About
Explore the Dalton Highway over the White Mountains, across the Yukon River, and up to the Arctic Circle on this 12-hour (sometimes longer due to stops for extra photo opportunities) tour outside of Fairbanks. Join a small group of no more than 8 passengers on a fully-narrated, guided tour through dramatic landscapes of the Dalton Highway, and far-off snow-capped peaks of the Brookes Range. Search for wildlife and learn more about Northern Alaska from a knowledgeable guide. Stops at the Yukon River, Finger mountain, photo opportunities, and bathroom breaks. If you do not see a tour available for a particular day then call the host (SkyFire In Focus Tours) and check if something can be arranged for you and your party. Remember we need three guests to conduct a valid tour and should your tour not meet the minimum you will be notified via the host. A private tour can be secured should you consider covering the cost of the third seat.

What to expect
  • As you head north of Fairbanks and across the famous Dalton Highway, the heart of America's largest state becomes a wild land of untamed wilderness and wide open spaces. Comprising river valleys with moose, caribou, and other wildlife, the distant mountains of snow capped granite, the far north is a harsh land with dark, frozen winters and summers full of constant golden sunshine. It is a land of contrast, most accessible and safely visited during a specific, established window each year. Your visit to this quiet wilderness starts at 9 am during the spring and early summer and at 12 noon late in August. After being picked up from your Fairbanks-area hotel or vacation rental, you will meet your driver/guide for the day who will introduce his or herself to you and the rest of the group before leaving the town for your 12 hour trip. Your 15 passenger van may have up to 8 others on the trip, ensuring lots of space and personal attention as you head north beyond the interior.  Over the course of your day, you will pass by the White Mountains and over the Yukon River, passing natural barriers that separate the interior from the pristine boreal forest and wild back country that comprise the majority of the state. You will stop at notable landmarks for photos and further exploration as your guide teaches you the history of the road and the state and you search for the abundant wildlife native to the area. Although snacks and water will be provided, you will need to bring a sack lunch to compliment the items provided by your host. During August, the trip will run later in an effort to capture views of the Northern Lights, returning you three hours later than the normal drop off time of 9:00 pm to downtown Fairbanks for a your complimentary evening drop off back at your hotel or vacation rental.

Fun drive but too much car time and insufficient outdoor time.
Aug 2021 • Friends
Bill is a fun guide. Broke the ice to get the group bonded with fun questions. Would have liked more stops to check out vegetation and take pictures of plants and flowers. Would have also liked to maybe do some short walks or wait a bit at water bodies to at least seem like we were waiting for animals😁. The weather wasn’t cooperative with the Aurora and we didn’t see a single animal but was a fun trip nevertheless

Aug 2021 • Family
Mr. Bill is a highly capable and knowledgeable host, who maintains a sense of fun throughout the day. Our group also happened to get along extremely well and new friendships were forged. We were concerned that our 15-year old son might get bored, but he sat in the co-pilot seat and stayed engaged the whole day. Our family has been north of the Arctic Circle before, but not in Alaska, so that was a particular thrill. On the day of our tour it was raining and misty, but the scenery was still gorgeous and 12 hours just flew by. Just be sure to wear sturdy shoes that can handle a little mud.

A Personal Guide to the Arctic Circle
Aug 2021
Mr. Bill provided a very personalized journey into central Alaska and to the Arctic Circle. The Dalton Highway follows the route of the Alaska Pipeline, and Bill's past work for the pipeline provided fascinating insight into this huge construction project. His knowledge of wildlife, climate, and local lore added to the trip. Plus, our group had only 6 people, in contrast to the large groups in buses.

Bucket List MUST DO
May 2021 • Family
This tour does not disappoint! While the anticipation of reaching the Arctic Circle and seeing all the breathtaking scenery is expected, the 'hidden gem' is your tour guide Mr. Bill. He has spent over 20 years working and traveling this area and is knowledgeable for any and all questions. He is prepared for his guests by way of comfort, safety and entertainment. He was engaging, interactive and the 12 hours flew by.

Thanks Skyfire in Focus and Mr Bill for an awesome experience and creating a family memory that we will reminisce about for years to come

Left Fairbanks at 9am and got back at 730pm. Had an amazing time with Bill the tour guide. Never a dull moment the entire 10ish hours. We didn’t see too much wildlife but that’s up to the animals. Weather on the route is pretty unpredictable so it was also a little rainy and cloudy in parts but even still some of the views were breathtaking. If you want a personable tour guide who’s very knowledgeable about all things Dalton Highway and Alaska, Bill’s your guy!

This review is going to be a bit different from others because thanks to COVID our Alaska itinerary had to be modified, and sadly we are unable to make it to Fairbanks. I had booked this tour last year when our trip planning was in the initial stages based on the excellent reviews. When we were forced to delete the Fairbanks portion I communicated that with Mr. Bill. As you can imagine, this small, independent business is totally dependent on tourists, and clearly he took a big financial hit this year. Despite that fact he refunded our money in full, so I want anyone who reads this to know that you are supporting a small business with an owner who is responsive to communications and is HONEST! Based on reviews he provides an exceptional experience, so you can book with confidence. Should we ever be able to return to Alaska (and based on our trip so far, I wish I lived here!) I would definitely start in Fairbanks and book with Mr. Bill again.

beyond expectations, an affecting experience
Aug 2020 • Family
This trip to the arctic circle was a boyhood dream, sparked by pictures of strange trees in an alien setting from our world book encyclopedia. ....decades ago. There's a romance with all the history of the gold rush, crossing the Yukon and reaching the arctic circle. We even got to see the brooks range off in the distance...one of the most wildest, uninhabited places on this planet. But Bill eclipsed all of that, even as rich and rewarding as all those things panned out to be. He develops a relationship by just comfortable conversation. He is interested in people. He has a drive and talent for motivating people to talk about things they care about without making anyone feel that they necessarily have to contribute to any conversation. This tour was not northern lights; too early for that...but that didn't matter. I learned a lot about Central Alaska on this 12 hour journey. So ya see, it's not just riding all day just to be able to brag you made it to the circle.

Awesome!
Love the trip to the Arctic Circle! It was a once in a lifetime experience, very scenic and photogenic, took a lot of pictures. The trip to the Arctic Circle was long but didn’t realize the time because Mr. Bill was such an awesome guide and host. He was very personable and by the end of the trip, we got to know him and felt like family. With him being a professional photographer is an added bonus. He gave us a certificate and souvenir photos. If considering a trip to the Arctic Circle, I highly recommend to book with Mr. Bill! You will not be disappointed. We plan to use him again to take nice photos of the Aurora Borealis.
