About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Nancy K0 contributionsDream Day on the road to HanaWe would like to thank Charlie, the owner; Bruddah Stanley, the chef; and most importantly “Uncle Louie”, our guide and driver for a full day of fun, fun, fun on the road to Hana. Louie is a character, full of stories, that kept us in stitches, while also being knowledgeable about the flora, fauna, culture, history, and geography of the island. The trip is so well planned. Many stops to break up the time in the van, great views due to the small group, two meals, snacks and water, and responsive to guest requests. We made several quick stops to satisfy urges for coffee, shaved ice, coconut water and ice cream. Did I mention the views? We “wowed” and “whoahed” and “oohed” and “aahed” as if we were viewing a fireworks show! The color of the sand! The water! The flowers! The fruits! The Rainbow Eucalyptus! Swimming in the pool below one of the waterfalls was refreshing and unique. Thanks to Uncle Louie and team for a great day.Written February 5, 2024
- childrenshouse0 contributionsExcellent company!Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make the Road to Hana tour that I had booked for August 9th due to the devastating Maui fires. I tried to reach out to let Mahalo Tours to let them know, but due to no internet or cell service due to downed cell towers, I could not contact them. Not only did they reach out to me, they processed a credit to my credit card even without me asking even though I'd not cancelled within the required time. While I didn't experience their service on the booked trip, I did experience their compassion relative to what was taking place in Lahaina. If I ever return to Maui, I will definitely book with Mahalo Tours. They have exhibited responsiveness, great communication, and proactiveness, all of which are rare these days. They deserve to be applauded. This is the type of service that speaks far louder than savvy marketing. Thank you, Mahalo Tours!!Written August 13, 2023
- 466darcyk0 contributionsOur best drive to Hana and the full loop. I was a professional driver and am so glad to have left the driving to them.Travelshack Mahalo Tours for Road to Hana Tour After doing the drive myself to Hana three times over the years we thought taking a tour would be a nice change and go the full loop. We were right, very right. Our driver Rudy arrived on time to pick us up at our condo. He was friendly, funny, knowledgeable, considerate and attentive. We saw places and things we have never seen before and didn’t know existed. If you are debating whether to take a tour, do yourself a favour and gift yourself this day. Let Rudy do the driving and you be a tourist for the day. We were looked after from the start of the day to the end with food, snacks and drinks. The lunch was very good BBQ chicken or pork. We would give this tour a four out of five-star rating because the vehicle could be improved upon. In our opinion a new vehicle would elevate this to a full five-star experience. - Meaghan G0 contributionsRoad to Hana Day TourWe had a family of 10 for a road to hana day tour. We had 2 that had to stay behind unfortunately but another lady joined in that we were a bit unsure how she got on since our tour guides sheet said there were 10 total and our family was a total of 10 if everyone was to join. However, beyond our confusion there, we had a good day overall. Our tour guide was awesome and full of energy. We really enjoyed him and the information he provided us. We were given plenty of food (there were some in the group worried if we would have enough food but we had more than enough)! And the food was absolutely delicious! Most of us had the Huli Huli chicken for lunch and I would HIGHLY recommend if that is an option for you - it is incredible! As for the road, we all wished we had stopped a bit more than we did - we felt we breezed past some really impressive waterfalls we would have liked to potentially explore a bit more. Understand that we had a reservation to keep at the black sand beach (which is a highlight) but did feel we rushed past a couple other things due to that. The waterfall we did stop at (the one you can swim at), we didn't find an overly impressive waterfall and it was very busy. I think we would have preferred stopping at some of the taller ones with less people that maybe you can't swim in opposed to the swimmable one as it was a bit chilly to go swimming anyways. We also felt like we were in the car more than we expected - we thought we'd be out looking at things more than we were but found ourselves taking more photos from in the car than out of the car which doesn't make for ideal photos. The black sand beach, though, as mentioned, was beautiful! An hour flew by! I wish we had a bit more time here but understand that is how much time is allotted and glad we got to spend our full hour here! We did end up back at our hotel nearly 2 hours ahead of what the slotted end time said so not sure how that happened. Overall, a good day with some changes we would have liked. We did very much enjoy our tour guide though!Written September 17, 2022
