From the moment you arrive to Cusco station you’re informed at all times of the progress of your train. Currently there is a bimodal service with bus between Cusco and Oyantaytambo and then train to Machu Picchu pueblo. The bus was comfortable and quick with a nice stop to view the Sacred Valley and the train journey on the Vistadome to Machu Picchu was incredible.
You get a lot of info on the recorded announcements and the views are spectacular. Special mention to Felipe who continually asked how we were, gave us information and on the return journey, remembered us and ensured we had a great journey. Definitely an asset.
An experience not to be missed!

The train ride between Machu Picchu and Cusco is a beautiful journey. You get to see the beautiful sites and the every day life of Peruvians living there. PeruRail has a automated recording that speaks in both Spanish & English explaining different points of interest along the journey.
On the way back to Cusco, the PeruRail staff does a dance in the aisle showing a local native dance. We had two of the best staff in our car, Victor & Shomara. They personally explained to us in English what we were seeing and what was happening. We can not thank them enough for taking such good care of us.
We would recommend PeruRail to anyone wanting to experience Machu Picchu. The train cars were clean, the windows were large and you could see everything, but mostly we would recommend it because of the staff like Victor & Shomara. It’s the workers that make or break a company, and PeruRail has some of the best!

The Vistadome train ride was really a step above. What an amazing ride! As first time visitors to Peru, we had no idea what to expect. My sister and I were just excited to visit Machu Picchu. But every moment of the ride from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes was filled with amazement.

From the moment the train pulled in to the station, we could see an Andean dancer waving to us from the train’s observatory and we knew it would be a special experience. Once we boarded the train, we were in awe of the views from above. Along the ride, you can see the snow capped mountains and wondrous views of the Peruvian landscape.

Francisco was the absolute best and made us feel at home. He talked with us about the history of the train and local culture. Not only did Francisco point out special landmarks along the way, the overhead announcements gave small snippets of history in both English and Spanish.

In the Observatory, the dancers, Priscilla and Cesar, were lively and added to our excitement before reaching Machu Picchu. The sounds of Ramiro’s beautiful violin playing provided an amazing soundscape for our ride through the mountains.

During this time of COVID-19, we were nervous at first but the team, especially Hernan, went above and beyond to make us feel safe and protected every step of the way.

Do not hesitate to book the Vistadome train ride, you will not be disappointed!

I‘ve never experienced such a waste of money! The service (senior Esteban) is aweful and the staff really unfriendly. You have to take a bus that brings you to a train station two hours away from Cusco to hop on a train for an hour more. There are other agencies that offer a train from Cusco directly without the need of an extra bus (also much cheaper)! Also they tried to seperate us (five friends) into two busses although there were enough space for all in the first bus! We told them that we booked the tour together but they didn‘t care and just said: „You can meet on Machu Picchu again!“!! We had to discuss more that five minutes to get what we want (at 4:40 am)!
They promised several things and couldn‘t fulfill the most of it, for example the drinks on the train were suddenly forbidden although they promote to offer drinks on the train! We also needed to wear two masks and a faceshield all the time although the lady in the travel agency never said a word about it!! All in all they lie to you about their services to sell the most expensive tour ticket on the planet!!! Be smarter than we were and book another tour to Machu Picchu if you want to enjoy all of it!!

Taking a ride to Aguas Calientes from Cusco was not what I personally expected. The vista dome train bodes nice massive overhead skylight as well as massive side windows for a pretty good view of your surroundings. The train ride was about 3hrs, or more depending on stops at other stations and/or delays. Online you can purchase tickets from Poroy to Aguas Calientes, however there is a station in Cusco called San Pedro, however it wasn’t a available online as an option to leave from. Had it not been for a modification to our tickets the day before, my brother and I wouldn’t have know that there was a train station in the Cusco area. We still ended up catching the train from Poroy and took a take which cost us 30 Peruvian Soles which is less than $10usd.

