- karen8988920 contributionsRe-create authentic Malaysian flavours with precision and skillGreat cooking class with a superb instructor. Sara taught a complex and demanding recipe (Hainanese chicken rice) with patience and skill, and the final dish turned out exactly as it should. Note that I am a novice cook with an underlying fear of knives and open flames 😊 The course was held in her mother’s home kitchen, which was spacious and well equipped with everything you need. We began with a tour of her back garden, where we harvested the herbs for the recipe. Sara and her mum prepared a wonderful breakfast before starting the course, including “Ten Thousand Fragrance” tea (also from the garden). What I really liked about this cooking class was the precision: all of the recipes I got from Sara were exact, with the amounts measured out in grams or liters. This has made it possible for me to re-create this unique recipe in my own kitchen.Written February 8, 2024
- salsafifi0 contributionsSatay, Malay pulled tea and Wok fried Kwai Teo flat noodlesThoroughly enjoyable experience learning Malay hawker cooking and its herbs and spices by passionate Sara. Have always wanted to learn do my go chicken satay properly as well as showing off pulling Malay tea Teh Terik, but turned out most difficult frying Keow Teo rice noodles but manage doing so in only two and a a minutes under the heat of a hot wok. Delish and fun that worth our sweats.Written February 14, 2020
- carmen_from_canada0 contributionsA great glimpse into traditional Malaysian cookingA couple of doting moms and teens spent a morning learning how to cook popular Malaysian fare, including sourcing and a garden herb tour. Sara is thorough and patient, the kitchen was perfectly set up for our group of 5, and the family garden is beautiful. It was a fun experience, and highly worthwhile if you love food and want to learn more about the local culture.Written December 19, 2019
- Hannah B0 contributionsGreat cooking class!I really enjoyed this authentic Malaysian cooking class during my time in Kuala Lumpur. Sara and her mother were very gracious hosts and have a lovely home. The cooking class was very organized, easy to follow and all the food was delicious. I look forward to making these recipes back home!!Written September 24, 2019
- MaryLeeSmith19860 contributionsSimply delightful!I was not particularly gifted in cooking and thought it was a hassle. But coming to the New Malaysian Kitchen just opened my eyes on how easy it is to cook these complicated and delicious Malaysian dishes. Now, I can go anywhere in the world knowing how to whip up my favourite Char Kuey Teow dish and also pulled tea ('teh tarik'). I also selected the satays in peanut butter sauce and banana fritters too, as appetisers and desserts. I must say they were quite delicious as well, to my surprise with my amateur cooking skills. Well, I must attribute this to Sara Khong for being such a methodical, good and fun teacher. Highly recommended.Written July 28, 2019
- Kees C0 contributionsA “must do” if you love cookingWith Sara we had excellent Malaysian cooking lessons. She informs you upfront with some route information, very convenient. I was lucky to be in a very friendly and polite Japanese company. Sara showed us everything, - the herbs and seeds in her own garden - how to make your own spice, curry, marinade and sambal - and of course the dishes itself, it was very well prepared with a small recipe book, together with all the ingredients. We made the following dishes: Malaysian Four-angled bean salad Nasi Lemak Sambal Malaysian Spiced fried chicken pearl Sago Pudding Malaysian pulled tea It tasted really excellent, better than in my 5-star hotel! Afterward Sara send us some tips, pictures, and additional recipes. It is a really “must do” if you love cooking. A big thank you for Sara.Written July 18, 2019

- canadiansontour30 contributionsFun and Authentic Cooking Experience! My adult daughter and I chose this activity as a fun way to spend time together while she was visiting on holiday and as a way to learn more about cooking authentic Malaysian dishes including nasi lemak, ayam goreng berempah and teh tarik. We had the best time! Sara was a welcoming, thoughtful and enthusiastic host. She was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. We not only learned a lot but had so much fun! We enjoyed making and sampling culinary delights made with fresh ingredients right out of her lovely garden. We loved the edible garden tour and learning about the different plants and how they are used in various ways. Sara was an amazing instructor. She explained the purpose of the ingredients and preparation methods and adapted activities to meet the ages and abilities of the class. She offered many cooking tips and hacks. Her enthusiasm was contagious and I hope to be back for more classes in the future! My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and would highly recommend it!Written July 10, 2019
- Joandtwins0 contributionsThis is a must do 5 star activityMy family of 5 ( husband and me and my mum in law and put 10 year old twins) had a private cooking class today. It was so well organized and Sara is extremely knowledgeable and kind. She made sure the kids were kept interested. My mum in law is a great cook but has never before cooked Malaysian. She and I both bought Sara’s cookbook and can’t wait to cook from the book. It’s relaxed but you’ll learn loads and leave feeling like Sara and her lovely mum are friends. Oh and the food we cooked was amazing!Written July 9, 2019

