Overview
Explore the 3,000-year-old Mendenhall Glacier on this 5.5-hour adventure tour from Alaska’s capital city, Juneau. Paddle out on the iceberg-covered Mendenhall Lake for about an hour until you reach Mendenhall Glacier. Then, spend about an hour to an hour and a half on the glacier. Afterward, paddle back to your starting point, and warm up with a hot beverage once you reach the shore.
What to Expect

You’ll begin your journey in downtown Juneau (conveniently located at the cruise ship terminals). Your guides accompany you on the 30 minute transport to the West Glacier boat launch, to outfit you from head to toe in top of the line waterproof clothing and safety gear.

After a safety briefing, and paddling instruction, your group will set off in a native-style canoe.  Anyone in a kayak would be jealous, as you cruise speedily across the lake with your team of explorers!  The lake portion of the tour is approximately an hour each way, giving you the chance to soak up the incredible scenery of vibrant green rainforest, and thundering waterfalls, that flow down sheer cliffs into the glacier lake.  Occasionally fresh glacier calving will deposit massive icebergs into the lake leaving bright turquoise blue walls on the face of the glacier.

The excitement continues as you arrive at the rocky beach landing directly next to the glacier. Follow your guides as they lead you across a moon-like landscape of freshly exposed gravel and carved bedrock, then onto the glacier’s icy surface. 360-degree views of the Mendenhall Glacier provide one-of-a-kind photo opportunities of the millennia-old ice, so bring a camera!

The Mendenhall Glacier is a slow-motion (frozen) river, moving constantly forward, but also melting backward at an alarming rate. This constant shifting and melting causes rapid landscape changes, sometimes forming unique features like ice caves, crevasses, blue pools, moulins, seracs, glacier waterfalls, and streams which all form, disappear, and form again later at different locations.
This ever evolving mountain of ice, makes every tour unique!  Your expert guides will assess the ice stability and lead you to the most incredible views that are safely accessible. Mother nature even provides some of our tours with the rare opportunity to explore inside blue glacier ice caves, or hike to icy ridge-line overlooks! However NO VIEWS OR ICE FEATURES CAN BE PREDICTED OR GUARANTEED, but the possibilities are endless. No matter how the glacier forms, its sure to be awe-inspiring each visit!
With around an hour an a half to explore the ice, you'll definitely see some breathtaking views!

Upon completing your glacier trek, you'll re-fuel with a snack break before paddling back across the lake. On the canoe ride, keep a sharp eye out for wildlife, including Mountain Goats, Arctic Terns, Bald Eagles, Porcupine, Beavers, etc.

Once we return to the launch site you will wind down with a complementary hot beverage before returning to downtown Juneau to celebrate the amazing adventure you just experienced.

Don't pay attention to the "Poor & Average" reviews. This is experience couldn't be further away from "Poor & Average" !

Where do I begin.... Firstly, our tour guides were the best. Matt and Alli were very knowledgeable, fun and our safety was their first priority. Reading the "poor" and "Average" reviews leaves me confused as to how people don't understand this glacier is ever changing....More

Unfortunately the lake freezes in the winter and we are unable to canoe to the glacier. At times people will hike across the frozen lake to get to the glacier which can be highly dangerous. Even if the ice becomes thick... More

Ice caves form and disappear throughout the season, some are there and gone in a matter of days. Ice caves are not always safe to view, approach or enter due to the constant movement and melt of the glacier. Liquid Alaska... More
