- IHBFan0 contributionsGREAT tour for people of all abilitiesGreat trip. Guide ensured it was workable for guests of all capabilities. Commentary was knowledgeable and informative. MK was an excellent, kind and capable guide. She has a great sense of humor and ensures all guests enjoy the trip. She provided walking poles, snacks and water. She was an excellent driver as we navigated the Blue Ridge Parkway and off road paths to reach beautiful waterfalls. She gave us insights into Appalachian flora and fauna along with history. Everyone had a lovely time. We're sending prayers and positive thoughts to the company, MK and her fellow employees and all of Western NC after Helene. We can't wait to come back when we are able to.Written October 4, 2024
- allysoncb0 contributionsFantastic way to spend the day in Asheville! This is a must do for anyone visiting the Asheville area! Our guide, Niko (and Carmen!) grew up in the area and was an never ending source of knowledge when it came to the history of the mountains, flora, fauna and especially the funghi! The hiking was fairly easy. The waterfalls were breathtaking! Would take the tour again!Written September 29, 2024
- Z8523EGkristeng0 contributionsBest part of our trip to AshevilleIf you’re looking for a guide who knows the mountains and forests of North Carolina like the back of his hand and truly loves sharing his wealth of knowledge, I can’t recommend Niko Faherty highly enough. My boyfriend and I did a private custom hike and told him we wanted to learn about the history, botany, and animals of the area and hike a trail with some high mountain views. Niko drove us toward the Art Loeb trail, making lots of stops along the way to show us incredible mountain laurel groves, butterfly meadows, some of the only living American Chestnut trees still living in the wild, veins of shining white local quartz, a fascinating diversity of mushrooms, and even some tiny baby newts darting beneath leaves. He genuinely loves sharing what he knows (which is a lot) and his enthusiasm for this glowing ecological jewel is contagious. We finally reached the Black Balsam entrance to the Art Loeb, where Niko led us straight to some of the most delicious blackberries I’ve ever had and the most beautiful hike I’ve ever taken. The guy knows what he’s doing. As we enjoyed marching up a well-maintained trail and sparkling outcrops of quarts and sedimentary rock, we rounded the corner and found Saxsquatch playing Careless Whispers (see photo). Only in North Carolina, right? I won’t say more about the Art Loeb trail here because the photos speak for themselves: spectacular, don’t miss it. Niko spent extra time with us and made extra stops to share interesting trees and other plant life, so we were behind schedule on our way back to Asheville. Nonetheless, he pulled over again to show us a secret treasure trove of ripe blueberries hiding quietly in an enchanted stand of spruce trees. This was a perfect day. Niko made it a real joy and learned and saw so much more than we would have on our own. As soon as we can get back to Asheville, we’re booking another private hike with him. I haven’t taken a trip with any of the other guides, but outfitters and other expert hikers and guides in the area only had good things to say about Asheville Hiking Tours. Thank you!Written August 22, 2024
- Eiohara0 contributionsSpectacular Hiking Tour in Pisgah National Forest! While on a weekend visit to Asheville my husband and I did the half day hiking tour with our amazing guide Chaney Swiney. He was friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about geography and the beautiful Pisgah National Forest. The tour, which was about six hours from beginning to end, was well planned and thought out. We drove about 30 minutes to a first spot for a short hike and an overlook. We drove an additional 30 minutes further and took a longer, more challenging hike to an incredible waterfall. After a snack and rest, we hiked back to the van and drove a little further to another waterfall. This hike was a little shorter and not as challenging but not easy. This waterfall was also beautiful. Both spots were off the beaten path and in a relatively crowded park, Chaney brought us to two spectacular spots that were somewhat secluded with no one else there. Have a hearty meal, dress in layers, bring sunscreen and plenty of water. Take the walking stick that is offered - it was a game changer! Hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers are a must. Bathroom breaks are offered along the way. We would happily pay more to have a more upgraded mode of transportation- the bus was a tight fit without great AC. Overall we highly recommend Chaney and the Blue Ridge Parkway and Hiking Tour.Written August 5, 2024
- Guide328950435330 contributionsFun day in the mountainsBeautiful drive along the Blue Ridge parkway and hikes up to a peak and 2 fantastic waterfalls. The weather was perfect and the view was amazing. Our guide, MK, was super knowledgeable about the area, the wildlife and the foliage. She was friendly and funny and made the day really fun. I would recommend this trip to anyone who loves to hike moderate terrain and learn about nature. I would also recommend MK as a guide. She was fantastic . We will be back!Written August 3, 2024
- Compass000807639900 contributionsWaterfalls and SunshineWe had an overall great experience. Our guide called us a few days before to ask if we had hiked or been to the waterfalls in Asheville and to check if we had any specific requests for our hike. He picked us up at the hotel and was super friendly and gave us a lot of great information about the forest and the history of the area. We went to some out of the way places that were beautiful. Would do this again.Written June 15, 2024
- 744lawrencer0 contributionsGreat Time with IanThere were just three of us, plus the guide, Ian. Ian had a tremendous amount of knowledge regarding the area's plants, animals, birds, history, etc., and he was an excellent guide. The drive through the Blue Ridge Parkway was beautiful, and we were able to make stops along the way for taking pics and just looking at the beauty of the area. The waterfalls were beautiful; I just wish there were more of them! Definitely worth the cost to have a guide to drive you there and provide so much information during the trip.Written June 10, 2024