- Trent C0 contributionsDeceptive Advertising "Road to Hana" tourWebsite advertised complete loop tour through Hana, Mahalo did not inform us that the road west of Hana was closed until we had boarded the tour van. We should have received advance notice of the change in their itinerary.Written July 12, 2022
- abikog0 contributionsWorth The MoneyBelow are the summarized points of experience. I traveled solo and had excellent weather (and three drivers). --- THE BAD --- - I received confirmation that my lodging address was pick-up friendly and I did get picked up where I selected. However, turns out Mahalo Tours shouldn't pick up at the address I input. This caused problems as 1) I had to change vans (from Junior) in the morning and ended up with the worst seat in the second van with Lenny as it was almost at capacity with a whole family who boarded beforehand; and 2) at the end of the day, about half an hour was spent with Lenny on the phone trying to clarify who was going to drop me off to my address until eventually Charlie came over to drop me off in the 3rd van of the day. Overall, me van hopping was a time-mooch for everyone and it shaved off time from the tour. - Black Sand Beach. This was the highlight of the trip BUT we were to stop here for 60-minutes and I broke away from the family who also booked the trip to do my own thing. I timed myself and I spent 55-minutes walking/taking photos near the black lava rocks and when I came back up, Lenny was waiting for me, a bit agitated, as the family I shared the van with only spent 25-30 minutes browsing around and were ready to hit the road. Them waiting 20-30 minutes seemed to have inconvenienced them and I think it agitated Lenny who passive aggressively said we should all be conscious of people's time -- directing it at me. As I did keep an eye on the time, I was confident I didn't overstay and looking at timestamps on my photos, I spent 45 minutes on photography and an extra 10 minutes walking around (not a lot of area to cover). If I can spend the full time allotted seeing a church I don't care much for without complaints, they can spend the full time allotted waiting for the rest of the tour group to see the sights we paid for. Lenny should have made this clear to the whole group ... granted it should be common sense when the tour is booked with other people -- but he was also ready to go when the majority were back in the van. If BSB was allotted to 60-minutes... it should be the full 60 minutes. I paid money for this tour too. - The solo seat in the second row on the right side is the worst seat in the house. I was forced into the seat as the rest of the seats were taken up by the family and/or their belongings when I changed vans. The most interesting views are seen from the left side of the van. Good luck if you get stuck on the right side -- esp. that seat. THE GOOD - Drivers were excellent! They were hospitable and good at what they do -- as I mentioned above, I met three. I met Junior, Lenny and Charlie. All three are comfortable with people and very personable. My favorite being Charlie -- absolutely fantastic sense of humor! His wit is unmatched. - Everything of interest was seen. I'm big on photography and it's why I went so I did get my money's worth. Maui also delivered with the excellent weather. - I see some negative comments about driving conditions. Literally the main reason most don't drive the Road to Hana is the winding roads -- it's why I didn't drive it myself. I don't get motion sickness so I didn't mind the drive but do some research before you book and start complaining about the driving. - Food. Food was excellent! They accommodate vegetarians. I love getting sugary snacks (my sugar drops so even if I didn't come prepared, Mahalo tours would have delivered!). All in all, you can't help who you get to share the van with but if you have a large family taking up 85%+ precent of the van, perhaps let a solo traveller know. I'm not the type to bend so it can cause for some bad blood. I'll try to get my money's worth and if I'm given 60 minutes to room around, I'll spend 60-minutes roaming around.Written April 5, 2020
- slix10 contributionsGreat views with friendly driverWe loved our Road to Hana trip with Lenny. He managed to shows us amazing views and part of our family jumped into a waterfall with him. He told us lots of family stories since he had relatives from several places on Maui. We stopped often enough that we never felt captive in the van. We liked that he was courteous to the other drivers on the road.Written March 18, 2020

