About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- W1145MEdanielap0 contributionsView of a lifetime/preview of heavenHenry is amazing! This man is a trip lol he is very interesting to listen to and is a wealth of knowledge about his beautiful country. I couldn’t find a more proud Guatemayan person! The hike is relatively easy but challenging at times. be ready to laugh and learn as he walks you through the history. His English is pretty great! A little more detail about the Hike, because I didn’t know what to expect and I couldn’t find it in the reviews. if you don’t live in San Pedro, you can coordinate a pick up with Henry with a private boat, relatively cheap, considering they’re picking you up at 3:30 a.m.. you will get to San Pedro around 4 AM and then you will get in a shuttle that will drive for about 30 minutes up the mountain. It will drop you off on a little village and you will start your hike. There are three stops in the Hike where he will use them as a rest stop as well as teaching moments. You will reach the peak of the hike around 5:40 AM. (If the hike was nonstop it would take like 45 minutes to an hour) the peak is absolutely breathtaking and he takes some pretty good pictures! The back down is a lot easier. Please note that Hike up will be in the dark and requires you to be careful where you step and have some free hands as there are times you have to pull yourself up with the rope (you don’t need major upper body strength) it would be great to bring a little flashlight to put on your forehead.Written March 13, 2024

- nurseflaka0 contributionsFamily kayaking tourThe guides were awesome. Came to our hotel and helped us navigate the water taxi type transportation to cross the lake. We did ask for a later start time which they agreed to but once on the lake it was very choppy and I was told that was because of the later start time. It would be nice if they had told me that because had I known that I would have stuck with the earlier start time. The lake was beautiful, the beach we landed on was very nice too. There are vendors there so bring $$ if you want to shop or buy snacks. The guides stayed with us while kayaking and helped us maneuver the waves. They did not have the right amount of kayaks though and tried to put my husband and I in a double which was a disaster! Ultimately they were able to get us singles from another location. The trip had to be shorter which was fine by us, the choppy lake made for an intense workout after about 2 hours! All in all the day was very good. We would definitely recommend this company. just keep in mind things are very laid back and timing is all relative. Ask questions, be prepared because unlike the states safety is not the number one concern. I say this not to deter anyone but because all of my concerns would have been sorted out before we came if we were in the states but things are very relaxed in this little water front town so be prepared for it, go with the flow and enjoy the beauty of the lake and nature!Written April 17, 2023
- AnnaRanaHG0 contributionsCool activity to doThe tour we had is horseback riding from town to coffee fields, riding around there, riding back, having a coffee processing experience. We really enjoyed the ride, it was fun to experience riding a horse in the town and in the fields particularly. Our guide was very nice. I suggest wearing pants as you may graze by some plants in the fields. Cool experience.Written February 8, 2023
- Bensloan130 contributionsIndian nose hikeSalvador was a great tour guide and person! He was very knowledgeable and helped us through the entire hike. He picked us up at 4 am from the town where we were staying. (This is very nice because if you aren’t staying in Santa Clara the you either have to have a private boat take you there or have a driver). We then drove to Santa Clara and hiked up to the top (45 min in total). He provided walking sticks and coffee at the top! Salvador was extremely friendly and an experienced hiker. - 480yaelw0 contributionsExceptional experience , full of charm from the market shopping to the cooking of Pipian together with ElizabethEverything was great. Elizabeth took us to the local vegtable and fruit market, we shopped together and afyerwards cooked a typical Guatemalan dish in her open kitchen overlooking the beautiful lake Atitlan. Elizabeth explained about the village, the food and shared her personal unique story . All together is was an exceptional experience.Written December 2, 2022
- franciscorF25NJ0 contributionsEasy, relaxing, and get to know all about coffeeHop on a horse in San Pedro and ride to San Juan. Very easy and the horses are very well trained, once in San Juan you go halfway up a mountain to an impressive forest where coffee is growing, get a lecture and ride back down to the center of San Juan to drink coffee and go shopping. Very nice, very easy, adequate for all ages, it's just a bit over priced.Written November 8, 2022
- trano_outthere0 contributionsGuide with geology knowledge and birdwatching expertiseSalvador was a magnificent guide who was recommended to us because of his expertise in birdwatching. However, not only that! At the top of the Indian Nose (we arrived when it was still dark enough to see the eruptions of Volcán de Fuego in the distance) he used the 20' until sunrise explaining us the geological history of the area, the different volcanoes around us (active, inactive, collapsed ...), and even about the different indigenous tribes that had settled around the lake and how they had adapted to the new times... On our way down his birdwatching skills shown, and he was pointing out and identifying a large variety of birds (even though he says it's not the best spot). We had booked sort of two tours in one (Indian Nose and birdwatching), so he then brought us near San Pedro to a better area for birdwatching . It was amazing!Written November 3, 2022

