Tunisian Sahara Two-day Tour from Hammamet

Tunisian Sahara Two-day Tour from Hammamet

Imagine a place where the sands of the desert have been touched by the magic of Hollywood stardust. You've found it with this two-day tour, which'll show you some of Tunisia's most famous film locations. You'll visit a Roman amphitheater, explore underground cave houses, cross a vast salt lake, and discover a secluded oasis at the fringes of the Sahara. Embark on your sandy adventure at El Jem Colosseum. You'll then head to Matmata, where you'll have lunch and visit the rock-cut cave homes that starred in two Star Wars films. Finish the day in the oasis town of Douz for an overnight stay. This is a great spot to take an optional camel or carriage ride in the desert. After breakfast, you'll cross Chott el Djerid, a mirage-filled salt lake, before jumping into a 4x4 for a ride to Onk Jemal, where you'll discover the film set city built for Star Wars. After lunch in Gafsa, you'll round off the tour with a photo stop in Kairouan, a great place to take lots of Instagram-worthy pictures.

          Best experience in Tunisia
One of the best experiences I'd ever been on. Learnt loads, the hotel stay in the Sahara was beautiful. All ran very smoothly and Mohammad was the best guide/host. Would 100% recommend, worth every penny.

          Great sights
We booked through GetYourGuide for a good price - but you pay for that by spending hours picking up / dropping off at other hotels! We left Sousse just after 7am and got to Kairouan after 9am - would be better to get a taxi to Kairouan and meet the group there. On the way back we went via Skanes - which added an extra half hour. Kairouan itself was very interesting - both the mausoleum and the mosque were beautiful. The lunch was ok - bring some snacks / drinks to keep you going. El Jem was amazing - the Colosseum / Amphitheatre is properly jaw dropping. Our group of about 16 fitted comfortably into the bus with plenty of spare seats. The guide was pretty good, although a bit pushy for tips! Would recommend depending on how early a pickup time they give you!

          Packed of cultural education
Pick up time is sharp ontime. The guide, Mohammed, is very knowledgeable and gives interesting talks about history and local culture. He speaks at least 4 languages and engages with clients polite and respectful. The tour includes visits to the Kairouan reservoir, mausoleum of Sidi Sahabi, the grand mosque, the Eljem amphiteatre and the archeological museum that houses fantastique mosaics and afrique house in roman times. Lunch was at Dar Ammar, except drink but they accept cards. For one day cultural trip packed with lots of information and insights from the guide, it is a real good value

          Sahara 2 day trip
We booked this trip through musement.com. Our trip didn't start great as the coach didn't arrive to pick us up. We waited for 2 hours for a coach that didn't come. We got in touch with the company at 8am when they opened, still hoping they were just running late. They told us it had been cancelled and re arranged for another day, which thankfully we were still in Tunisia and not gone home. They told us that they sent us email to say it was cancelled but we didn't receive one. I'm not sure whether I'd recommend this trip to be honest. There were some great parts like quad biking and camel rides in the sahara (costs extra). The Jeep safari was fun. But you can do these things in other places so I'm not sure (for me) whether it was worth all the traveling. Take money for snack breaks and drinks. You will also need to pay in cash for the quads and camel rides if you chose to do so. If you're an animal lover take some snacks as there are so many hungry dogs and cats around on the stops. The caves where a family live was an odd stop. They will pressure you for money when you leave which we didnt like. The salt lake sunrise was beautiful but it is just a stop on the road for 5 minutes then you are rushed back onto the coach. The hotel we stayed in was ok however we ended up not feeling well after the food the next day which wasn't great then being on a coach for hours. Overall I am glad we went on the trip as we explored and went to the sahara desert but..... There is Alot of traveling with short stops at the destinations . You are mainly on the coach for the 2 day duration. You will get around an hour or half hour on the stops at the collasium, and the star wars places so don't expect to be at these places for long. The Mosque stop is a view from a shop which you will then be guided through the shop and shown rugs to buy and other things to buy.

          Sahara tour
Lots of sitting in a mini bus driving but overall worth it, our guide Mohammed was lovely answering lots of questions. The hotel we stayed in overnight was clean and tidy it would have been useful to have labels on the food as we had no idea what some of it was take money for drinks Inc water. The Colosseum was really interesting and being able to walk around on our own was good. Quad biking and the 4x4 ride were great fun(word of advice for quad biking wear long trs but not too loose, girl in our group burnt holes in her trs and I burnt my leg) The sunrise was beautiful if not a bit disappointing I thought we were going to drive somewhere and sit and watch it come up but we just stopped suddenly on the side of the road got out took a picture and got back in the van. The Star Wars set was brilliant let down only by all the stalls in front of the buildings. The last part of the trip was not as enjoyable we climbed to the top of a shop roof to take a picture of the mosque next door then back down to sit and watch them pull out carpets to try and sell, we got 15mins to look in the shop(when we were told time for shopping I thought we might get an hour to walk around on our own) then it was time to go again. With a bit of a tweak this excursion could be really good, we enjoyed it however some bits more than others.

