The biodiversity of this site has attracted the attention of tourists and conservationists for more than 35 years. Due to its importance as a source of food and nesting, it is one of the best places in Costa Rica for bird watching. Our tour begins by embarking in Guatuso, a rural town, from where we navigate the riverbed to the Caño Negro Refuge, where an experienced guide will show you various species such as: sloths, three types of monkeys, caimans, lizards, bats, birds and a variety of flora typical of wetlands. At the end of this profitable boat safari tour, our last stop will be at the house of Don Abelino and Doña Wendy where we will share a traditional lunch in order to learn more about the culture and especially the Costa Rican gastronomy.

Best tour we’ve done in Costa Rica so far. Authentic experience of the local culture and the pristine forest expedition by boat. So beautiful and special. JP was absolutely amazing and managed an impossible task of getting our kids engaged and entertained despite heavy rain. My kids were so excited that they were begging to go back and do the boat tour again by the end of the tour. JP even turned a regular drive to the boat into a wildlife spotting adventure and told us so many interesting facts about the country on the way. Don Abellino was so professional - we felt very safe with him on the boat ride. Donna Wendy’s farm visit and lunch were also such an amazing experience. The food was delicious. She was so nice and accommodating. We definitely will be back on our next visit. Highly recommend it.

Jacamar Tours provided us with a very special day at Cano Negro. Jairo was both our driver and guide, and he did an outstanding job explaining the overall habitat to us. He had great knowledge about each of the species we saw, and was able to answer our questions clearly and with good humor. We were able to see quite a lot including white-faced monkeys, crocodiles, caymen, and many different bird species, as both Jairo and our boat driver know this area quite well. They used their scopes to help us take photos we never could have taken on our own. The 2.5 hour boat ride was calm and peaceful, so even if there was no immediate sighting the ride and scenery were quite different and enjoyable. We stopped at a family home for both a quick breakfast and a delicious lunch. On the drives to and from, Jairo was able to share stories of local life, farming techniques and wildlife migration in the area. We were back at Nayara Gardens right on schedule, filled with great information and memories.

Amazing guided tour to see lots of wildlife (+ bonus home cooked Costa Rican meal)

My fiancé and I signed up for the Cano Negro boat tour while we were staying in the Arenal area. The trip was very well organized and provided a great opportunity to see lots of wildlife (howler monkeys, sloths, crocodiles, etc.) in close proximity as we boated along the Rio Frio River in Cano Negro.

A bit of details about the trip: from the beginning, we were impressed with how well organized and intimate the trip was. We expected that we would be part of a large tour group, but we were pleasantly surprised when our tour guide, Tony, picked us up from our hotel in Arenal in an SUV and informed us that the tour (organized through Jacamar) would be private and is designed for couples / families / small groups. This was a huge plus since we were able to have our guides attention the whole day. Another pleasant surprise is that while Cano Negro is about a 90-minute drive from the Arenal area, our guide, Tony, quite literally started the tour the minute we got into his SUV and started the drive up to Cano Negro. All along the way Tony spotted various wildlife and discussed a broad array of topics ranging from conservation policies in CR to differences in migration patterns of birds and their dietary habits, etc. I have to say, I was prepared to be somewhat zoned out for the long drive, but it was both informative and engaging. Tony, like many of the guides we met, had advanced degrees in Biology and was charismatic and highly enthusiastic about his work, which made the trip both informative and fun.

Once we arrived in Cano Negro, we stopped at a family run farm that works closely with Jacamar and had coffee and some kind of sweet bread before departing on a boat trip along the Rio Frio. The boat trip was awesome. I’ll leave the pictures to speak for themselves. Tony, Brian (our boat captain) and Pablo (another guide who was learning from Tony) were quick to spot various wildlife during our trip. We saw some Howler monkeys in a fig tree which was pretty cool to see, as well as a plethora of different birds, lizards and crocodiles, but by far the highlight (for us) was seeing elusive three toed sloths up close (see pictures). Without our guides, I have zero confidence I would ever spot one of the sloths, given that their fur is covered in the same lichen that coats the trees they live in (which makes them blend in quite well).

Last but not least, we stopped back by the family farm for a home cooked meal. The Casado was delicious and actually one of our favorite meals of the entire trip. The cheese accompanying the meal was even made fresh with water buffalo milk from the family’s farm.

Overall, if you want to see and learn about Costa Rican wildlife, this trip is for you! You also get the added bonus of a nice home cooked meal!

My wife and I booked this excursion through our resort at Nayara. Jacamar Tours picked us up on time at the resort. We had booked a "group tour" (much less expensive than a private tour), but it turned out that there was only one other couple on the tour, so it was almost private.

The drive to Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge took nearly three hours and was a bit unnerving. Our driver, 'Johnny', drove very fast, passing nearly every vehicle in his way. It was not the relaxing drive through the area that we had hoped to enjoy. Johnny did seem like a very nice guy, but he really needs to slow down a bit and realize the passengers are not in a big hurry and would rather travel at a more reasonable pace to be safe and to take in the awesome views of Costa Rica.

The trip on the Rio Frio river in Cano Negro was awesome! We toured a very scenic and uncrowded stretch of the river for about 2-2.5 hours. (During all that time, we saw only one other boat- a local fisherman.) We saw lots of birds and animals: howler, spider and white face monkeys, and various reptiles such as iguanas, caimans, crocodiles, Jesus Christ lizards and turtles. The boat captain, our guide Alan, and our trainee-guide Jason, were all excellent. They were knowledgeable, friendly, and informative along the entire river tour.