Most rewarding and most difficult hike we have done. This company was fantastic. We camped higher than any other group so it was less time to reach the top in the morning. Benjamin and Orlando and Fanny (dog) were amazing guides. They encouraged us along the way and stayed with those having difficulty, making this hike possible for all in our group. Fed us hot food, cocoa, hot cereal in the morning. Sleeping bags were very thin (and well used) so bring lots of layers to sleep in. We brought our blow-up sleeping pads and a blow-up pillow (recommend) as the foam sleeping mats are hard and lumpy. Our tent was well worn and the zipper didn't work well but all this paled in comparison to sleeping to sounds of El Fuego erupting throughout the night. Well worth the strain to do this hike. Don't miss it!!!

We chose between this one with maximum of 12 people per group with 2 person tents and another one with 20 people per group and big cabins for more people for the same price. We are super happy with our choice, with warm clothes you can borrow (we recommend having your own pair of long johns under your pants though) it's warm enough in the tents at night. Our guides Henry and Benjamin were lovely, Benjamin doesn't speak much english but hes learning and he tried to learn us guatemalan spanish (?) with lots of enthusiasm. Only negative point were communication with whoever answers their emails or whatsapp when asking about ingredients in their food to see if I were able to eat it (not asking about allergy friendly food, I would gladly brought my own), constantly referring to the e-mail with information we got after the booking with no actual answer to our simple questions. Maybe lost in translation.

Incredible tour! Benjamin and Cesar were great guides and made sure we were well taken care of. It’s a challenging hike, but they will go as slow as you need and provide plenty of breaks. The food prepared was great! Their base camp is the highest on the mountain, giving incredible Fuego views. We were rained on that night, but Benjamin and Cesar went out of their way to take care of us. They brought us warm food and hot chocolate to our cabins while they were getting soaked in the rain.
The groups were smaller (8) people versus larger companies, which had anywhere from 15-30 people. This is a hard hike, so having that many people and skill levels really slows down the climb. With a small group and two guides, the 6 of us that were equal level could power through to the top and not be slowed waiting for the rest of the group, which gets frustrating when you just want to get to the top and relax. The two in our group that were slow were led by the second guide, who was very patient.
They also provide whatever gear you forget that day at the base. I forgot my rain jacket somehow and they had a rack of spare jackets, gloves, beanies, and plastic ponchos to borrow. I recommend bringing an extra pair of socks if I were to do it again.

We were lucky to be able to book this tour on late notice, as most of the tour companies were already fully booked. And we are happy we did so, because we got exactly what we wanted! Everthing was well organized and the tour guides were friendly and helpfull. One big plus was that the group size was relatively small, only 7 people. We saw some other groups with 20+ people! The sleeping mats are quite thin so getting a good night sleep is difficult, but I guess thats part of the experience. Would definitely recommend this tour company.

