      Great, but skip the lunch
This tour was excellent and informative. Juan Carlos and his team did a wonderful job. The ruins were beautiful to see, and the history is astounding. We wish we would have had more time at the beach and lunch. If we ever did this trip again, we would probably skip the lunch included part and get our own meal.

      Great Experience
We really liked this excursion off our cruise. It was about 4 hours long but we got to see some rich Mayan history and our guide Francisco had so much passion for his history!

      Ruins
Carlos and Victor were very fun and kind. Driving was safe, and the tour of the ruins was small and a very good size. The beach was beautiful.

Wonderful day of History and Beach
We booked this tour thru Shoreexcusioneer.com. Toucan Tours was the local company they hooked us up with. We had a fabulous time!! They took great care of us and were very friendly, knowledgeable and got us back and forth to the ship with no issues at all. Our tour guides were great and the bus ride to the Myan Ruins was enjoyable. Loved that we stopped on the way back and were able to buy some fresh pineapple and mango to enjoy eating on the ride. Love helping to support the locals that way! The beach part of the tour was an added bonus and we really enjoyed our lunch and drinks there too. The service was very good!!! Definitley recommend this tour.

      Excellent Service!
We scheduled the Chacchoben Ruins, beach break and lunch tour. Carlos was an excellent guide and very knowledgeable and informative. When we got to the beach, our group of four was the only one who had scheduled the lunch. This would have left no time for us at the beach. Carlos arranged for us to get a taxi back to the port when we were done at the beach. We were very pleased that they gave us the tour we had planned for.

      Beautiful day!
Such an amazing experience! The ruins were beautiful and Carlos was very knowledgeable about the history. He was funny and entertaining! We had authentic empanadas on the way back to port and they were amazing! I wish we would have had more time on the beach but overall it was a great day! Thank you Ernesto and Carlos!

Our trip to the Mayan Ruins was amazing. It was just me (Mom) and my three boys. We all loved the experience. Carlos was excellent! He was friendly, fun, very informative, and my kids loved him. The beach break was really nice also. Beautiful beach and great service. Definitely book!

      FUN ATV EXPERIENCE
Was a fun experience! It was a memorable experience for my teenager son as it was his first time driving an ATV by himself. The open bar was excellent, Faris made the lunch experience a good one!

      NEVER AGAIN
NEVER booking with Toucan tours again. I was with my 3 younger kids. We went to the maya ruins and then the beach for lunch. They told us to meet back at the bus around 2:40pm. We showed up at 2:40 and the bus was no where to be found. I went back to the restaurant and they told me they left cause we were late. Let me also add at the Maya ruins we waited for several people who were over 15 minutes late. They offered me absolutely no help and told me I would have to catch a taxi to get back to my cruise ship.

      Family visit to Chacchoben
Our tour to Chacchoben (Mayan ruins) was pleasant. First, Juan Carlos our tour guide, was friendly, attentive, made sure we were comfortable the entire trip, and shared details about Mayan culture and history. His presentation made the ride feel short. He offered to take pictures of our group at the ruins and went out of his way to help when I could not find my cellphone. Having Juan Carlos as our guide made the trip excellent! Our driver, Reynaldo was also friendly and his driving was very good. Upon check-in the company (Toucan Tours) offered us drinks (water/soda and beer for adults) and offered plenty of cold water bottles in the van on the way to the ruins. Our family arrived via cruise ship. The only suggestion I have is that the company have a staff member closer to the port exit so that newcomers to Costa Maya know where to go to find the company office. I had to ask two individuals for directions since the address offered in booking details was not coming up via Google or Apple maps. Though once we arrived check-in was quick and staff were friendly.

      Amazing tour
My family of four, ages 21-56 all had an amazing time on this tour. Carlos was our tour guide and he was extremely informative and also a great host. He knew the right amount of humor to mix in to keep everyone entertained. He also had stories to entertain us on the way to and from the ruins, and we even had a chance to visit local food stands. On the trip, I experienced heat exhaustion and was sick. Carlos and our driver, Hernando, went out of their way to take care of me while still entertaining other guests. Carlos even stopped at a local convenience store to get me a remedy that bad me feeling better in under half an hour. I would take this tour again and again as long as Carlos and Hernando were there!!