There were two types of seating/tables, one was just for two people and the other arrangement was made for four people. All the tables have a folding system to allow for either more table space or space in-front on the passengers chest area. It can feel a tad bit cramped at the four seated table area. Due to covid food was not allowed onboard so if you did not eat prior, you’d be especially hungry on a long 3+ hr ride. The vista dome also didn’t serve food due to the ongoing pandemic nor did they lower the price of the vista dome tickets due to this factor.

The train wasn’t as fast as expected, it’s of course better than walking but it kind of just wobbled from side to side in what felt like a 10-15mph ride. If the train was faster it would have been in my opinion a more enjoyable ride. Due to covid you’re required to wear plastic face shields which isn’t mentioned online; my brother and I found out once we arrived at the station. Double mask were also worn which didn’t make it any more comfortable. The frustrating part about the plastic face shield requirement was that it wasn’t properly enforced. The staff picked and chose who they wanted to speak to about wearing the mask, many passengers took them off or just wore them above their foreheads and didn’t wear it for the purpose of covering their faces. Even some of the staff did the same thing. Which ultimately defeats the purpose of having it in the first place.

Ultimately it was a decent experience. I’m sure due to the circumstances it felt a lot of restricted than it normally is. Hopefully in the future they make adjustments to improve some of the processes.

The website Lied about their being any sort of snacks or water on board charged us a premium for being in the Vistadome and told us that we were not allowed to drink water or eat anything. They were also not allowing us to leave the train to buy any water or food for the 5 hour train ride. They might as well have stuck us in cargo hold. Rip off for sure.

When choosing a rate was difficult, because the train is quite comfortable inside (Car C) and the bar and panoramic areas nice. There was a beautiful show with Andean music and dance. Regretfully due to the pandemic no drinks and food on the train are permitted. The staff is awesome, service minded, friendly and very attentive.
So why rating so low… the owners shall invest better in maintenance of the machines (locomotives). Regretfully when heading back to Cusco, perhaps after 30 min, the train broke down and had impacted significantly our arrival time at Cusco. A real pity because also we had to cancel our tour for next day, mainly because of having a proper rest (altitude is not a joke).
The staff communicated clearly the situation with transparency and reaction from the station staff arranging the replacement of the locomotive was reasonable fair have to say… but you can guess how much time does it take what mentioned before. Plus there’s no food on board it make it a bit sour the waiting time.
Once again the staff, the show, the comfort of the seats were 5, but this sad inconvenient drop the rate significantly. Owner shall take actions kind this. Apparently isn’t an isolate event…

We had the chance to upgrade to the “vista dome train” departing at 7pm and arriving in Aguas Calientes at 8:30 pm.

The train itself was okay but overpriced for what they offer.
The music was so loud and at that time we were tired from the tour. Even though we told the staff if they could switch off the music, they did lower it a bit but was on for the whole 1:30h train trip to Aguas Calientes. It was super cold and that cabin was the “fancy” one.
Really disappointed with the whole Perurail experience considering the high price you pay for the ticket.
Just a heads up, the upgrade it’s not worthy. The normal train has the same seats and big windows, just the show (during the day) is what difference the two cabins.

The train didnt offer any food, due to ‘corona’ but the train was full and other trains offered food. Also no official delay information (1+ hr delay) or basic necessities like USB ports. The views were spectacular though!

This train ride was a spectacular introduction to the area around Ollantaytambo on the way to Machu Picchu. The boarding process was comfortable and orderly with good signage. Our cabin staff members, Tony and Gabriella Freiter, made sure that we were comfortable—even moving us to better seats when it became apparent that the cabin wouldn’t be full. Announcements about countryside features we passed were made in English and Spanish to point out areas of interest. When the train was close to our destination, they made sure that we were being met by our local guide. The return trip was just as comfortable, and featured descriptions of different features than those of the inbound leg.
I would highly recommend this level of service.
