Overview
Enjoy a traditional tea ceremony and learn the sophisticated philosophy behind serving a bowl of tea. You’ll have two options for this experience: a 1-hour tea ceremony in a machiya (traditional wooden building) or a 1.5-hour tea ceremony and kimono-wearing lesson. You’ll have a local guide with you to translate any questions you may have as you experience this fascinating aspect of Japanese culture.
Highlights
  • Enjoy a personalized Japanese tea ceremony in a private Kyoto home
  • Great choice for travelers who want to learn about Japan’s traditions
  • No language obstacles as your guide speaks English
  • Tea tastings and snacks included
What to Expect
Your day begins by meeting your English-speaking guide. The tea ceremony is one of the most ancient and highly respected practices in Japan. You’ll head to a traditional Kyoto home (machiya), ensuring an authentic experience. As the ceremony begins, you’ll learn all the important facets of tea preparation, including proper posture and the correct use of matcha powder. Along the way, your guide will be there to translate any questions you have for the tea master. Finally, enjoy the tea accompanied by a sweet snack to go with it, and if you’ve booked the kimono option, learn how to properly wear the traditional garment. The day ends with a return to your original departure point.