- Excursion1934360 contributionsWonderful experienceSara was a very warm and engaging cooking instructor and she made the class very enjoyable. I elected to cook a range of hawker foods and I ended up making 5 authentic dishes (including pulled tea), that tasted just like they would from a hawker stand. I was very impressed with all of the skills and kitchen hacks I picked up during the class. Thanks Sara.Written June 23, 2019
- luk6040 contributionsLike cooking with a friendSara was a very good instructor and is a very lovely and helpful person! She prepared a nice recipe book for us and showed us around in her beautiful garden. She explained a lot about the plants. We cooked a traditional malaysian meal which was very delicious and easy to make. We really enjoyed it. We even got a traditional Malaysian breakfast before we started cooking. Sara was so nice that we felt like cooking with a friend.Written June 13, 2019
- Golengolen0 contributionsAuthentic ExperienceWe were 3 friends from Europe and willing to discover more about the Malaysian cuisine. We spent a really nice time with Sara! The class was well organised : all the ingredients and cooking tools ready to be used, recipe booklet to bring back home and email with pictures and tips. We cooked Nasi Lamak with fried chicken and Teh Tarik. Typical recipes but accessible for beginners and Sara takes time to explain all the steps, I recommend that class for a local experience.Written June 10, 2019
- Guide5775880 contributionsWonderful cooking and market experienceMy sister and I spent a great morning with Sarah exploring the local wet market to source produce and then prepare and cook it for lunch. On the way to the market we dropped in to pick up fresh coconut milk from a local couple who showed us how they hulled the flesh from the coconuts and then put it through a machine that grinds the flesh, squeezing the moisture (milk) into a container. At the market Sarah showed us local vegetable produce and we sampled a slice of delicious sticky pork that the vendor packs in a fresh bread roll for a lunch treat. We met Sarah's lovely Mum who explained for what dishes you'd use the different types of noodles and lots of other valuable tips. Returning to Sarah's home we sat down to a local breakfast, including roti canai and nasi lemak. We then toured the garden which was full of many and varied edible plants, some of which we picked to enhance the flavours of the dishes we were about to cook. We made char okay teow and chicken skewers with satay dipping sauce followed by a sago pudding made with fresh coconut milk and real palm sugar. It was a full on five hours and we left with take away for dinner having had a wonderful experience. Thanks SarahWritten June 8, 2019

The cooking lesson with Sara was absolutely delightful and thoroughly educational! When we arrived, we had a light local breakfast graciously provided for us by Sara before proceeding to her garden where she educated us on the herbs used in most Malaysian cuisine. We got to identify and smell the unique differences between each of them in her quaint garden before heading back in to her homely kitchen where she had set aside all the ingredients neatly. She then explained each ingredient to us and guided us throughout the prepping and cooking process in a clear manner that was easy to understand and follow. She has broken down the recipe steps into a near exact science and taught us about this interesting method of identifying when an ingredient is ready to be taken out of the wok! We were surprised at how effortlessly we were able to recreate an iconic Malaysian dish! We have nothing but thanks for Sara’s lovely personality and genuine hospitality. Whether you are a local (which we were) or a tourist, we highly recommend Sara’s class as it is a truly charming experience worth your buck and time.

I had recently attended one of Sara’s cooking classes with my girlfriend and I actually properly cooked something and it tasted delicious! All thanks to Sara Khong for unlocking my newfound ability to cook.
I haven’t smelled so many different spices and herbs in awhile. Having a tour of her garden was really a treat, as it was so enlightening to learn so much from what’s readily around us if we took the time to learn about it. When the time came for us to cook, I was amazed at the many ingredients that were needed just to make a bowl of curry laksa, sambal and Yong Tau Foo. We spend quite a bit of time cooking a storm but it was totally worth it. Everything came together with the proper guidance from Sara with her simple to follow little cook book instructions, resulting in the most flavourful curry laksa and tasteful Yong Tau Foo that I’d ever put in my mouth.
I’d highly encourage anyone who wants to give cooking a try to come Sara’s Class. Also, if you run out of couple-things to do together, this would definitely be a must try too!