Greg's knowledge was second to none and there was very little traffic on the location he chose. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and conversation with Greg and would highly recommend this tour! He even took us to a waterfall that we would not have discovered if it had not been for Greg!Written November 1, 2023

- joelchamp760 contributionsIncredible experienceWhat an amazing experience! The hiking tour with Ian as our guide has been the highlight of our Asheville family vacation. We chose to do a private guided tour and it was truly well worth it. Ian answered all of our many questions and took the time to point out not only the different plants and fungi along the route, but also talked about local folklore, animal life and we even happened up 2 snake species, 2 salamanders and 2 incredible waterfalls. We highly recommend this guided tour and request Ian!Written October 11, 2023

She was smart, responsive, and delightful to travel with. I've hiked in this area for decades and she took us to two places I'd never been. Very cool!Written September 25, 2023

We had a great time on our hiking tour and thought it was the perfect way to see the amazing sights in Pisgah Forest! Our guide for our tour was Abby and she was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. She gave us history on the forest itself, information on the plants & wildlife, and always made sure everyone in the group was engaged and having a good time. We saw 3 different waterfalls and stoped along one of the creeks, while hiking roughly 3 miles during the tour. Abby was also nice enough to offer suggestions for restaurants and other attractions around Asheville. Overall it was a great experience and I would recommend to anyone looking to see the sights the forest has to offer without worrying about getting lost or not getting added information along the way!

The best decision we made this trip! Paul, our trail guide was excellent with our group. He was equally as entertaining and captivating to us adults as well as to our 13 year old and 10 year old. Our kids were engaged the entire 5 hour tour and learned a bunch. Us adults learned a bunch too! Paul was able to cater to the different interests of the entire group and was always great at answering all of our questions. He is excellently knowledgeable on the Appalachian history, local culture, wildlife, and the plants we come across throughout the tour. We had a great time and enjoyed the entire experience.
I highly recommend Paul for your tour.

We had an amazing time exploring the trails and waterfalls in the Pisgah Forest with our guide Paul. It was our first time in Asheville and first time hiking in general so we wanted to make sure we had a guide. The weather was just chilly enough to enjoy the day while hiking through nature. Paul was awesome and he really made this experience special. His passion, knowledge, and background in forestry and biology shine through and we learned a lot about the area. On top of that Paul is just an overall nice guy (super friendly and helpful).
I definitely recommend this tour, whether just for fun or to learn more about nature and the area. On our next visit we would like to try the full day tour. Just a note, just like the rest of the world the company has had to adjust the tour because of COVID by not including transportation (now you follow guide in park in your own car). We didn’t mind at all and it was comfortable for us. But just a heads up! Have an open mind and have fun!

Excellent experience visiting and hiking the waterfalls. Having a tour guide to teach about nature and take you to beautiful places is worth every cent. Exactly what we wanted: a half-day in the mountains, enjoying fall color and seeing waterfalls. PLUS exactly what we didn’t know we wanted: a smart, fun and very knowledgeable guide, who had so many stories about the mountains, flora and fauna. We got a mini-education on medicinal plants, snakes and rock formations. He was really great. We could tell he loves his job and he talks very highly of his employer. I’m certain all the guides are equally accomplished.