We started out with a great little breakfast of delicious muffins (strawberry guava...yum!!) and fresh fruit. It was great just being able to relax and let someone drive us! Many stops along the way at main points of interest. Including yummy banana bread. Lunch was hot and delicious. I had the Mahi mahi plate and it was seriously one of the best meals I’ve ever ate! Booked this tour through 3rd party Travelshack while on Pride Of America Cruise. On our check in to cruise the day before, we were told that due to weather and high surf we would not be in Maui for the day the tour was booked. We are NOT being offered a full refund, and you are keeping 25% of my money for offering nothing in return. I have filed a dispute with my credit card company. Buyer beware. We booked elsewhere for the day we were in Maui for a halfway to Hana tour, very satisfied with that.

Aloha,
Unfortunately we are unaware of your interactions with the third party company as it was not booked directly with Mahalo Tours. All third party booking companies have different policies and ticket contracts. I would suggest reaching out to them directly for resolution.

We were picked up at our hotel (a nice benefit) at 0700. We were staying north of Lahaina. We picked up 3 other couples and were at Pa’ia around 0830. Our driver, Rob, was friendly and knowledgeable of the area. We had considered driving it ourselves and are glad we chose this tour. The road begins narrow and curvy, and only gets worse. The stops were beautiful and we never felt rushed. We didn’t expect it to be cloudy and rainy, so we weren’t as prepared for that as we should have been. We took beach towels and that helped a lot. We were given plenty of snacks and fruit along the way. Bring cash for some of the stops to buy additional fresh fruit, drinks, and banana bread (note: none of this was necessary because the tour provided quite a bit). The only downside for us was the last couple of hours seemed to drag. As the road conditions worsened we were forced to drive slower and, with less to see, seemed like it dragged a bit. We were dropped off at our hotel at 1900. The 4-star review is a reflection of the last few hours, otherwise this would have been a solid 5. We would not recommend this for small children or for those who cannot tolerate a long day in a van. We were in the first row of seating, but Dramamine might have been helpful if we were sitting further back.

There were too many great experiences on this tour to say any one was my favorite. We were picked up at our resort in Kihei by Charlie who was very entertaining and knowledgeable at the same time. He was recovering from an injury and unable to be our driver for the actual tour, so he took us to a designated spot to meet up with our tour guide Louie and the other passengers. Once we hopped on Louie's van the fun began. Louie made sure there was plenty of cold water, cut up pineapple and home made pastry for all of the passengers.we had more snacks than our stomachs could hold ! Our 1st stop was at a beach where we saw lots of turtles on the beach. Then We made our way to Aunty Sandy's for banana bread and a scenic ocean view. We stopped in the Wailua Valley and saw some stunning views of a waterfall. There were many waterfalls along this tour. We swam under one of the falls. That was a great experience. Our next stop was Hana Gold Chocolate Factory. We bought chocolate that was made fresh that morning. Our next stop was at a black sand beach. The current was rough, but the water was very refreshing. There was a Lava Tube and Blow Hole at this beach as well. For lunch Louie had called ahead and pre ordered Huli Huli Chicken meals for us that had a green salad as well as macaroni salad and bread and cold juice from Uncle Russell's Red Sand Chicken Stand. We also stopped at Kailani's gift shop in Hana where we had the opportunity to buy hand crafted gifts. We drove completely around the Road to Hana when other vans turned around and took their passengers back home by going back along the same areas they had just driven through. Our driver, Louie gave us a real treat by circumnavigating the entire South End of the Island where we could see an area where there had been a huge lava flow. We drove along the coast the entire way back to meet back up with Charlie, who took us back to our resort. We will never forget Louie for his fun personality and as well as his knowledge about the tour.

We had such a great time on this tour! Justin was a fabulous tour guide who grew up in Hana so he was very knowledgeable about the area. He made the tour personal with stories of his family and the area. The road to Hana is quite a difficult drive on your own so we’re glad that we booked a tour for this. We saw waterfalls, black sand beaches, lave tubes, horses and the beautiful landscape of Hana. The provided lunch was from a local food truck and was super yummy! Would recommend booking this tour over any other because of the local experience that you get with it.

One of the highlights of our trip to Maui was a RTH tour through Mahalo tours. Lenny was our tour guide and helped make it a great day. He was prompt in picking up our group of 9, but laid back and gave us the time we needed at each stop. He showed up some cool things like the lava tube cave, bamboo forest and waterfall (where he led the group on jumps). He is a hawaiian native and shared fun stories about his life on the islands. He kept us laughing and engaged. Lenny took great care of us and watched out for our safety, even taking a machete into the bamboo forest (in case of pigs...lol) and to make us bamboo straws for a coconut he found for us. I was impressed with how he did not suggest or hint around for a tip at the end, of course we took care of him, as he certainly earned it. Highly recommend Mahalo tours and Lenny as a guide. Ronda in the office was also very friendly and helpful. All made you feel like family.

The road to Hana is stunningly beautiful, gorgeous waterfalls and amazing vistas. My experience was not good because of the unprofessional conduct of the driver Lou. After picking up the second couple he turned up the radio extremely loud. Then he announced he had been fired from his last job, soon after he said the last pickup was a lady with a baby—dirty diapers he said. The last pickup turned out to be three ladies with no baby. At the first waterfall stop there are 2 signs saying no jumping, no diving. Lou walked to top of the waterfall and jumped. Later in the tour he told us he was fired because he “saved” 50 people. At the end of tour Lou said a previous guest who was a therapist told him he needed therapy. Lou’s unprofessional conduct and comments made what should have been a unique visit to a very special place not a pleasant experience.

Aloha,
We are very sorry that you found our tour guide Louie to be "unprofessional ”. We strive to be exceptional and are always disheartened to hear that we have not met or exceeded our goal. That being said, we would be happy to respond to your review. Louie was making jokes example fired form last job, baby pick up, therapist etc. Taste in humor, music, food, etc, is subjective.
Lastly, you are correct that Louie should not have ignored the signs and jumped off the waterfall. In his defense, he was having a very difficult day with a sensitive, problematic, opinionated passenger and needed a break. But nonetheless, he should have not indulged. Louie is one of our most requested and highly reviewed driver and we stand behind him 100%. As a regular procedure we contacted the other guests onboard your tour and fortunately they didn’t have the same experience.

