City Tour & Alcatraz Admission
3.5-hr San Francisco city tour plus ferry and admission to Alcatraz island, including award-winning Alcatraz audio tour. Limited availability and advance booking is recommended
Once a federal prison and now a national park, historic Alcatraz sits in the middle of the San Francisco Bay and is a must-see sight. Secure a hard-to-get ticket to the island for an audio-guided walking tour and visit other iconic San Francisco sights including the Golden Gate Bridge, Palace of Fine Arts, and Chinatown on this stress-free tour. All entrance fees are included.
What to Expect
In the morning, make your own way to Pier 33. Your Alcatraz and San Francisco tour starts with a ferry ride to Alcatraz. Upon arrival get a brief orientation on the maximum-security facility from a park ranger and pick up your self-guided audio tour. Listen to commentary from former staff and inmates as you explore the cellblocks.

When your audio tour concludes, hop back on the ferry to Pier 33.

Next, head toward your designated meeting spot on Post Street for a tour of San Francisco. Hop aboard an air-conditioned coach and cruise along the city’s waterfront, taking in views of Alcatraz and the San Francisco Bay on your way to the Golden Gate Bridge (weather permitting).

Spend the morning visiting the historic Palace of Fine Arts, a monumental structure from the 1915 World’s Fair; stop for pictures at the panoramic viewpoint on Twin Peaks; and explore neighborhoods including North Beach, Chinatown, the Presidio, and Fisherman’s Wharf.

Your tour ends back on Post Street.

Underwhelming Tour, Except for Alcatraz

This review is really a tale of 2 experiences. I signed up for the city tour because of good experiences with city tours elsewhere, such as Los Angeles, and because it was the only way we could score tickets to Alcatraz. This tour was disapointing....More

Alcatraz is AMAZING but Gray Line Tour a mixed experience

We booked from the UK before travelling to the US. We really wanted to do Alcatraz and the bus tour sounded useful. Alcatraz Island is a MUST DO activity, absolutely beautiful and atmospheric. See my separate review of the island. The Grey line tour has...More

Compelling Experience

Pros: The audio self guided tour in Alcatraz Island was very good. You do it at your own pace, just note the times to get back on the Ferry. You can immerse yourself in its history when you are inside the prison cell. Our city...More

We were called 2 days before our tour to reschedule one that had been overbooked. Since we were only in town for that one day, we were unable to reschedule. Gray Line was not able to offer us any time slot for Alcatraz on the...More

Dear Andrea, We deeply apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced. It is truly understandable that guests plan in advance to visit the famous Alcatraz Island. Ferry times are limited for Gray Line, which are issued by Alcatraz Cruises. At your earliest conveniences, would you...More

Must See in San Francisco

Alcatraz was the one attraction I wanted to see on our trip to San Francisco. We weren't disappointed. The self guided tour is fabulous. When you travel with others, the jail is completely silent. Such a cool and eerie feeling all at once. My children,...More

False. We had to make our own way to Fisherman's Wharf to collect tickets by 7am from the tour company then walk to the pier from where the ferry departs and exchange those tickets for ferry tickets. After Alcatraz you... More

I believe you can do that, if you have the time available. Gray Line have a daily city tour I gathered. It's the Alcatraz tour that is very specific with your tour time.
