Fun Day Learning About Japanese Food & Culture
Mar 2020
Our guide, Alice K., did a fantastic job of exposing us to the foods and culture of Japantown. She also generously shared the history of Japantown and some of her own family history. The foods we sampled were delicious-- especially the pumpkin latte and the soft matcha ice cream served in a fish-shaped cone! A fun outing! You should go!

Fabulous way to see SF
Feb 2020
I've done two Edible Excursions tours now and they've both been excellent and very different. This is a great way to experience the city and learn about different parts of SF. The team are knowledgeable, personable and professional and all food is delicious! Highly recommend.

Five Tours w/ Edible Excursions - ALL are Fantastic!
Jan 2020
I first found Edible Excursions when looking for a birthday idea for my tough-to-buy-for husband. Our first experience was the North Berkeley Food tour followed the next year by Oakland Temescal Tastes. On both tours the restaurants, guides and storytelling were top notch.
After such positive experiences on the standard tours, I decided to try Custom Events with Edible Excursions to entertain groups of clients. I've now done Oakland Uptown Food & Drinks once and Japantown twice each time hosting somewhere between 10-15 people. In every case, the results are consistently excellent. Lisa (the owner) and her team (both administrative and tour guides) are knowledgeable, entertaining and, quite simply, total pros. I've done a number of food tours in different cities across the US and abroad and Edible Excursions is, hands down, the best. Highly recommend!

Quite enjoyable!
Jan 2020
Alice K. was wonderful. As a Japanese-American, she brought to life the history and stories and realities of the Japanese-American experience. I found it quite educational and thought-provoking. Of course the food was great. There was such good variety and learning about the back story of the places gives you an appreciation that you might otherwise not have. Overall, I recommend the tour and Alice gives it such a special touch. She is very thoughtful.

Japantown Edible Delights
Nov 2019
This was my first Edible Excursions tour and it won’t be my last! My friend and I chose the Taste of Japantown tour to learn more about a community through its food that many local San Franciscans don’t know much about. From the moment we met Alice Kawahatsu, we knew we were in good hands. This is her neighborhood and her knowledge of its history and culture was immediately evident as was her enthusiasm for sharing its traditions and culinary treats. Come hungry – everything was delicious and there was a wide variety of savory and sweets to sample at each destination.

Culture, History, and FOOD all in one!
Apr 2019 • Friends
My husband and I toured Japan Town with Alice and Edible Excursions. We loved it! Alice spoke about Japan Town, the history and culture with such passion, you couldn't help but feel like you were living in history. The food that was hand picked was amazing! The tour is thoughtfully planned, beginning in a quaint cafe with a very special late, building to main courses, and then bites of dessert. Each restaurant was prepared and welcoming of our group.

What a fabulous time!
Our tour guide, Alice, was an absolute gem. A local of the area, she knew so many of the shop and restaurant owners, and made the tour feel like she was just showing off her home town to some friends. The food was superb. In fact, we are making a trip back tonight to get more ramen! My teenage son even had a great time. Highly recommend!

Excellent Japantown Food Tour
Alice Kawahatsu was our guide for this small group (6 people) tour. She is a resident of the area and seemed to know everyone. Her personal connection helped to make this tour an exceptionally enjoyable experience. We went to a number of different venues and not only tasted the food but usually had a chance to talk to the owners. Even stopped at a couple of sites not on the official tour but ones that Alice thought that we might be interested in seeing. I highly recommend this tour.

Our family took a private tour of Japantown with Alice. She was an outstanding guide! We appreciated her personal perspective on the food and area in general. The tea ceremony at Hotel Kabuki was a real treat.

A great way to spend an afternoon for locals and visitors alike!
Feb 2018 • Family
The Japantown food tour - A Taste of Japantown - with Alice Kawahatsu exceeded our expectations! It was a plus that we were lucky enough to have 75 degree weather in SF on the day that we went. Alice was friendly, accommodating, and fun to be with from the moment we met her. As a native San Franciscan of Japanese heritage, she was full of knowledge and information about the history of Japantown, which we found fascinating. We enjoyed discovering new spots in Japantown, some of which I had never visited, even though I used to live in the neighborhood. She was a wealth of knowledge about the food and took the time to explain the preparation process to us and to point out various food items in the local supermarket. She also pointed out some favorite spots that were not on the tour. All of the restaurants that we visited were on point and I look forward to going to each of them again. The sweet potato latte was surprisingly delicious, and the ramen, the frittata, the onigiri and the mochi were all superb. Ending at the beautiful restaurant, Dosa, was a nice touch. Be warned--come very hungry and bring a backpack or shopping bag to take some mochi home with you. All in all, we had an outstanding time and would definitely recommend this tour. Thank you, Alice, for a wonderful afternoon!
