This tour exceeded all my expectations and then some!

Tereza was an amazing tour guide. Not only was she extremely knowledgeable about everything Monkey Island, Panama Canal, and The Gatun tribe, but she also went above and beyond and told us many amazing places we needed to check out in and around Panama City. (If you are extra nice and cool, you might end up at the local fish market where we were treated to some out of this world Ceviche.)

But back to the tour. We were picked up promptly at 8 AM by Tereza (the coolest) who drove us out of Panama City, through Soberiana Park and down to Gatun Lake where we were introduced to a family of white faced capuchin monkeys. I say introduced because not only did we get to see them play, fight, and eat in their habitat, but Tereza (having a specifically special bond with one of the capuchins, George) was able to get the monkeys onto the boat as they reached out to us and made us feel welcome and giddy. Tereza answered all our questions with true admiration for creating an experience that was nothing but good vibes from the beginning of the day. We visited the Wounaan tribe, Which seemed like a less visited area compared to the Embarra tribe. I don't say this to be disparaging, it's just the truth. It was interesting to learn about the weaving technique of the Wounaaan women, and buying somethething for $20 dollars when you could buy it in the city for $100 felt like a pretty amazing deal. My friend bought a bowl with a weaving of a Turtle which I was very jealous of.

After we learned about the weaving women of Wounaan, Tereza took us on a small rainforest hike where we learend about the water trees and Tereza's favorite animal, Ants. I'm not joking, tereza loves ants, it's adorable and cool.

We then got back on the boat and headed back to the city where Tereza took those who wanted to go to the Fish Market where we had a great talk over beers and ceviche.

All in all, I would recommend 10/10! If you're worried about the price, this isn't for you. This is for people who want to explore a beautiful part of panama city with a knowledgeable and kind guide and have a great time with great people.

Pluses: As a "Zoniac" (i.e., hailing from the former Panama Canal Zone), Tereza is very knowledgeable about Panama City, the Canal, and the indigenous village. She proved to be a very accommodating and an excellent tour guide. During the boat portion of our tour, she and the coxswain attempted mightily to coax down the monkeys from the trees to our tour boat, but with limited success (not their fault the monkeys weren't being cooperative). The tour boat is well covered over the passenger seating area, so if it rains, you won't get soaked (although maybe slightly wet). The indigenous peoples' basket weaving skills are truly extraordinary. Baskets, including other hand made items there, are for sale at a very reasonable price. Tereza was able to pick us up for the tour at the cruise ship passenger drop off location at the Fuerte Amador Resort and Marina building (more on that later).

Minuses: Until we disembarked the ship, we didn't know exactly where the shuttle bus drop off location was exactly. We had previously arranged with Tereza to pick us up a location "X", which proved to be not the actual drop off point. We texted back and forth a bit attempting to revise the pick up location, finally resorting to actual voice calls. As it turns out, she was waiting for us only about 150 feet away, but we could not see each other, and she was not familiar with the layout at the Fuerte Amador facility, and apparently couldn't Google map it. When we finally made physical contact, we apologized for the delay, particularly to her other guest on the tour, who took it all in stride. Tereza's recommended lunch/snack spot (a fish taco specialty restaurant) was only moderately OK in are opinion. The ceviche was excellent, but the tacos left much to be desired, particularly given what we're used to stateside at Mexican/Latin type restaurants.

Important Tips: (1) Bring some toilet paper and hand sanitizer/wash with you (since none is available at the restrooms at indigenous village). (2) If you are visiting Panama City on a cruise ship, then until the cruise ship terminal construction is complete, advise Tereza to pick you up at Fuerte Amador Resort and Marina building main entrance (she knows where this is now).

Bottom line: Highly recommended tour. Would do it again without hesitation, just at a different lunch/snack spot.

We did several tours (including Monkey Ilsnad/Indigenous Community) with Tereza over the course of our one week stay in Panama and each trip was better than the last. Tereza is a truly excellent, experienced tour guide- she's knowledgeable, friendly, prompt, and super responsive to questions before, during and after the tours. She went above and beyond to accommodate a family tour (with young kids) and made sure we all had memorable experiences. She's fun, flexible, understanding, and simply a pleasure to spend the day with. We've already recommended her to multiple friends planning their Panama vacations.

