Fabulous trip over the border. Our guide Dan from Christina tours was excellent. We explored the monastery in the rocks, Arbanasi village, Veliko Tărnovo town and fortress and had a delicious meal in Shtastliveca restaurant.

Good tour, but buyer beware....
Feb 2020
The tour I had on 16/2/20 was good, but part of the advertised itinerary, we did not do. We did not go to Arbanasi, nor were told why. We did stop at an overlook and were told a small bit about it, but were just told that it was the best vantage point for a photo. I thought it was just a stop for photos; all part of the tour. We loaded up the van after Veliko Tarnovo and I thought we were headed to Arbanasi, but after a few minutes, we were told that we were heading back to Bucharest with no explanation.

We did lose a little time in the morning, as we had to return to a hostel for one of the guests passports, and a little more time at customs upon entry because another guest had an issue with his passport (he was in the military, stationed in Romania, not his fault), but I was still expecting to go to Arbanasi. The part of the tour was just omitted.

Also, tour guides are not allowed to go with you on a tour, per Bulgarian law. I had several questions and forgot most of them by the time I got back to the van and saw the guide again. Had I known that the guide would not be with me the whole time, I would not have booked this tour. It wound up costing me over 100 USD and I do not feel that I got my monies worth.

The driver was very good and I know the guide and the driver split tips. I even gave a tip to them, but it was more for the driving and for the sights than the information and lack of visiting one place. I have informed Expedia regarding this situation, as well.

I see this tour advertised with and without Arbanasi, but the one advertised "without Arbanasi" still mentions it.

This is a long day and a lot of walking and climbing. I am disabled, but still managed to to do the whole thing without inconveniencing any of my fellow guests. Just know this in advance, if you are handicapped. I was quite proud of myself!

Dear Customer, Thank you for dedicating some time for providing the review. We are sorry to find out that the tour did not meet your expectations entirely. Please, allow us to explain the situation. Concerning the Arbanasi village, please, note that it is a really small place dating back to medieval times. All the houses there are private and tourists are not allowed to enter inside. For this reason, our stop there is short just for checking houses from the outside and taking photos. It is true, that sometimes our guides are not allowed to enter the highlights in Bulgaria. It is not always the case, but occasionally, the local authorities forbid entry for the guides. In case that happens, our guides provide all the information before entering the highlight and are ready to answer any questions after your visit. We thank you for your comments and will definitely take them into account for improving the quality of services. Kind regards,

Great trip to Bulgaria.

Took a day trip with my 20 year old son. It’s a full day. Lots of walking with elevation, which was fine for us but isn’t for those with trouble getting around. I highly recommend!

Our tour took us to the Rock Monastery in Basarabov and the old medieval Capitol of Veliko Tarnovo. We got to tour the fortress, have an amazing lunch at Shtastliveca. There was plenty of time for shopping as well. My tour guide Rodica was fabulous with the information she gave and additional questions I asked. I highly recommend this company (Grayline, Mr. Tripp) and this tour.

Nice Bulgaria Day Trip
Oct 2019
I think we were lucky as no one else booked that day’s tour to Bulgaria. Being a private tour we had some flexibility to add and drop sites to better suit our taste. Our guide, Mary made sure our wishes (within reason) were met. Communication and booking was easy and straightforward, and we would use them again.

Loved it!!
Dec 2019
I had Rodica as my guide and Alex as my driver, and it was honestly one of the best day trips I've ever taken. There were only two of us on the tour, so it felt like a private tour. The whole tour was very informative, funny, engaging, and inspiring. It was probably the best introduction to Bulgaria one can get. I cannot thank these two enough!! 😊

Great Guide and Nice City
Nov 2019 • Solo
I visited on Nov the weather was acceptable foggy and cold a bit but no rain.
We were a small group and our Guide Daniel was amazing, flexible and made sure we are all fine.
He was very nice in helping us taking pictures, and was available for help when walking up the fortress road in the mountain.
He also picked a great restaurant when the planned restaurant couldn't receive us because of sudden water problem
We really enjoyed this trip not only because of visiting a new place but mainly in my opinion for having Daniel a great attentive, flexible and caring guide (I had some leg pain and he kept an eye if I am following the group or if I need some assistance...and being a small grouped helped a lot.

In this trip be prepare for some walk and stairs climbing, but its definitely worth it.

And be ready to shop for rose water and rose essence products (Bulgaria is know for that), and you will find shops of local painters creating both religious and non religious paintings and you will even meet the painters if you are lucky, I didn't shop paintings myself but if you are into that you will definitely want to have some cash or your credit card ready.