This tour was outstanding! We were lucky to have Paul as our guide - he was super smart, funny, considerate and such a genuinely nice person (forgive him for some of his dad jokes!). He shared lots of really interesting information about wildlife, flowers/trees and the local area. He was very patient not only with all of the groups questions but also listening to my husband who was his co-pilot for the day! The tour really is brilliant and Paul is an excellent guide who genuinely cares about the environment (put out a fire someone else left lit!) as well as keen to share his knowledge so that we're all that better informed for future!

The drive to the meeting point was about 45 min from downtown Asheville. Make sure you eat a good breakfast before your hike. It is a very popular route with many visitors. If there is an opportunity for the tour group to drive the van vs everyone driving their own vehicle....take it! It gets very congested on the side of the road with all the folks trying to enjoy natures beauty. The reason for the early start is because the destination is popular with people arriving mid to late morning. As far as snacks go, there was no designated time to sit an eat snacks. I tried to fit them in between stopping points. If you get car sick or nauseous zipping down the from the 4710 elevation levels bring some peppermint candy or peppermint essential oils to dab under your nose. Depending on the time of year you venture on your hike, layering clothes is always better than not enough.

Excellent experience with Eli! Can't thank Eli enough for giving us a wonderful tour! She was so knowledgeable of the area and knocked herself out giving us a great tour. She kept us moving, told the story of the area with just enough amount of detail and so much enthusiasm that we didn't even mind the rain. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, Eli for giving us such an enjoyable and memorable morning!

Our family had a wonderful afternoon hike with outstanding Expert Naturalist, Paul. Paul was great and, wow, does he know about basically everything we saw, from butterflies, to mushrooms, to edible plants, to the tiny creatures living in the waterfalls. We tried to soak up as much as we could learn, and we barely scratched the surface. The surroundings we breathtaking, the hike was very enjoyable, and fairly easy to manage even for kids. Thanks for the terrific introduction to the beauty of this area!

From start to finish, our hike with Asheville Hiking Tours was wonderful and exceeded our expectations. Ginny, the owner, called me back on a Sunday to discuss the best option for our group of three, which ranged in fitness level. She recommended the easy level (as opposed to moderate) for the Waterfalls and Blue Ridge Parkway Tour because if other people joined the group the following Sunday, there would be no expectations, and no one would feel like they were being held back. As it turned out, a nice couple joined our group, and we really enjoyed their company as we took our time in nature.
MK (Mary Kait), a local professional naturalist educator with years of experience, led our Sunday morning expedition. She took care of everything including driving the very comfortable van dubbed “Dolly” after Dolly Parton, making sure we had bathroom breaks (in facilities with flush toilets), and even provided snacks. She is very knowledgeable, friendly, and patient and made everyone feel at ease. We enjoyed views on the Blue Ridge Parkway and hiked to two waterfalls in Pisgah National Forest. As we walked, MK pointed out a variety of interesting plants and wildlife and even some edible plants including wintergreen and blackberries, which we tasted. MK encouraged us as budding naturalists and delighted in our finds. MK is an enthusiastic ambassador for nature and the Asheville area and even recommended her favorite local restaurants.
I have nothing but nice things to say about Asheville Hiking Tours and highly recommend them. In addition to easy and moderate level hikes for public groups, they also have private tours, which they will tailor to individual interests and fitness levels. Their website is very informative, and all information on the website turned out to be accurate, including detailed directions to their place of business and to the free parking close by. Asheville Hiking Tours seeks to please with excellent customer service, and they deliver!

How treacherous is the terrain? My husband and I have never hiked before. We are in our 60's but in very good health.
Written August 7, 2023
Mostly an easy flat walk. There is a waterfall that you can see from the road, but the best view is down a few flights of steps. Also our guide chose to go on a short but challenging trail that I found to be slightly challenging. But I think that was a last minute decision on her part. My sense is that they can customize the hike depending on the group.

Yes there were later tours available. When we were there a year ago sliding rock was closed (temporarily?) due to storm damage.

We are looking to join your hike on Saturday, Aug 31st. There will be 2 or 3 or us and just waiting for 1 to make a final decision to join. What is the minimum number of days before a hike to purchase a ticket as I might not have an answer until about 2 weeks before?

We are staying at an AirBnB. I would assume we would need to go to a standard pickup location to start the tour. What time of the day does the tour typically start from one of these locations?
Written July 1, 2019
Approximately 9am. We had 2 couples staying outside of the downtown area. Our driver (driving a company van) had them meet us at an Earth Fare grocery store just outside of downtown. They found us easily and we were touring right at the stroke of 9:01!