First, I want to say that Teresa is AWESOME!

We got picked up at hotel we stayed at in Casco Viejo. Teresa was very engaging since before we got picked up. She’s very knowledgeable and is very easy to talk to.

We first stopped to use restrooms and grab food. Then we hit the road to the village. Once we got to Gamboa, we hopped on a boat.

We spent about 2 hours at village, met the indigenous community, learned about their culture, shopped some of their homemade items and enjoyed a demonstration of a traditional dance.

After village, we hopped back on boat and went to monkey island. We spent about 1.5 hours here.

Everything was amazing and the trip couldn’t have went any better!

This experience was so amazing!!! Teressa was so knowledgeable, she gave us a history lesson on the canal as we headed towards monkey island. Once we went to monkey island we saw 3 different species of monkeys, a crocodile and an iguana. The monkeys were so well behaved and cute, they climbed onto the boat and ate from our hands. We then headed to the indigenous group were we walked through the rainforest and learned about the plants and trees. They also have amazing art, Woven baskets, carved pieces and jewelry, you are gonna wanna bring cash. We also got traditional drawings on our skin and watched them dance. Then we headed to the fish market to get a very tasty lunch. Book this trip you will not regret it!!!!

What a blast! Tereza was incredibly accommodating with transportation to begin the trip. We had just flown in at dawn, and she helped us keep our luggage with us until we could check in. We were able to get through the city efficiently, and along the drive she gave great historical information from her unique perspective growing up as a "Zonian." Tereza was knowledgeable about the city and the culture. We had a great boat captain who was patient to wait for monkeys to come, even when other boats would leave. Tereza was mindful of sustainability in terms of getting monkeys to come to the boat. We loved both the monkey experience and the village experience. There was a short jungle hike in the village (simple, not strenuous!) where we learned more about the Embera resources and way of life. This was a phenomenal experience for us! I would do it again. The 5-star ratings you see are legit!

Awesome trip with Teresa!!!! We had a large group of 17 people from young kids to adults. Teresa was engaging with adults and kids. She worked hard to get monkey to come on a boat and made a wonderful sea creature with kids while snorkeling, it was one of the most memorable trips we took. I cannot thank Tereza enough for an incredible experience to Monkey Island & Indigenous Village! She picked us up at our resort just outside of Gamboa and immediately we knew we were in excellent hands. She began sharing history and her story with us along with what we could expect from the day. Tereza and our Captain didn’t give up when the monkeys were slow to come to our boat. They kept calling and moving around the island and sure enough the whole monkey family came down to visit us and eat from our hands. It was an unforgettable experience. She then brought us to Indigenous Village, what a wonderful place to see these people and how they live. Tereza went above and beyond on our tour. She gave us many tips, went out of her way yo show us areas that were not even on the tour itinerary! She’s friendly, very passionate about her work, she speaks English, and she is a genuinely wonderful human being! Thank you for making our tour so special! 10/10 for Tereza and New Leaf Panama!! Highly recommend!!!

Oh my goodness, this was an amazing tour with an amazing tour guide. My husband and I did the Monkey Island Tour with our son and his fiancee. It was fabulous. Tereza, our tour guide, grew up in Panama, the daughter of American anthropologists. She is totally bilingual and knows A LOT about Panama. The close-up experience with the monkeys was a once in a lifetime experience, and totally safe. Experiencing the indigenous community, their way of life even as they live so close to a metropolitan city, and their beautiful handicrafts was also a treat. I was able to help the community by buying two small handmade masks that I now treasure. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

We had an amazing time with Tereza! We went to monkey Island and the Wouanan Indigenous community. She was so easy to work with when planning the trip, she was able to accommodate all our requests. She was a lot of fun and had so much information to share. Any requests we had she was willing to consider and did her best to accommodate, including changing the itinerary during the trip and dropping us off in a different location. Anyone looking to take a tour anywhere in Panama should use Tereza. Her Panamanian background, perfect English, easygoing nature, and fun personality make the best guide in the area!
