One bus took 2 tours in one trip. They dropped one tour in one plantation, and then take us to the destination, Oak Alley Plantation. We spent about 2 hours there. We follow the tour guide of the Big House to visit the house. And then, walking around, or we could seat down to know some stores about the slaves who worked and lived here before. Actually, the general admission to the oak alley plantation was about $27 (12/2021) including the Big House tour.

Our guide Kindrell made our tour very enjoyable. Kin gave us so much background and history on the way to the plantation. He was humorous and knowledgeable and he narrates while handling the bus expertly and safely. The plantation at Oak Alley was beautiful but we felt the tour of the house was overcrowded and we didn’t get to see enough. The talk at the slave quarters was good. Skip the Mint Julep- cheap bourbon and no mint. I’d give the plantation 3.75 or 4 stars but our guide Kindrell 5 plus!

Our driver and guide Kindrell was absolutely fantastic - he made the entire drive to the plantation so good. His humour and knowledge were second to none.
The Plantation tour itself was very interesting and very well organised - even the cafe was reasonably priced.
All in all a great day out and 100% recommend.

The actual tour was pretty good. The guide, Shannon, was very informative about the history of the house and the family who owned it. However, the tour of the house was very crowded and I felt like there was more information about the house and family that I wanted to know. I would’ve liked to have quiet time in each room we toured to just absorb the feel of the history. The slave cabins were very authentic, but felt very sterile. I was very unhappy that all the facilities were not open, and the restaurant was very small and not open when we visited. The bar was also closed that day. Grayline was the tour company we booked with and I do not feel the price was worth it. They are short staffed and we had to make a drop off an another plantation before we got to Oak Alley. Our group was too big to enjoy the atmosphere at Oak Alley.

The property is beautiful and very well-maintained. It's definitely worth visiting. The actual house tour was less than we expected for the price we paid. Admission to the property with the tour is only $28 per person, but this tour is considerably more. We love visiting historic sites and have been on numerous tours, but this tour guide was a little dry and sounded too scripted. The bus portion of the trip was the most uncomfortable part. The temperature in the bus was like a refrigerator. All of the passengers had their vents closed and it was still freezing. The driver played videos which we enjoyed, rather than having to listen to him try to fill an hour of travel time. He did provide information about plantations along the river road. When we arrived, we expected to be given our tickets and sent on our way, but instead received an unnecessary overview while standing in front of the map of the plantation where we were all encouraged to take copies of the same map. This was time we could have used to wander around the site. We couldn't leave before he finished, because he didn't give out the tour tickets until he said his piece.

The grounds were great and served as a nice memorial to the slaves that built and ran the property. However the house tour was a bit underwhelming. I've seen some incredible homes in Louisiana refurbished to their former astetic. I was excited to see this one as it was the largest home I've seen. You don't get a tour of the whole house (the third floor is completely blocked off) and you have serious restrictions on which rooms you can enter. The refurbishing effort by the current owners could be improved. The old spiral staircase was removed and replaced with a straight one by a former owner, why don't they rebuild the spiral staircase? I'm sure it would add so much the experience.
I'd really like to come back if further work is done on the house and more of the rooms are opened up. Some aspects were great, such as the beautiful views on the second floor balcony.
If you're looking for a great home to tour I highly recommend the Gallier home in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

First let me say Oak Alley Plantation was wonderful. Learned when we got there the admission to the plantation was only $25! So that means the bus ride is $44 per person. Before taking off on the bus ride one person in our party of 6 went to the driver to let him know the A/C wasn’t working. His exact words were “it is what it is, it will get better when we start moving”. It was 78 outside and the meeting time was noon. The full bus was getting very hot quickly. The 70 minutes there were bad but not nearly as bad as coming back. It was miserable with just a slight “sorry it’s hot, we didn’t check the A/C on the bus before we left today”. The 2nd line of the inclusions on this tour is a vehicle with A/C. So we as a group paid $264 to ride 2 hours sweating miserably. It did not make for a good trip, kinda ruined it. Then let’s talk about the 2 hours allotted there... it was not busy but the time we had to wait in line to tour the Big House left us with only 15 mins to walk the remainder of the plantation. Suggestion- check for A/C if that is a selling point for your tour and give people enough time to actually get their money’s worth touring the plantation. Oh and if you can’t provide A/C offer a partial refund and maybe check into the A/C if someone brings it up before you embark on a 2 hour trip.

Great Experience and learned a lot of history about plantations from the staff at Oak Alley Plantation. The tour guide there was very knowledgeable and answered questions quickly. Visited the gift shop and grabbed a sandwich and drink. All priced very affordable. Seating is very limited inside the gift shop for eating. So we had to eat outside. I would suggest to post signs reminding customers that indoor seating is limited. So to please eat so others can eat inside if so choose to do so.

Great trip. Our bus driver/ guide ken/kin (not sure of the spelling) was amazing. He was funny and knowledgeable. The oak alley tour was both self-guided (outside) and guided (in the main house) which was perfect. The only downside is you can't take photos inside. The views are AMAZING. The weather in April is also perfect, not hot or cold. We would go back again!

The plantation was beautiful. The oaks are majestic and are the highlight of the tour! The big house tour left a lot to be desired. Perhaps our tour guide (Oak Alley) was new, but didn’t thoroughly answer questions and could have pointed out so many more “traditions” and furniture designs than she did. I’ve learned more from other tours. The self guided grounds tour was just okay. I think the re-created enslaved quarters are much nicer than the original living conditions. There was no “tour guide” on the bus (apparently due to low employment / help wanted signs everywhere) so the driver did his best with pointing out in town sites and then played a film that taught about plantation preservation and building techniques. I’m glad I went on this tour, but would not repeat or recommend since there are so many other things to do in New Orleans

Can you buy lunch at the Oak Alley Plantation?
Naresh
Allen, TX3 contributions
Yes. There is a quaint, little restaurant on the Plantation. We had lunch there. I would recommend brisket if you are hungry and for dessert the bread pudding and the Praline cheesecake are both excellent choices.
Cheers!!
Is the transportation to and from Oak Alley ?

Yes. There are large air-conditioned tour buses that pick up at a central location near the Waterfront and drive you to the plantation and return you to the same location.

I did not see any storage areas when we recently visited the Oak Alley plantation. On the other hand, I’d recommend staying about 15 minutes to admire the oaks and then go to the Houmas Plantation which has much more to see and a better tour. Safe travels!