My daughter is an avid cook, so we celebrated her birthday with a family vegetarian cooking class with Sara, preparing and cooking (and eating!) nasi lemak, vegetarian rendang, cabbage with turmeric, ondeh-ondeh and teh tarik. The four of us (parents, and kids aged 13 and 14) all enjoyed the very interactive class, as well as learning more about Malasyian cuisine and culture. I am already planning to bring family and friends here when they visit.
The morning started with a light breakfast of delicious blue-coloured tea (made from plants from the garden) and a range of local roti - plus some very thoughtful kuih muih as a birthday cake for my daughter. We then had a fascinating tour of Sara’s organic herb garden, smelling and tasting different leaves, and cutting some fresh to be used in our cooking. We were each given a recipe booklet, though Sara talked through everything, so they were more for future reference, rather than use on the day. Sara ensured that we were all involved in preparing and cooking each of the dishes, and discussed cooking tips and recommendations on where to find particular ingredients afterwards. Monkey head mushrooms are the way to go! After cooking all the delicious dishes, we sat down to eat, and Sara (and her mother) joined us to chat about Malaysian cooking, culture and life!
Covid protocols were reassuring, with us all taking tests beforehand, and then using masks and distancing throughout.
Would highly recommend.

This was SO MUCH FUN! II found the virtual cooking class by Sara to be one of the best ways to learn Malaysian cooking from home - WAY BETTER than watching YouTube. Having Sara guide me through each step and explain all the details was so valuable and her expertise shines through as soon as you connect with her. She knows her stuff!
For my first class (I will be doing many more, Malaysian food is some of the best in the world and Sara is incredible!) , I requested Nasi Lemak, and WOW, I was so surprised by how delicious it turned out for my first time! As a beginner cook, I was not expecting that I could actually make something that delicious! And that's all because of how Sara guides you through each step and tells you exactly when to do what at the right time and explains to you why! She has excellent skills and learning from her can help you improve much faster than trying to learn from online recipes or YouTube, it's definitely a worthwhile experience.
And even though the class was online, I think it was just as good as in person, because Sara went above and beyond by helping me before and during the class with the requirements. It was an amazing experience, especially during these times! I will be doing more classes!

My teenage daughter and I had a market tour, followed by breakfast, a tour through the garden with all the spices, then cooked lunch and enjoyed the great food.
We loved the whole experience and this was certainly one of the highlights of our trip. To also meet her mom and see a private house added to the unique experience.
Sara was wonderful - she explained everything very well, made sure we knew what we were doing and always made sure to include my daughter. Her recipe booklet is made with a lot of love and thoughts of how we can replicate it at home.
We cooked Lasi Nemak (which we wrapped into a banana leaf) with fried chicken, had fun doing the "pulled tea" and the ondeh-ondeh dessert as well as a bean salad. We had Nasi Lemak with fried chicken afterwards in a restaurant and instantly recognized that they had used less coconut milk and less spices, the chicken was just a normal fried chicken and missed the different spices. Sara's recipe definitely was much tastier!!!
We can only recommend this cooking class!!!

I learned how to cook Hainanese Chicken Rice woohoo! with the beautiful Chef Sara. She is kind and friendly and also shared some knowledge on different varieties of special herbs in her garden. I am definitely saving some cash from now onwards coz cooking is less expensive than eating at restaurants. And of course home cooked food simply tastes better and you're in control of the ingredients. I love the calamansi juice too. Can’t wait to cook what I’ve learned at home to share with my family & friends. Thank you Sara & see you soon.

We were there to celebrate my mother-in-law's birthday and had an absolutely fabulous time cooking with Sara! As a Singaporean, this is a familiar cuisine, but the cooking tips, interaction, and connections that we built with Sara (and her mom) were priceless. The experience of cooking in a home, as a family, was unforgettable. The entire family had a blast! My two boys (10 and 7) said "This is the best Satay we've ever had!" - these two foodies have had tons of Satay so they totally know what the are talking about!

I took this cooking class with a friend. Even though I had rarely cooked before, I was able to complete a wonderful dish with her kindness. It was an amazing experience to look around the garden in her house, listen to the instructions, and harvest some of the ingredients. While cooking, she also gave me explanations about the ingredients, which helped me understand. Sharing the dishes together allowed me to get to know about the different Malay cultures, and also got good information about tourism and restaurants. Unless you feel heavily burdened by the price of the cooking class, surely this will be one of the best experiences.
(btw, my friend enjoyed her advice about durian ice cream :) )

I can not find the contact information so I am going to write it here. Why do you have to wait to decline one week after I booked ? You know time is very vulnerable when traveling in limited times. I was kind of excited to participate in this tour. Very sad. That's life maybe.

Hello. I am on maternity leave and did not have time to check my email as I am caring for my new baby full time. That is the reason for the delay in responding to you.
But I'm sure you had a great time in Kuala Lumpur anyway as there are plenty of other food related activities you could do.
*Additional notes to other traveler (5/9/2023)* A traveler read about this review and contacted me about ‘cancelling a class’. To make it clear, I did not cancel a class. Fearless19255301713 had requested for a class and I declined (a week later). I do not have instant booking set on Tripadvisor. Once you request for a class, I can decline it or accept it. I have never canceled a class I accepted in my history of teaching.
Hope this clear the air!
