Stop At: Baniyas Square, 14 A St - Dubai - United Arab Emirates

There is no better way to start your street photography tour of old Dubai than at one of the busiest stations on the Metro's Green Line — Baniyas Square. Additionally, it is located in the most central section of Deira, making it an ultra-accessible stop. Take a seat in the walk-through park and observe as masses of people of differing cultures and nationalities busily get on with their day. This is definitely a great place to catch some portraits. It is the perfect vantage point for capturing the trademark Deira Twin Tower Buildings and other buildings in the direct surroundings known for their unique architecture.

Stop At: Naif Souk, 9a St & Deira St Btwn Naif South St, Dubai United Arab Emirates

Naif Souq—meaning marketplace in the Arab world—is a place with more than 265 stores selling various goods from jewellery to clothing and even local food. Most importantly, if you are looking for souvenirs which you wouldn’t find at the airport, this place offers you a wide variety of items. Al Naif is also the homeland of most popular Mosque in Deira—Naif Mosque—first built in 1948. Not surprisingly, within the immediate vicinity of this Mosque, you can find a variety of shops and restaurants which are seriously worth stepping in to. The foot traffic and the cultural diversity in this area makes it the perfect portrait stop. Helpful hint: if you are interested in taking portraits of people, it is better to approach them and introduce yourself. Based on our experience, they will be more than happy to pose. Avoid sneaking a picture. This applies especially to women, as they often do not like to be photographed by strangers.

Stop At: Women's Museum Bait al Banat, Al Sabkha 24 St Gold Souq, Deira, Dubai United Arab Emirates

This museum is definitely worth a visit. The UAE is often portrayed as a patriarchal society; however, the Women’s museum is proof that this isn’t the case. This Museum praises the accomplishments of influential women who helped to shape the UAE and the region in every regard, such as in business, art, education, politics, fashion and their role as the backbone of the society itself. This museum is also the only one of its kind in the Middle East.

Stop At: Dubai Gold Souk, Dubai - United Arab Emirates

Dubai’s advantageous location has facilitated the development of its massive gold industry. With Africa and India within close proximity—the world’s greatest source of and largest market for gold respectively—and its trading relationship with China—the largest source of and second largest market for gold in the world, it’s no surprise that Dubai maintains a competitive edge on this front. Annually, about 40% of the world’s gold passes through Dubai, and much of it lands in Dubai’s Gold Souq, which houses over 370 gold retail stores. The Gold Souq is a top destination for many as Dubai’s gold prices are globally competitive. Moreover, due to regulations imposed by the authorities, consumers can rest assured that the gold they purchase is of the highest quality and purity. You have to witness the phenomenon that is the Gold Souq for yourself. You can find the most exquisite gold jewellery from something simple to something extravagant like beautifully designed gold chains which embellish the entire chest area like a shield. Diamonds, platinum, silver and birthstones can also be found in every corner.

Opened in 2006, this free of charge museum teaches you about the stages of development of Dubai’s Civic body since the UAE became an independent nation in 1957. You can also learn about the building which houses the museum—significant as this was the Municipality’s main office in the 1950’s. The balcony inside overlooks the Creek and is the perfect spot for an overhead shot of the area. We definitely recommend visiting.