An amazing tour, we had a great time and got to see some amazing things and places in the 2 days. The tour guide was so great and gave great information. The stops for lunch etc were great and the food was lovely. Done quad bikes and camel rides at extra costs ( amazing prices and excellent experience). So glad we did this trip. We definitely go again. Thank you so much 💯👏👏

          Fantastic, Albeit Expensive, Trip!
DO NOT LOSE: Paper - 4364971aa19cb9bf6a8924bcf504e2be Video - 836e60208d796524bba2985e3514e86f ffmpeg -i in.mov -pix_fmt rgb8 -r 10 output.gif && gifsicle -O3 output.gif -o output.gif This was an unforgettable experience! The guide (Nidhal) and driver (Jamel) were phenomenal, and the sites and itinerary greatly exceeded expectations. If you don't have a lot of time and really want to get a taste of what Tunisia has to offer, this would be a very effective, albeit ultra-luxurious way to do so. More specific comments are below: Pros: 1. The guide can customize the experience for your party 2. Accommodations were clean 3. Food was excellent 4. This itinerary is very difficult to replicate with public transport, and largely impossible within this time period. Some places (Chebika, Mos Espa decorum, Matmata) do not have public transport options and are not even reachable by private bus. Possible with car hire, but you need to know what you are doing and have contingency plans if breakdowns occur in remote parts (very difficult if cell reception is poor or you are not fluent in Arabic or at least French) 5. The guide can help bargain with local merchants if you don't speak Arabic or French fluently Cons (e.g. why I cannot give this tour 5 stars): 1. Price Detailed Explanation of Price: The price of this tour is excessive. I learned from other travelers and locals that guides and drivers are not employed by the company and are instead hired on an hourly basis with supposedly low wages. I understand that tourism is an important part of the economy and am happy to contribute, but the core people providing the services need to be fairly compensated. Food is almost exclusively provided by hotels and is all-you-can-eat buffet style. I didn't want this for every meal and would have preferred just pulling over to good quality local restaurants instead. Food would have been just as good, a lot cheaper, and would have supported more local merchants. Meals are all pre-paid in advance and are under time reservations - this seems too constricting for a private tour, where I assumed a large amount of flexibility would have been permissible. I would have preferred it if the tour company offered an option which unbundled food and accommodation - the cost for hotel buffets was excessive and constricting. The price presumably also includes the cost of housing and feeding the driver and guide as well as the car rental and petrol, which is fully understandable and necessary; however, I really would have appreciated more options to manage costs. Finally, the prices of the hotels and meals did not add up (e.g. seemed far over-priced) especially for an off-season trip. Even the most luxurious hotel on this trip (Golden Tulip Taj Sultan) charged around ~200 TND per night if booked directly. The other hotels were significantly cheaper (101 - 150 TND) if booked directly excluding food, and these are all considered luxury, tourist-centric hotels. The tour company is also likely paying less due to pre-existing agreements. I suspect that the tour operator (which to be clear has done an amazing job of arranging this tour!) and Viator / TripAdivsor (which do literally nothing beyond serving as the advertising platform) are pocketing a large amount of the price as profit. I am uncomfortable with this, especially if the driver and guide are not paid well. So in summary, if price is not an issue for you and you don't mind being in tourist-centric accommodations, this will be a trip to remember. This itinerary will give you a chance to experience the incredible history and (to an extent) culture that Tunisia has to offer, all in a small amount of time. I would recommend this tour to any individual or group in this demographic, and again I cannot thank my driver and guide enough - they really were amazing!

How to be amazed in Tunisia in 2 days. The sites visited are magnificent, the camel ride is excellent and the 4×4 Safari is sensational.
Despite everything, plan on well-deserved tips...

An unforgettable excursion with a dream setting.
On the program: carriage, camel, quad and 4x4 rides (a must do)
Our guide Bassem, a person with whom we never get bored, he is at the top 👍 knows Tunisia like the back of his hand. Many thanks to him for his professionalism. For travel time and survey (it's 1 hour before departure and departure 1 hour after survey 😂😂😂) but I'll leave it to you to see that with him😅
Thank you Bassem and Ali see you soon inshallah 😜

The advert stated that it was possible to do quad biking in the desert, which I had prepared for. However, when we arrived there the guide told us that it was not possible to do so.

It's a shame. I was counting on this because on a camel we were only at the edge of the desert and the photos were not the same as if we were on a quad.

Apart from that, the experience is worth it.