When we finished the river tour, there was an incredible and authentic Costa Rican lunch waiting for us at the home of the boat captain and his wife. The food was delicious and we genuinely appreciated the hospitality provided by the family.

Our drive home, with Johnny at the wheel, was once again a nail-biting experience. In addition to the excessive speed and his passing every vehicle along the way, he had an animated conversation with Alan with both of his hands frequently off of the steering wheel. It somewhat marred what was otherwise an exceptional experience with Jacamar.

Still, a highly recommended tour. Just ask for a different driver.

Allan was our guide and, like all of our Jacamar guides, he arrived on time, knew exactly what we were doing, and had lots of knowledge to share. It’s a drive from la Fortuna to Cano Negro, but our car was comfortable, the road good, and Allan was a good conversationalist.

As we approached cano negro, he spotted a three toed sloth in a tree so he pulled over and got out a high power scope so we could see greater detail. Amazing and the day kept getting better. We arrived at a local family’s house and were served refreshments before we got on the covered boat. At first I wasn’t sure about meeting the family but they were so welcoming and the food was delicious (bathrooms were clean!j that I realized this was a unique cultural experience that really showed us pura vida.

The boat ride was comfortable and relaxing because it was so peaceful on the river. Our tour took us on a part of the river that didn’t have any other tourists. We saw howler monkeys and white faced monkeys, numerous bird species including the American Pygmy kingfisher, caiman, Jesus Christ lizard, iguanas and giant crocodiles!

Allan was very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna, but didn’t overwhelm us either which was nice. They always stopped the boat to make sure we could see the animals. After we were done with the ride, we went back to the house and ate a delicious lunch prepared for us. It was a huge meal and very delicious!

My husband and I went with our 9 year daughter. We highly recommend this tour. The covered boat was nice because it protected us from the sun! While there are no guarantees about seeing wildlife, we were amazed at how much we saw on this trip! It’s memorable!

I took this tour back in December 2017, and I still think back to the trip, the sights and conversations. Our guide Ronald was highly knowledgeable and made the experience so full and rich with information, stories, observations, and humor. The drive to and from the Cano Negro Boat tour had some of the best moments - pulling over to see a rare bird, conversations about the Costa Rican culture we were seeing (cows, horses), and plant talk. We met a Costa Rican family who shared a piece of the their home life with us, providing a very solid cup of coffee and tasty little cookies.

The boat tour itself was very cool. We saw wild iguanas, several types of monkeys, a caiman, bats, birds, and more. Again, our guide was fantastic, adding so much life and energy to the boat. We returned to the Costa Rican family home and enjoyed a delicious Costa Rican meal. It was a wonderful experience that continues to bring joy looking back.

We were picked up at our hotel in La Fortuna. There were only 4 people on the tour, two of us and another couple. There was a driver and a guide in a minivan. About a 1-1/2 hour ride up to Cano Negro wildlife area. The guide was great, gave a background of Costa Rica and the area we were visiting on the way up. We stopped once to check out a sloth in a tree next to the road. The nice thing about the Jacamar tour of Cano Negro is they go to a separate area from the rest of the public. We didn't see any other tour groups the entire 2 hours or so on the river. We had a snack before the boat ride and lunch after at a family's house. The lady cooked a great local style lunch (several choices available). Saw lot's of wildlift - many different birds, howler monkeys, three toed sloths, alligators, caimans (like crocs), iguanas, etc... We booked direct with Jacamar.

Arranged a "cruise" through Jacamar for a last-minute trip to Costa Rica and were THRILLED with our day. Even though tourism has started returning to Costa Rica, when our guide, Jose Pablo (JP) picked us up at our hotel, we found that it was JUST us! JP took us on an unbelievable day. Within minutes, he knew that we enjoyed birding so as soon as he cleared La Fortuna on our drive, we were making frequent stops as he saw birds for us to add to our list (and his identification of them was 100% accurate!). The base camp where we met up with our "crew" and ate along the Rio Frio was excellent. Wendy and her family were VERY welcoming and hospitable and the facilities were very clean and comfortable (NOTE - their English was a bit limited but wasn't an issue at all as JP helped out in the few cases where it was an issue). The cruise itself was fantastic. Granted, we stayed on the Rio Frio and never quite made it to Cano Negro, but this was NOT an issue. We still saw all of the animals we expected and it was a beautiful day.

If JP is indicative of the guides that Jacamar uses, then they are well-run! He was exactly what I look for in a guide in that his knowledge was excellent, had a great sense of humor to keep us entertained on the drive, was VERY passionate about what he was sharing with us and tweaked what we were doing to adjust to what his clients were obviously interested in doing.

The ONLY thing that was a downer was the boat. Not that is was uncomfortable or anything but that it wasn't covered and based on ALL of the pictures we had seen this is what we expected. In some ways, not having a cover on the boat was MUCH better for viewing the birds, but as my wife is VERY fair-skinned, it would have been helpful if we had been notified prior to the cruise that because it was the only the two of us, they were using a smaller boat and would not be covered. This way we could have planned accordingly. Not an issue in the big picture but it is something that can easily be addressed by Jacamar.

Bottom line, we were THRILLED with our day, our guide and the experience and heartily recommend them if you are looking to go!