Our Road to Hana tour was the highlight of our trip to Maui. Our driver and guide Rob was knowledgeable about all the key stops, and continually pointed out interesting trees, flora and fauna along the way. We made at least 12 stops including a natural pool with waterfall to swim, Half Way to Hana for banana bread and pineapple smoothies, Uncle Russell’s, red sand beach, black sand beach and various lookout points. Pick up and drop off at our hotel was easy. Plan for a 10 hour day. Hot plate Hulu Hulu chicken lunch at Uncle Russel’s was a great differentiation from other similar guided tours. Plenty of water, fruit and snack provided along the way. Would highly recommend this experience.

I was so excited to do this tour, I had researched all the tours and thought I had chosen the best. I was sorely disappointed. I spent over $200.00 per person and it was not worth it, you would think that if you went all the way to Hana that you would get to stop there, maybe buy a few souvenirs? But no, we did a once through and that was it. There are many wonderful little fruit and banana bread stands on the way to Hana, we did not stop at any of them. I really wanted to like this tour but I just can't , yes the scenery is beautiful but I felt I was held hostage to the guide's agenda and not want his customers wanted to do.

Aloha Michele,
I’m sorry you didn’t not enjoy your Hana tour, we did check our GPS and your driver stopped at all the required listed stops. We make all the authorized legal stops from the state and county and the drivers have a set schedule (it’s on our list of stops). unfortunately we cannot just stop anywhere and trespass. He did stop at aunty Sandy’s famous banana bread stand (it’s listed on our list) and he did stop Aunty Vergies flower farm/souvenir shop (it’s on our list of stops) and we did stop in Hana as Waianapanapa black sand beach is in Hana town. The small fruit stands we do not stop is because we rather make scenery stops such as the waterfall, black sand beach and we make more stops than any other Hana tour companies, the tour already is 10 to 13 hours long and that would make it even that much longer also considering the blind turns, 617 curves, oncoming traffic, road conditions etc. I believe a guided tour would not have been a good option for you. Unfortunately sometimes we cannot meet everyone’s expectations no matter how hard we try, we do hope that you have a different experience in your future tours.

So much gratitude to this company for a very memorable experience on the Road to Hana! Thank you, Mahalo Tours for being able to readily modify and re-book our tour due to the very last- minute changes of our cruise itinerary. Thank you for sending us notification as soon as the company found out about the cruise itinerary change. We heard of the itinerary change from Mahalo Tours before we even received the information from the cruise line.
We also want to thank Ronda Erwin for all her assistance in making arrangements for our family for this wonderful tour. It was very easy to work with Ronda and she was so responsive to all our inquiries.
Special thanks to Louie, our amazing guide and driver. His great personality, character and humor made the trip extra special. We also wish to thank Louie for all the information he shared about the flora, fauna and sights along the way.
The Road to Hana Tour was a well-organized itinerary. The lunch and snacks were great as well!

I went to Maui for the day with my boyfriend just to share the Road to Hana experience with him. It started with our wonderful tour guide, Justin, to a small group of 8. Everyone had an extra seat in a van with nice cold a/c. All the reviews share similar pictures and stops along the route. What made it different was our professional and knowledgeable driver. I have visited Maui (3xs) and Oahu (15xs) having been on many excursions with friends and family. He was patient - clear on the time for each stop but didn't rush. People asked him a lot of questions which he answered. The ride was very smooth because he was very mindful of the other cars.
Now for the surprise ending... Justin without any advance planning helped my boyfriend propose to me during the tour. I don't know of any other driver from any other tour company who could excel at his job on top of helping making the most memorable experience of my life. Thank you Mahalo Tours and Justin.

Hello, my name is Janet Woodley
I’m making the small group Road to Hana tour tomorrow (6.6.22) and haven’t been informed of the pick up point.
Can anyone help, please?

They will pick you up at the hotel or wherever you’re staying. If there’s an issue where you are will then give you a location to go for pickup

Hi! Thank you for your help! I have three questions:
1. Does this tour allow you to stop and swim at waterfalls?
2. Do you get to see a blowhole?
3. Does it stop at the black sand beach?
Thanks!!

Yes, you stop at one waterfall to swim. No, we did not see a blowhole.
Yes, you stop at a black sand beach, wear either water shoes, sandals or water socks when down there, the rocks hurt.