You need to do this when you visit Guatemala! I highly recommend this company for multiple reasons. First our guide Miguel was brilliant. The group size is much smaller than other companies which have up to 40 people, ours was only 4. This made the hike up easy to do at our own pace without having to wait for people. The food was good and the campsite had excellent views of Fuego which was erupting about every 20 minutes or so. The hike itself is around 5 hours and 1500m elevation so it is challenging but doable with reasonable level of fitness. You can rent hiking bags, poles, gloves, beanies, headlamps and buy some snacks with the company and I recommend having all of these items. We did the hike to Fuego, it is very hard but not impossible. Very steep and dusty, wouldn’t really recommend unless the weather is perfect and you are very fit. Also it costs extra. The Fuego hike is another 4 hours minimum return. The couple that didn’t do the Fuego hike with us also got really good views and probably saw more eruptions than we did because the view is obstructed during the hike. You need to carry your own meals which are provided. There are shops to purchase drinks and snacks along the way, it’s not too pricey either. Also the cabins are good, there is a mattress, sleeping bag and blanket provided. Bring a small travel pillow. 10/10 experience recommend it to anyone.

Great guides for an amazing adventure. No matter how physically fit you are, the guides ensured no one was left behind and everyone did it at their own pace. Henry, Edwin and Anderson all three were there next to you during the entire trek and prepared amazing warm meals on the top with great views. Would recommend this to anyone visiting Antigua and to do it with Henry, Edwin and Anderson as guides.

The hike is not for the weak. The guides were great and food was good too. The day we went was very cloudy so we only got to see the volcano briefly and it rained on us all night. Not as cold as it gets during dry season. We still had a blast and really enjoyed it. My advice is be prepared for rain if you go during rainy season and to not overpack because you will have opportunity to buy water and snacks during the climb. If it’s your first hike make sure you train before. You will not enjoy it if you are not at least at basic physical condition. Also would recommend trail runners instead of boots for this hike, take cash (local currency) . Hire a porter for sure if your not fit. My mistake was buying things that I could have easily rented like headlamp, hiking backpack, etc.

One thing that we noticed right away with this company vs others on the mountain is the small group size which made for a very personal and fun trek. We got to know everyone in our group and the guides (Willi and Adan) we’re so friendly and accomodating for everyone’s pace/fitness level. We always felt well informed and even when weather conditions changed their advice and knowledge was focused on enjoyment and safety. Logistically the trip ran smoothly and was very well organised but we recommend stocking up on snacks because it’s a very challenging hike and you will be hungry!
Overall, highly recommend and couldn’t ask for better guides than Willi and Adan. MUY BIEN

Have hiked a lot at this altitude internationally and sent feedback privately to operator in relation to some small but important areas in need of improvement following a disappointing trip from an organisational and logistics perspective. The feedback was well received.
To those booking, to make sure of a good and safe trip, suggest bringing plenty (4/5) warm layers of clothes for night time (it gets very very cold!), waterproofs/poncho, good quality hiking boots, snacks, and to use two walking poles, beanie hats, gloves and head lamp offered for rent at the start.

First of all the tour guides Cesar, Benjamin and Havier were hands down some of the most polite, respectful, caring and supporting tour guides I have ever had the pleasure of hiking with. They were always looking out for the group. We had amazing conversations in English and in Spanish so that each of us could progress our knowledge in the others language. The provided great food which provided the nutrients you needed to handle the grueling hike.

When does this hike depart Antigua and when could you expect to arrive back the next day?
Written February 23, 2024
We met at 7:30 and departed about 7:45, then it is about an hour ride to the starting point where you collect any gear you need and your meals. The next day we were back in Antigua between 12:00 and 1:00.

Is there any possible way that a single person, a solo traveler can simply buy one ticket for one person. This trip seems incredible and I am now completely obsessed with making a go of it.
I am currently traveling solo so.....
thank you!

If you visit the website for the hikes they will be able to tell you if it's possible. That would be plenty of time considering when I booked, it was a week ahead of the hike

I'm sorry for the late reply. How did you get on? For future travellers, if you book direct through Hostel Tropicana website it is better and they can book you in. The only dependant here is if it's only one person and they have no other bookings then the tour won't go which I think may have happened for you. Hope you get up and seen it still