      Do not use them!
We were scheduled for an ATV/Beach break tour with lunch and adult beverages. After we arrived at the center, they had to look up my information. I confirmed our package. Then paid the balance of $300 at their desk with my credit card. They gave us wrist bands, a 2 min instruction on how to use the ATVS and we started off. My friends ATV completely broke and he had to leave the group to go get a whole other ATV. My sons chain kept falling off several times, so the guide finally just gave him her ATV. We made several stops...but all of them included buying things from people they knew. When we got to the final stop they sent us to the beach break. We were supposed to have lunch and two adult drinks per person. We were sat at a table where a ton of people selling stuff on the beach kept coming up to us even though we made it clear we wanted to be left alone. They told us we only got pop and a "snack" which was just nachos and cheese. This was even after I confirmed the package at check in. We left. I called shoreexcursioneer (who we booked through), and was advised the vendor would get ahold of me. I got a text from them asking for my Paypal or my bank account information for a partial refund. I paid at the check in with a credit card. I told them in no way was I giving them my banking info, so I gave them the Paypal info. They couldn't seem to figure that, and again asked me for my banking info. I refused and called back to shoreexcursioneer. They said after a few days they were still working with the vendor. I still have no resolution. I would NOT recommend using the Toucan Tours or at this point shoreexcursioneer. I feel like we got scammed.

      A great excursion
Carlos, our guide, was very informative in describing the Mayan tradition and culture. He was very helpful and when he saw that we were tired, he asked if we wanted to go back early to the bus. We enjoyed chatting with him on the way to the ruins. Our only bummer was that we didnā€™t have time for the beach at the end. We didnā€™t have that long and didnā€™t realize prior to booking but we did receive a refund for that part. Thank you Toucan Tours! Highly recommend!!

      Horrible ATV ADVENTURE
Do not book this activity. ATVS broke in the first 15 minutes out for the excursion. Then taking us back to get a repair. Then during the activity 2 ATVS chain fell off and stopped on the road. Putting our family in danger riding in streets with cars. We were dropped off in a beach with no return and there was limited drinks no open Bar. There was no place to sit in the beach and we had no return to our point of meeting. paying our way back. Not a good visit. not as described

We, a group of six booked the toor several months before the cruise. When booking, it said that you must book a minimum of four, so as a group of six, we thought weā€™d be comfortable, especially since two members of our group had some physical limitations (we explained this upon arrival). Once we arrived and paid the balance (total of $600), they tried to put six of us in an old minivan. When we saw this, two members with limitations told them they could not go, as they could not physically get in and out of the old minivan. They said no problem, as they have large vans. While waiting, a woman (Carla) was running around yelling in Spanish. She didnā€™t realize that members of our group spoke Spanish and heard her telling the staff that ā€œThey are a problemā€. A short time later a larger van showed up, but they allowed six others to board first, taking up the front of the van. So this left
Is again with a van that would not allow our handicapped group members to get in and out of the van. At this time we voiced our concern again with ā€œEvaā€ who was a manager and just asked for our money back. She apologized and returned our money. We also told her about what Carla was telling and she told us that she was the General Manager, which was shocking to us. We then went back to the port and booked a taxi (ver large van) for the exact tour that we were taking with Toucan Tours, and at half the cost that Toucan was going to charge us. The driver we had was absolutely amazing and we had a great tour.

Let me start by saying I often submit reviews (this platform and others) and aim to be objective in them (pros and cons). It's rare that I have a "terrible" experience. This excursion didn't qualify as terrible but it definitely meets the definition of "poor". And not because of the Ruins. No, no...it rates poorly because of the tour company.

In summary, after being delayed 20 minutes departure on the van, we were taken to the wrong excursion. After being brought back to the field office, we had to wait to talk to a rep (Eva) because she was in a yelling match with the family of 10 whose excursion reservation was also screwed up. Once she got to us and I explained that we were taken to the wrong place she responded with "Well, it was just a mistake". Ok, fine...I get mistakes, they happen. But how long to get me where I was supposed to be an hour ago?? She goes off-script by responding to the spokesperson for the other family and the yelling match begins anew.

Finally, Eva tells me she's found a driver to take me to the ruins and that I should understand that "it's just a mistake". Several times she suggested I just take a refund and forego the entire excursion. "I can just give you your money back and you don't have to go anywhere today." When I declined, indicating the entire point of my day was to see the Ruins she responds with "No, you're not going anywhere I'll just refund you and you can go back to the dock."

