Create your own day in paradise on a full-day escape to Tortuga Island. Be ready for an early morning pickup at your San Jose hotel in order to maximize the day’s adventures. Relax on the scenic drive to the Pacific coast, and satisfy your breakfast cravings with an onboard snack. At the coastal town of Puntarenas, hop aboard a boat and relax on the spacious deck for the ride to Tortuga. Feel the cool tropical breeze on your face and admire the verdant passing shoreline and aquamarine waters of the Gulf of Nicoya. Keep an eye out for dolphins and other marine life along the way. Jungle-covered, gently sloping cliffs, and white sandy beaches welcome you to Tortuga Island. Once you step ashore, the day is yours to spend however you please. Relax and catch some rays on the island’s pristine beaches, or venture out into the crystal-clear waters for a swim. Snorkeling equipment, kayaks, and banana boats are all available to rent for a small fee. You can also head inland to explore Tortuga’s tree-shaded nature trails and try your luck at spotting native wildlife. When you’re ready for lunch, enjoy a gourmet beachside buffet prepared by your guide. Savor a selection of fresh salads, grilled fish and chicken, and sides of rice, sautéed vegetables, and fresh fruit. Quench your thirst with water, wine or aromatic Costa Rican coffee. Get into the spirit of the tropics as local musicians provide upbeat island tunes. After ample time on the island, return to the boat and continue relaxing on the ride back to Puntarenas. Take a coach back to San Jose and be dropped off at the door of your hotel in the evening.

Tortuga is nice but the food was not good. The traffic was horrible. We spent so many hours in the bus. The boat is very slow. You couldn’t hear what they say in the microphone.. not a good day..

Nice Getaway But Do Not Expect Too Much Else
Dec 2019
The Tour was beyond outstanding- NO detail missed and I highly highly recommend it! The island however, is simply a nice beach and not much else to do there. Great for a day to get away and just R&R.

Perfect day trip!
Dec 2019
This had to be by far the best feature of our trip. The tour started early in the morning with snack on the bus enroute to the port Punterenas. The size of the boat for the number of passengers was adequate. We had plenty of refreshments Pineapples, Watermelon, Passion fruit juice on the almost 2 hour ride to Tortuga Island. Spent some time on the beach. Lunch served was good, they had made special accomodations for us as we are vegetarians. After lunch we choose to go for a hike, although we did not see any birds or wildlife we enjoyed gorgeous views of the ocean from the top of the hill. Andrea our guide was phenominal, her knowledge of the history of Costa Rica, the nature and surroundings was phenominal. She is definately a great asset to the tour company. The only thing not well doine was the transfer from the small bus to a big bus that we travlled to the idland. The transfer was handled right on the highway, with not much space to walk, We would recommend take the extra 5 minutes to pull of an exit and make the transfer in a safer way.. Otherwise we would give A+ on the tour. Wev enjoyed it. It is definately very tiring at the end of the day. If you choose to take this trip make sure the next day is an off day, so you dont have to wake up real early in the morning.. It always helps to goi prepared for the beach, hiking or watersports so you can enjoy all aspects of the trip.

Overcrowded, long travel
Dec 2019 • Couples
I’m usually a go with the flow kind of person, but if I could go back I wouldn’t go on this trip. The ride: pick up was on time around 6:30am and the bus was comfortable, but the bus ride was 2-3 hours depending on whether you were picked up first or last. If you don’t mind that then it shouldn’t be an issue but after traveling to the country it was long on top of the boat ride (another 2-3 hours) “Breakfast”: the breakfast they claim is far from breakfast. It was a small roll with 1 piece of ham and 1 piece of kraft singles with oil and vinegar mixture put on a day before before. It was soggy and tasted bitter, an apple, and a juice box. Get breakfast before hand please. Boat: the boat ride was another 2-3 hours. It was over crowded and not enough seating for everyone. The boat was apparently built to hold 200 people, but they should consider halfing that for comforts sake. Multiple companies use this boat on the same day. People were pushy and obnoxious getting off the boat and navigating through the boat. Honestly pretty rude. wouldn’t take kids or seniors on this for sure. The entertainment was good, they had a bar that was reasonably priced, and they served fruit and a small portion of ceviche which was nice and included in price. The island: only 5 hours of the long 15 hour (we got back to our hotel around 9-10pm) day were spent on the island. The island itself was beautiful, but again over crowding ruined the experience. Multiple companies take their guests here and although beach chairs were provided, it was very crowded. And people were playing soccer and volley ball right next to all the chairs since there’s not enough room, and no matter where you sat so you would get hit with sand in the face and literally with balls so it was impossible to relax in the chair for more than 5 minutes. They should minimize courts and not allow soccer if they claim for this to be “relaxing” it’s not. There were a good amount of variety of options of extra activities like banana boat, snorkeling etc to do which was nice for an extra cost Lunch: lunch was delicious but again it’s not your group it’s a group of at least 100 people in line for lunch so it takes a while to get served. It was also served later than advertised (around 2pm) so bring a snack between breakfast and lunch. Trip back: again, the commute back was another 5-6 hours between the boat and the bus. Overall: it seemed very impersonal, overcrowded and the commute was very long for the little time spent on the island. Would not recommend

