturer. Their juices are available at supermarkets such as Whole Foods, Publix and Kroger. It’s also available at coffee and bagel shops, health food stores, restaurants, and health clubs. They believe that making juice from a wide variety of fruits and vegetables maximizes a person’s health. They provided two different juices for us to try and they were both had a great taste. The flavor from the fruits and ginger were very pronounced instead of being overwhelmed by one fruit. They also gave us a sample of kale chips. My wife thought they were great and she said she would buy them if she came across them in the store. I would purchase the juices as well. We enjoyed our stop here and it would be well worth a stop if you are near one of their locations.

We headed out for our last stop, ‘The Municipal Market’, also known as the ‘Sweet Auburn Curb Market’. The market was founded in 1918 as an open air market, The Municipal Market opened the doors to its new building in 1924. Referred to as the ‘Curb Market’ by locals, it houses thirty local businesses, including produce, butchers, seafood, a full service bakery, a cooking school, and ten of the most popular eateries in the city. We were here to visit several of the venders inside the market. Our first stop was at ‘Grindhouse Killer Burgers’. They served us a burger that had pimento cheese with a fried green tomato. The beef itself had great flavor and texture. I could have enjoyed it as a plain burger. The pimento cheese was probably not homemade since it was thin and lacked shredded cheddar cheese and did not have that try pimento cheese taste. The fried green tomato was prepared well and had good texture. Not mushy like some I have had. I would like to return and try a different burger if in the area.

We then went across the market to ‘Just Add Honey Tea Company’. This place has been around since 2006 and it’s a place where the owner, Brandi Shelton {AKA 'the tea lady'} has blended what she feels is right and tastes good. Plain and simple with a lot of love. They had prepared for us a blend of tea with peaches that had a great flavor. We walked around in her shop and I observed teas of all different blends and flavors and I am sure there would be a blend in there just about for everyone. Great place with a very friendly staff and owner. Come by and check it out.

Our next stop was right around the corner at the ‘Metro Deli Soul Food’. This place has been operating, as a restaurant, in the Market since 2004. Owners, Mimi and Freselam came from Ethiopia in the nineties and worked hard to learn the language, culture, the food and, the food industry. The staff were all very friendly and served us a taste of West African beans which I think was very close to good ole pinto beans with ham. I think they may have added kidney beans for contrast. It had great flavor but some of the beans were undone and could have cooked a bit longer to soften. They also had fresh made hoe cakes which are essentially cornbread cooked like a pancake. Cornbread goes well with pinto beans so they were right on with the combination. To finish it off, they served an old fashion ‘Banana Pudding’. Now for those of you are used to having that banana pudding made from box vanilla pudding then you have never had the real thing. A true southern banana pudding is one that is baked…yes baked and served hot out of the oven for the best taste ever. My grandmother was an expert at making them and this one, although not quite as good, was pretty darn close. If it had been hot out of the oven it may have been perfect. I would like to come back and try this place again and recommend it for everyone.

Our last stop was actually right across for ‘Just Add Honey’. The sweetest place was the last place! ‘Miss D’s New Orleans Pralines’ was just the ticket for the end of a long walk and lots of food. This place currently sells pralines in nine different flavors including coconut, almond, walnut, pecan and several other flavors. They carry many classical snacks such as trail mix, candy apples, praline apples, caramels and the Triple Flavor World Famous Popcorn (caramel, butter and cheddar flavor). Another interesting menu item are the pratzels, which are praline-covered pretzels. They sell products regularly to 166 different businesses in Atlanta, such as to vendors and at restaurants. They will also bake and delivers cakes to any ordering parties. They had for us a sample of the Triple Flavor World Famous Popcorn. Now I have had that other famous popcorn from Chicago, and it is good, but this one is so much better. Better and more pronounced flavors make this popcorn flavor really make your taste buds sing. They also gave us a taste of pralines and their coated pecans. Both were awesome. While we were enjoying the treats, Miss D herself came out and shared her story with us. She is a moving speaker and I could see her on the motivational speakers list at any time. Her friendly, outgoing personality draws people in and she speaks like she is talking just to you. She was great and her products are wonderful. You can come by or order online. It would be best to come by and maybe….just maybe you will get to meet Miss D herself. That would be the real treat!

Well that ended our tour. Now if you read the website you will note that you will not end where you started. Several if our group used Uber and some took the trolley but my wife and I walked back with our guide, Jamie, and we had just as much fun on the walk back as we did on the tour. We enjoyed her company and we hope to do another tour with this company soon. We encourage everyone to take this tour. Please understand that anything I stated concerning how food was prepared or tasted is strictly my opinion. I am getting older and I tend to be somewhat opinionated these days. But I do encourage you to come and try these places yourself. You may not taste what I tasted…you will only know it you come on out!

We live just south of Atlanta and decided to meet friends (also semi-local) for this tour and we were not disappointed. Jamie was a great & knowledgeable tour guide that made the day a success with her knowledge of Atlanta history. The walk was a leisurely 2 mile distance thru some interesting parts of town that ended near the King Center.

It's always nice to hear our 'locals' come on my tour and end up liking it and learning things they never knew. Jamie is a great guide and enjoys sharing the little lesser known historical facts with folks. Thank you for coming on my tour and posting your review. Hope to see you again.
