Hurricane Katrina Tour of New Orleans
From US$51.00
Overview
Discover the resiliency of New Orleans on a 3.5‐hour bus tour of the city’s most heavily‐impacted sites of Hurricane Katrina. With a knowledgeable local guide, visit districts in various stages of regeneration from Lakeview and St. Bernard to the still decimated Ninth Ward. Along the way, see the Hurricane Katrina Memorial, pass locations of the most catastrophic levee breaches and learn about the critical levee system in post‐Katrina New Orleans.
What to Expect
Your historic tour of post‐Katrina New Orleans begins in the afternoon with pickup in the French Quarter. Climb aboard your air‐conditioned coach and take in some foundational history from your guide as you wind through the city.

Heading east from the French Quarter, you’ll pass by the Ninth Ward, a heavily impacted district surrounded on three sides by waterways. Experience the vulnerability of this place – located at the site of massive Industrial Canal breach – and its burgeoning regeneration. Though this area is closed to tour groups, you’ll glimpse several important celebrity‐driven rebuilding projects including Make It Right houses, spurred but Brad Pitt, and Musician’s Village, hosted by Habitat for Humanity, Branford Marsalis and Harry Connick, Jr. Keep an eye out for the restored home of local legend, Fats Domino.

Further north, you’ll pass through Lakeview, Gentilly and St Bernard, three badly hit areas in the process of regrowth. En route, see high water marks and memorials at the two other major levee breach sites – 17th Street Canal in Lakeview and the London Avenue Canal in Gentilly. Hear your guide’s eyewitness account of the days surrounding the cataclysmic storm – one of the worst in US history – and learn how, years later, the region’s natural and industrial surroundings continue to be impacted, from disappearing wetlands to oil and gas pipeline disruption.

You will visit the New Basin Canal Lighthouse which was destroyed by Katrina but reconstructed and reopened in 2013. Your guided tour of this museum offers a bird’s eye view of the area, including the levees along the lakefront and, in the distance, the longest bridge over water in the world, the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.

The final leg of your tour passes by the Hurricane Katrina Memorial en route to the beautiful New Orleans City Park. Stop and pay tribute to the 1,100 people who died in the hurricane, then take in the lush beauty of this nationally recognized park. Learn a bit of its history as the former Louis Allard plantation and the effect of the London Avenue Canal Breach on the space.

Your 3.5‐hour tour ends back at the starting point in the French Quarter.

Learning about Hurricane Katrina from people who lived through it

We were on the Katrina tour with Bruce Nolan as our guide and George as our bus driver. We learned so much from Bruce. Both of them have lived through Katrina and gave us insights that only those who've really experienced it could give. Bruce...More

Peggy led our tour -- she was full of information and personal stories, and she really brought to life all the factors that led to this awful disaster, and how the city pulled together to recover. I learned so much. And she made it interesting...More

Beyond pictures!

Enjoyed every moment of the tour. Peggy was more than excellent. It goes beyond pictures and the city itself, it's about people that had to live through this tragedy. It's a must see.

Informative

Very interesting to learn more about the storm and challenges of the community. Sad to see land cleared where once a family lived, but they had to walk away. Made a donation to the Musicians’ Village because it's a wonderful program.

Very Informative

The Hurricane Katrina tour with Bruce Nolan was really good. He’s extremely knowledgeable on the subject because he lived through it as a resident and a newspaper reporter. Do the tour and you will learn so much about the city of New Orleans as well.

Thank Thomas M

I wouldn't think that would be a problem. You do need to go to the ticket office near the buses to exchange the voucher for a printed bus pass.
