What to Expect
Book your preferred tour option and meet your guide to make your way by train or foot to Dharavi. Alternatively, upgrade for round-trip transport from a designated location (see Itinerary for details). On arrival, take a walking tour through the alleyways of households and businesses, learning from your guide about the working conditions of the textile-making, potteries, leather-tanning, and recycling businesses. Discover the area's tight-knit sense of community and religious diversity, and tour the recycling district, where plastics and old computers arrive from worldwide. Visit a bakery that makes tea biscuits, see artisans crafting clay pots, and watch local women cooking poppadom (flatbreads). Explore a replica home, view photos taken by children in an art project, and visit an NGO-sponsored community hub where people come to learn and enjoy activities. After a soda at a reception center, make your way back according to your chosen option. Please note: Your tour guide is sensitive to the issues surrounding slums and understands that this tour may not be suitable for everyone. Guides believe that the purpose of this tour is for educational reasons alone and allows for a better understanding of Indian life inside Dharavi. Most of the proceeds from the local tour operator goes back into the local community to support a variety of projects on education, health, and livelihood.

My husband & I did the afternoon tour with Sabena, joined by 2 others in Dharavi. Sabena is a third generation resident of Dharavi so the place resonates with her. What can I say?? It's a city within a city with its own hierarchy - older residents have the large houses &

This is a must see in Mumbai, it will change your idea of a slum completely. It is in fact a city within a city and it is thriving. Our guide Sabina lives in Dharavi and is a credit to her community. She worked hard at school and continued her education learning English by

This was one of our highlights in Mumbai. It was a eye opener to see life within the city of Dharvi and its people at work/play. Our tour guide was great and so informative as she took us around the maze of streets and lane-ways. Would thoroughly recommend this tour.