She softened a bit, after once again, yelling at the other group. A driver showed up and we got situated in what turned out to be a rickety old Dodge that someone filled up with cigarette smoke prior to our departure. Upon arrival at the Ruins we were told we had less than an hour to explore. Our driver set off on a jog to find a guide to "show us around a bit". The Ruins guide was great...very friendly and gave us a bit of history before we had to rush out. Unfortunately, his original group suffered when he had to go back with us to sites they'd already been to. Sadly, we were rushed through the Ruins and didn't get to truly see/enjoy them. After an hour's drive back we were shuttled back to the dock unceremoniously.

All in all, the Ruins themselves are worth seeing from the little bit I got to see.

Toucan Tours on the other hand?? Save your time, money, and frustration. Too many other companies that you can do business with that will likely appreciate your business. Unless of course you're in the mood for ringside seats to a verbal boxing match with Eva in one corner.

Hi there, while we appreciate and respect each and every opinion thereĀ“s always two sides of the story. Indeed you were mistakenly took to the beach. Unfortunately upon your return to the main office we were having an issue with some very boisterous guests who in retailiation turned to you to make aweful comments to cause uproar. On our behalf you were approached and apologized for our mistake. We even pleaded to you not to heed their words and that we will still offer our services to you but you got carried away by whatever you were told and yourself got enraged and started to throw words; it was at that time that you were told you can get a refund if its your request. On the other hand your husband all calm and serene asked if itĀ“d be long before you depart for your excursion to which you were responded within 5 minutes and so was it. It has always been our aim to render our guests with our utmost best but unfortunately we cannot please everybody. Thank you.

What a great experience. I was nervous, because this was our first time doing an excursion from cruising not with our cruise line. But Toucan Tours did a fabulous job! From our port, we just followed signs to the port exit which weaved through the shops. Just outside the port, there was a representative there to greet us and drive us to where everyone else was! So we didn't have to walk to it like we were told we would have to when we received our confirmation email after booking. The van was air conditioned. Our guide and driver were phenomenal, but I cannot remember their names. Our guide spoke perfect English and during the 45 minute drive to the ruins, the discussed the culture, wildlife, foliage, and all sorts of relative fun facts. We even made a pit stop beside a graveyard to see the elaborate graves. The walking tour was way better than we expected. They provided bottles of cold water and there were restrooms at Chocchoben. We saw many temples are were able to climb up a little ways on each of them. We were taught about the strangler trees, the Chicklee trees that gum is/was made from, and saw many spider monkeys hanging out in the shade of the trees. Our group was small, only 8 people including us, so we got to ask a lot of questions and it was very personable. If you are nervous about booking a tour outside of your cruise line, Toucan Tours is the way to go. We ended up taking longer than expected touring, but were still able to make it back to the port about a hour or two before we needed to be there. Costa Maya was also our favorite port to explore, with the aviation walk through with tropical birds for just a few dollars, large pool, great restaurants and shops. I was also 5 months pregnant and felt very well taken care of. Bring comfy shoes! You'll want to walk around a lot.

To find Toucan tours, you ha e to make your way throigh the port shopping area to the outside taxi/tour parking area. Locate someone wearing the Toucan tours t-shirt and they'll get you into the correct van for your tour.
Our tour guide was Carlos and our driver was Felix. Carlos was very knowledgeable about the area and shared a lot of good information about the Mayan culture and explained how the ancient customs affect the current local customs.
The drive was about 45 minutes to get to the archeological site. Once there Carlos was adept at avoiding the other tours, so it felt like we had the place to our small group. The site is still being restored, so there are several areas that can't be accessed or photographed. But there are plenty that are accessible.
On the return trip, we stopped at Pineapple village and purchased fresh fruit from a local vendor. DELICIOUS. It was two to three dollars per bag of fruit that were easy to share.
Afterwards, we went to a restaurant and beach - side note, we wished we had ordered food, and had them serve us on the beach. Bring cash for a massage right on the beach: about one dollar per minute.
The port area here is amazing! You could spend a whole day there.