Great Pacific Coast Costa Rica Activity
Dec 2019 • Solo
I recommend bringing swimwear and sunscreen. Also my trip the cost for snorkeling was $20. Make sure you bring money for other activities too if you want to enjoy everything the island has to offer. There are also lockers available to hold your items while you’re having fun so you don’t have to worry about your things. The trip includes a nice tour bus ride as well and my guide did a great job. Highly recommend if you want to see one of Costa Rica’s white sand beaches.

This Excursion Sort of Ruined the Trip
Jun 2019
* Caveat - no reply needed from the company My wife, brother, sister-in-law, and niece took this excursion in June 2019. We were picked up in Jaco. First tip - If you do this excursion, just stay in Punta Arenas the night before. I've been on numerous excursions all over the world, to include excursions to islands on a few other continents, and for this excursion the drive from San Jose or Jaco is just too long - I believe we were on the bus about two hours each way. The breakfast or snack they advertise here is at a small restaurant with little amenity and food that classifies as basic sustenance. I'm a former infantry Marine and I've made better meals in the field out of MREs. It's certainly nothing to crow about and I'm just trying to give you the full skinny because our experience was that everything in CR was hyped up - they (Tikos) think they have the best coffee and chocolate in the world as well, so that's how they advertise it and justify a $2 tiny piece of chocolate. Although I'd suggest staying in Punta Arenas, it would be just for the excursion as the port city is near an industrial port and there's really nothing much to do right in the city (unless you're a local and know about something not clearly evident from what we could see.) There also seemed to be no sights in and around the area - literally the only thing was Tortuga Island. That's not just the highlight, but the only saving grace of the trip. Based on all my previous experiences I felt the craft was a bit dingy, although I've seen dingier in Italy, Greece, Thailand, and Spain, I suppose. I think we were supposed to get a free drink, but the overall vibe of the trip even before we arrived on the island told me not to risk it. Upon arrival we were advised of prices for beach chairs and umbrellas and such. But, when we got on the beach and tried to claim some chairs, some areas are roped off in a confusing manner, and the guy who approached us told us a price that was double what they said on ship. Plus, he was rude about it to the point of enraging me to get in his face and I snatched my money out of his hand. I come from very modest roots and personally feel angst towards those I perceive as privileged or of legacy entitlement, etc. So, the devil knows his own - I could see in this guys face he hated serving gringos or despised the fact that I questioned the amount he asked for. When I asked the group leader under the trees at the group eating area what the price was for the chairs, he forgot - they had to talk about it. So, from my experience I'd say the price depends on the season and fullness of the booking, and our ship was packed. The meal on island was also nothing special. We got some sort of mimosa like drink, but I can get that anywhere. They made it seem like a big to-do. The area you can excursion at is small as the rest of the island is privately owned. The snorkeling area is small and they (the actual guides) said it was rough swimming and not advisable for children. People were playing beach volleyball, but I didn't travel all this way to play a game I can play anywhere else. By interesting contrast, one can zip-line anywhere too and the staff at the zip-line we did in CR made it a wonderful experience. The beach area is gorgeous and I got some great portraits. But, overall this is one of the most expensive and most disappointing excursions I've ever been on and certainly not worth over $90 per person. I've been on better city bus tours that cost maybe $15. Unfortunately, this is probably one of the nicer more beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. So, at the end of the day the entire well-traveled family assessed that while beautiful and full of beautiful and nice people, Costa Rica overall is not a place we'll likely return. This excursion was a key factor in that assessment.

Off-Season Tortuga Island
Oct 2019
This classic tropical beach in late October was free of crowds that resulted in a very pleasant comfortable cruise to and from the island and a beach that offered plenty of clean sand and a extensive mild surf for a relaxing time in the water or laying in the sun. A satisfying adequate lunch was provided and the bar was well stocked and available. The beach itself was free of anyone but the visitors and they were all friendly enough for light conversation (no souvenir or coconut salesmen). A great way to spend one of the first days of your visit to Costa Rica to rest in preparation for the rest of your visit.

This trip was great! My friend and I decided to be based in San Jose and take excursions to other parts of the country. Isla Tortega was beautiful. It drizzled for a few minutes at noon and that was it. The food was good. The staff was excellent. Our guide was Josue. The souvenir shop on the island has cute little trinkets. The bus ride was an hour and half to the port. From the port to the island was another hour and a half, but the boat ride had snacks and entertainment. The only thing I personally didn’t care for was the bathroom situation, but it’s to be expected on an island and a boat
