Overview
This Dharavi slum tour provides a window into Mumbai's working neighborhood, and the area is best explored with a guide to gain a well-rounded view without getting lost. On this tour, you'll explore the alleyways of makeshift homes and workshops, and meet the locals, learning how they live. Most proceeds go back into the community, and you'll explore in a small group limited to six. Upgrade for round-trip transport for convenience.
What to Expect
Book your preferred tour option and meet your guide to make your way by train or foot to Dharavi. Alternatively, upgrade for round-trip transport from a designated location (see Itinerary for details).

On arrival, take a walking tour through the alleyways of households and businesses, learning from your guide about the working conditions of the textile-making, potteries, leather-tanning, and recycling businesses.

Discover the area's tight-knit sense of community and religious diversity, and tour the recycling district, where plastics and old computers arrive from worldwide.

Visit a bakery that makes tea biscuits, see artisans crafting clay pots, and watch local women cooking poppadom (flatbreads). Explore a replica home, view photos taken by children in an art project, and visit an NGO-sponsored community hub where people come to learn and enjoy activities.

After a soda at a reception center, make your way back according to your chosen option.

Please note: Your tour guide is sensitive to the issues surrounding slums and understands that this tour may not be suitable for everyone. Guides believe that the purpose of this tour is for educational reasons alone and allows for a better understanding of Indian life inside Dharavi. Most of the proceeds from the local tour operator goes back into the local community to support a variety of projects on education, health, and livelihood.

A new eye on Mumbai slums

We visited Dharavi slums with our kids. Great experience to discover what really is this slum. An incredibly active area with thousands of workshops in many different industries. Very nice people and families. We highly recommend this tour

An uplifting experience

As others have said, I was expecting to come away quite depressed from this tour, having seen the conditions our fellow humans were living in. Quite the reverse - we came away uplifted at what people can do with a little determination. Would have loved...More

Dharavi Slum Tour - a must!

Excellent tour of the slum. If there is one thing you have to do in Mumbai it is this. You get a taste of the slum up-close, something you otherwise would not see. Highly, highly recommend.

Extraordinary experience that you won't forget.

We chose Reality Tours because the business is located in Dharavi and it puts most of its profits back into improving the lives of children, especially, in the community. We arranged to be picked up at the port and to have an all day private...More

The tour timing is kind of flexible as your guide is from the slum and can meet you at your hotel or nearby station. Best to organise this with the tour company beforehand via email. We had phone roaming so we were also... More
