Mike with Asheville Hiking Tours is simply amazing. His personality is down to earth, & a treasure trove of knowledge about Appalachian history & info about trees & natural preservation of precious resources. His background is in forestry so the amount of interesting tidbits he passes on to his tour group are downright fascinating. If you love nature & are drawn to the peak of the fall season I recommend the last couple of weeks of October. The splashy gorgeous colors of the trees were unbelievable. The tour my husband & I were part of a group & we went to Pisgah Forest & were able to enjoy a few waterfalls: Looking Glass Falls, Cove Creek Falls, Catawba Falls, & not sure if it's the official name but Whale Falls. We also drove part of the Blue Ridge Parkway & really felt the experience is so incredibly enriching.

What a great day trip in Piscah National Forest! Our guide, Nick, knew a lot about the plants, animals and geology of the area. He found natural herbs for us to smell. We saw salamanders and butterflies and we heard many different birds. The walks to the waterfalls were easy and the waterfalls were beautiful. Sitting at the base of one having lunch was so enjoyable and relaxing. Then off to drive on the Blue Ridge parkway and look back at views. March is a great time as the trees are not out yet, so you can see far into the woods, but wildflowers have just started.

This tour was outstanding! We were lucky to have Paul as our guide - he was super smart, funny, considerate and such a genuinely nice person (forgive him for some of his dad jokes!). He shared lots of really interesting information about wildlife, flowers/trees and the local area. He was very patient not only with all of the groups questions but also listening to my husband who was his co-pilot for the day! The tour really is brilliant and Paul is an excellent guide who genuinely cares about the environment (put out a fire someone else left lit!) as well as keen to share his knowledge so that we're all that better informed for future!

book it you will not regret it!

My wife and I had an amazing time on the tour with Paul as our tour guide on the waterfall excursion! If you like to hike and see some natural beauty, this is the place to go! I had signed up for the Waterfalls and Blue Ridge Parkway Tour in which was not that difficult in hiking trail. In total, we may have hiked a total of ~3+ miles and it was not that difficult and my wife and I are inexperienced hikers. The hardest part was the second waterfall that went up in elevation slightly.

We had went the first week in February. Paul had said that winter is usually their slow-season because of the cold. Because of the time that we had booked the tour, my wife and I were the only people on the tour; so we had basically a private tour.

The best part of the tour was our guide, Paul! He was so informative and very personable. He knew so much of the history of Pisgah National Forest. He was very helpful to by bringing hiking poles for us which came so much in handy. NOTE: I wouldn't expect to have your guide bring you hiking poles since there could me more people that they may not have enough for everyone. Since we were the only ones on the tour, he was happy to be our "personal" photographer for different part of the hike/tour. He made sure we were ok every step of the way whether it was driving to the different hiking trails, making sure of our well-being during the hike, or even if we wanted to do a little more than the basic parts of the tour.

I would highly recommend this tour to anyone coming to Asheville especially if the other tour guides are anything like Paul.

The tour was even better than the description on this site. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and read the group perfectly. She lead us to each of waterfalls while stopping along the way to show us various plants and pointed out the birds. She was a true pleasure!

My mom and I had the best time. It was raining most of the trip but our guide Paul gave us ponchos and walking sticks. Paul was so informative on everything from the waterfalls to the mushroom he found growing on a branch on the ground. The Blue ridge parkway was not visible due to all of the clouds, so he adjusted the tour and took us to extra waterfalls! When we are two women traveling alone it is important that we feel comfortable with someone we don’t know taking us on our tour. Paul felt more like an old friend than just a guide taking us into his world. He really loves what he does and it really shows! I would 10/10 recommend taking this tour. So much beauty to see. And not enough kind words we can say about our tour guide Paul! Thank you!!

Excellent experience with Eli! Can't thank Eli enough for giving us a wonderful tour! She was so knowledgeable of the area and knocked herself out giving us a great tour. She kept us moving, told the story of the area with just enough amount of detail and so much enthusiasm that we didn't even mind the rain. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, Eli for giving us such an enjoyable and memorable morning!

Our family had a wonderful afternoon hike with outstanding Expert Naturalist, Paul. Paul was great and, wow, does he know about basically everything we saw, from butterflies, to mushrooms, to edible plants, to the tiny creatures living in the waterfalls. We tried to soak up as much as we could learn, and we barely scratched the surface. The surroundings we breathtaking, the hike was very enjoyable, and fairly easy to manage even for kids. Thanks for the terrific introduction to the beauty of this area!

The best decision we made this trip! Paul, our trail guide was excellent with our group. He was equally as entertaining and captivating to us adults as well as to our 13 year old and 10 year old. Our kids were engaged the entire 5 hour tour and learned a bunch. Us adults learned a bunch too! Paul was able to cater to the different interests of the entire group and was always great at answering all of our questions. He is excellently knowledgeable on the Appalachian history, local culture, wildlife, and the plants we come across throughout the tour. We had a great time and enjoyed the entire experience.

I highly recommend Paul for your tour.

We had a great time on our trip with Eli. The weather was pretty bad and we could not see through the fog around the mountains but Eli made up for this by taking us to a bunch of waterfalls and did her absolute best to try and find a good look out spot. She is very knowledgeable about the natural life in the mountains. We would definitely recommend this trip.