This was a great tour, full of many amazing photographic opportunities. Be forewarned that this is still Mexico and they'll grab every dollar they can from you. If you happen to have a DSLR camera, you're forced to pay some sort of nonsense commercial photography fee for $10-$20 (I forgot exactly how much) so keep your camera in your bag until you're well within the ruins tour. That bit of senseless money grubbing is ridiculous. I only gave the tour 4 stars; even though it's not the tour operator's fault it would have been nice to be warned about it beforehand. Apart from that, the tour was great. There is a LOT of walking. If you're not up for a mile or two of walking, lots of stairs and uneven surfaces, this tour may not be for you. It's a LONG bus ride, so bring a book or an activity. My tour guide was amazing. He was a great conversationalist, entertainer, and well informed tour guide. You definitely need to request the stop for street tacos on the way back. Buy the salsa at the roadside stand next to the taco place. Get the "green" (blackish) and the yellow salsa. I'm coming back for more! I plan to take this tour again next yearwhen I come back.

Daniel Jr was our tour guide and all I can say is he taught me more about Mayan culture and history than I have ever learned in any school! This was a shore excursion from a Royal Caribbean (10/10) cruise; getting to the meeting spot on the pier was easy as everything was marked well, the hour long drive was comfortable and was where Daniel Jr shined, and once we were there at the ruins, oh my! It's one thing to tour the ruins and ooh and aah, but when you spend the previous hour learning from Daniel Jr, when you get there and are walking among the ruins, it is a visit that goes much deeper than, "Cool place dude." I walked the ruins trying to imagine what life was like there thousands of years ago. An exhilarating, yet humbling experience. 10/10 would recommend!

Once walking through the entire ship dock village and finding the exit after asking for directions twice- everything then went relatively smoothly. The speakers at the rear of the bus were fairly inaudible- but Carlos, our guide, came to the back of the bus to repeated everything. At the ruins Carlos was excellent, showing photos and explaining life and customs of the time, as we walked the site, which was amazing. I was not expecting the site to be so large and an entire city. We were able to climb some of the ruins. On the return drive, we stopped at a local village for fresh pineapple and mangos with pepper spice. Overall, I was quite impressed and glad we took the excursion.

This tour operator is very unorganized. The trip was supposed to be for a maximum of 25 people and we were 22 people.

You get on one small bus to a hub and then they transfer you to another bus after waiting at their hub. No organization. The a/c wasnā€™t great in the smaller van or the big bus. So essentially this tour had about 50+ people on it. Our group was split onto a mega bus with about 48 people and another van of 12.

We got to the ruins, Victor gave about 10 minutes to look around. Then, he couldnā€™t be found for another 10 minutes.

He then hands us off to a 3rd party tour guide who was great but not loud enough for a group of 50+ not her fault nor did it seem like she was ready for 50+ people.

The way back, the mega bus stopped on the side of the road to let the optional beach tour people out to get on another bus which we were told we would all head to the depot then they would go in another bus.

When the remaining passengers got to the depot, we just stood there for like 15 minutes until we said hey we need a ride to the port. Then someone called someone to get another van for us.

The Chacchoben Mayan Ruins from Costa Maya trip was a lot of fun! If youā€™re booking from a cruise Make sure to give yourself enough time to leave the port as itā€™s l bit of a longer walk than some of the other ports to the exit. The company was waiting right outside of the port with a buggy to take you to their nearby office. The tour started an hour after the boat arrived and we got to the ruins a bit before all of the other tours and that was nice. We were able to get some good pictures and selfies before there was a crowd from people who booked through the cruise line. The tour guide was entertaining and informative especially once we got to the ruins but his English was a little difficult to understand especially from the back of the buss. If you struggle with hearing, try to sit in the front of the bus. The drive was mostly highway and the guide talks about the local culture and ruins on the way there. After the ruins we briefly stopped at a highway street vendor for the ability to purchase some enchiladas or something like that and then there was another stop on the way back for some fresh local fruit that was delicious. Iā€™m glad we saved money and had a better experience than we wouldā€™ve if we booked through the cruise line.

We were in a group of 4 people, including, us, which made for an intimate, personalized experience. Our driver/guide, Eliseo, was knowledgeable, helpful, and flexible with plans - even stopping by a roadside stand when my husband wanted to try the sapote fruit.

The company was easy to find beside the pyramid and drop-off was closer in at the port entry. I highly recommend, and we paid half of what it would have cost through the ship with a large-group tour.
